pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: How to switch from front-end to back-end
I would say Node, Ruby, Python should be the easier for you to get started.

Node: you already now JS, the ecosystem, and the idiomatic ways to do stuff. You can focus on the differences between FE/BE

Ruby: It's easy to learn, also dynamic typed, and Rails it's a very good technology to start with backend/MVC

Python: Also easy to learn, also dynamic typed. I never played with Django..

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: What are your favorite algorithms?
Randomized algorithms, specifically Monte Carlo (probably because it was the first I explored), have fascinated me since I met them. The idea of having a very simple/efficient method to look for a solution, instead of a very complicated one, and still be able to have a near optimal solution is amazing.

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Why are you not using semver?
git uses semver i think
pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: ‪When did email spam become an acceptable “growth hack”?
marking as spam on GMail really works? I do get a lot of similar emails, and I'm always marking as spam and it still get to my inbox. Not really sure how does GMails learns about spam, which fields it considers (just sender? subject? specific words?)?

same here. are you still having the same problem?
pedrorijo91··on GitHub Report Card
same here. anyone else?
pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Should I blog on Medium for my open-source project, or self-host?
I would prefer to keep a blog, probably using github project pages. It is more customisable (it's true medium offers a clean UI without any effort), and GitHub has given more proofs to stay alive for a long time. On GitHub pages, you own the content, and it's fairly easy to adapt to new platforms if you wish to change. If you wish to change from medium, is it easy?

I kinda have the same thinking. Saying that "we have no Black/African-American (...)" seems way more racist that don't saying anything at all. People should get hired according their skills, not race/gender/etc. If a company is focused in hiring non-white males, aren't white males in disadvantage on recruitment processes?
pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: What would happen if Apple removed Uber from its App Store?
didn't see that point. it's true, but I think consumers would take more than 1 app (even if it as big as Uber) to change. If the behaviour stars repeating of course people would.

But Apple would be required by users to give an explanation for those actions.

Still, all this post is kinda nonsense because it would never happen. It's more a karma bait lol

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: What would happen if Apple removed Uber from its App Store?
1. I believe that Uber would raise against such decision. I also believe that all the problems it could bring would make Apple back in that decision. They are not competitors, so they win anything for complicating life to Uber.

2. No one would switch to Android just because of that.

3. Yes, lots of negative publicity. That's why 1. would never be reached.

Finally, one thing not mentioned: people would find a way to install the app without the app store. Every good hacker in the world would try to do it firstly, because every iphone user would be asking to be able to install Uber. And Apple doesn't want all bright minds trying to find flaws in their system for sure (I wouldn't at least)

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Why are we still using passwords?
well, we have 10 fingers...
pedrorijo91··on GitHub under DDoS attack
yes, bitbucket has been facing several problems in the last days. But it seems to be technical problems, and not DDoS http://status.bitbucket.org/

eager for those improvements ! you should totally have a newsletter to keep up with changes
pedrorijo91··on Show HN: TinyPress – A GitHub Blogging Platform
yep, a demo would be great.

I've logged, and I already have a blog on github, and everything seems not very intuitive. But the idea sure is great

pedrorijo91··on Show HN: TinyPress – A GitHub Blogging Platform
It's true. At some point github will turn all this blog traffic into profit. But just like they did with gist.github.com they can make a ghpages.github.com or something and create plans. At this point I think is just another feature that keep them a big step ahead of bitbucket, gitlab, and others.
pedrorijo91··on “Mostly functional” programming does not work
Your comment is somehow similar to my opinion.

The author simply states that when mixing imperative features like exceptions in a FP languages, sooner or later something is going to be broken, that wouldn't be in a pure FP language. The example given with the exceptions in a lazy value/variable is great for showing us that ! Who wouldn't forget that a Try/Catch block in a lazy val/var would be useless (because it would only throw the exception when evaluating the val/var) ?

And I agree, pure FP has a lot of benefits, the problem is that is too hard to create a real system in a pure FP approach. So we often make compromises to get things done. I use Scala everyday (and used to develop in Java) and I'm aware of that. Nevertheless, I can avoid a lot of problems comparing to Java imperative/OO approach.

I see this post more as a reminder that when using impure FP you still have to be careful about some tricky features

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Scala vs. Java in real world
But is the bytecode generated by Java more efficient than the one generated by Scala (in comparable situations ofc) ?

And which reasons would make you choose Java over Scala?

pedrorijo91··on SSD Prices in a Free Fall
Who besides Apple is 'forcing' users to use SSD? Even most of so called 'Ultrabooks' use HDD in order to become cheaper.

If almost no one understands the performance and reliability difference a SSD can give, and almost no one 'enforces' users to buy SSD, how is this technology become cheaper in a so fast rate?

pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Couch Surfing
Yeah, I was also thinking about taking something from my country. I guess it empowers the goal of couch surfing :)
pedrorijo91··on Do you all still have personal websites?
Well, nowadays I guess plenty of developers simply use github-pages as personal website (myself included). It's a more expressive way to present yourself (employers included) than facebook and linkedin :)
pedrorijo91··on Ask HN: Google keep app for iphone
Yeah, I've googled the android app and it seems great. On the other hand the iphone apps available....some of them even ask for your username and password instead of google auth. Please, c'mon !

pedrorijo91··on GitHub Contributions Are Bullshit
Can't understand why bother with contributions graph? It's like evaluate a programmer by LOC. We all know that lines of code ofter represent bad design, or that nor all lines have same complexity...
