There are some first-mover advantages when your country creates the system
peder··on Grok 4.7
How's any project you've ever done?
peder··on Grok 4.7
exactly, the benchmark just needs to be downvoted into oblivion each times it's posted. The outcome is not deterministic and the model needs to determine what level of detail is appropriate for an svg. There is no wrong answer to this unless it's obviously un-Pelican-like.
peder··on Grok 4.7
I think you're seeing a big shift around it.... since it's been markedly cheaper and also still easily available from OpenCode, it's getting large enterprise traction.
peder··on Amiga Unix, Again
Hacker News is so annoying about this. It really feels like sour grapes that people are shipping cool projects without one of the Y Combinator-type software engineers blessing the project with their handwritten code.
peder··on How Much Has Trump Made from Crypto? ($1.4B from 2025 Federal Disclosure)
Why are you assuming this is corruption?
peder··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
Sooooo much of what is considered "code quality" today is irrelevant when robots are writing the code. We've been largely optimizing for things like composability/unit testability in the past 15 or so years, and that's primarily a human concern that's unrelated to the final output.

Totally agreed that we're not looking at the correct metric right now. Increasingly, code quality will be determined by outcomes.

peder··on I'm becoming AI-blind
I'm not saying digest it, I'm saying be able to scan it/skim it/move on, but ignoring it won't help.
peder··on I'm becoming AI-blind
> There's some psychological mechanism by which my brain immediately recognizes AI generated text and just short-circuits to "there is no information here".

I think you need to self-correct here, because otherwise you'll be ineffective in an information setting, where I expect AI-generated resources will not only be the norm, they will absolutely swamp the environment.

peder··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
Delegation can still mean deep technical connection to the code, just without needing to write the code itself.
peder··on Grok 4.6 scores 61 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index
Does it matter? Why turn it into a popularity contest?
peder··on Why do we assume everyone should be working?
That’s not a right-wing thought BTW. Publoc schools in Germany for instance are highly exclusionary.
peder··on What's the largest software project AI can complete on its own?
That doesn't happen with a proper test suite. Give guardrails and it's not an issue.
peder··on What's the largest software project AI can complete on its own?
> tons of duplication that lead to whack-a-mole

The future is duplication. Code is no longer meant to be read by humans but by machines.

peder··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
This is an obvious next step tho? When I want news, I'll just ask Claude. Everything funnels to these providers?
peder··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
And TBF, I don't think they've established why the issue is so prevalent in Michigan specifically, since Taylor Farms apparently doesn't have any unique connection to Michigan.
peder··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
Absolutely valid to attack the political beliefs here. Farmed fish is somehow considered ecologically harmful but it's significantly less harmful than overfishing and allows for bringing extremely efficient, healthy food to the continental interior, which has the potential to reduce heart disease without medication.

It's so narrow-minded to treat farmed fish as some moral failing.

peder··on London Gatwick has launched a robotic airport parking service
Presumably this robotic valet will shift more towards long-term parking distant from the airport when it's known a customer is not returning. Today that's presumably cost ineffective.
peder··on Claude Opus 5
Why does it “promise” to destroy your life. Thats absurd hyperbole.
peder··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Right, it's a false signal. It doesn't mean that more things are retained.

I think what happens in these types of threads is that the people who like handwritten notes, perhaps even obsessively so, all pour in. But that population of handwriting fans isn't necessarily representative of the population overall.

peder··on Does creatine make you smarter?
People love to float this myth that everyone's just walking around dehydrated all the time and they do so based on absolutely no data.
peder··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
All the models do this well. It's a test that tell us nothing at this point.
peder··on Hacker wipes Romania's land registry database
And I think it's a label that's used freely on Hacker News against Eastern Europeans
peder··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
should we check with you every time we want to do anything or...?
peder··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
> Infinite scroll is very obviously unnecessary

All the different flavors of yogurt in the grocery store are unnecessary. We only need 2.

peder··on Grok 4.5
Um, ok, I was just saying what their product strategy might be, nobody asked you whether you'd use it
peder··on Grok 4.5
Frontier is one thing, but low-cost really good models are another. All the chatbots and day-to-day corporate bots are likely to use models that offer the best performance at the lowest cost. I think Grok has an angle here if they can build customer trust.
peder··on How to Survive 3 Years in North Korea as a Foreigner
> The less snarky answer is that our current system does not have a functioning global government

What an odd thing to say. Even when there were monolithic governments ruling over certain sphere of influence like the USSR over Eastern Europe, you still had countries break ranks like Yugoslavia and Romania. A single unified government does not mean that individual actors do not know and use their own leverage to advance their own interests.

North Korea is independent for a variety of reasons, and it's not clear that a pro-US North Korea is an all-around win with no downsides for the US. I think both the US and China like having buffer states to avoid flashpoints for war.

peder··on Resetting Xbox
Everyone in this thread thinking they know what's best for other people's money.

They're getting below the rate of return of treasuries. That's abysmal.
