peakaboo··on Zelensky video deepfake
Try reddit, it's much faster than hacker news on these things.
peakaboo··on Vim Reference Guide
I use Ctrl-c instead of esc, works really nice for me. I prefer it to jk actually. But that's the thing, choice. That's the best thing about our tools and operating systems. Respect for the user choice.
peakaboo··on Technical Debt: How do you get out of the bottleneck?
This happens constantly, the entire tech industry runs in whatever direction Google in particular is going. First it was Hadoop and all the pain that came with that, and now it's microservices and kubernetes and all the shit that brings into our tech stacks.

Stop sprinting is good but also : stop following Google. You are not Google. You do not have the needs of Google. Just stop it.

Pick the simplest tech stack you can find. This gives 100x more time to your developers to work on company solutions and not fighting technical complexity.

peakaboo··on Stroke Rates Are Increasing Among Young People
Or it's the vaccines.
peakaboo··on The Future of Kubernetes
Insightful.

Next level for you: look at society and realize it works the same.

peakaboo··on The Silence Is Deafening (2020)
YouTube and Google and their attitude is the problem. And that we don't have many popular alternatives.

Our tech overlords are the equivalent of Kings now, above the law. And their attitude to humanity stinks.

peakaboo··on Is Elden Ring that hard? Well, it depends what you mean by “hard”
I think they could just put "auto scale difficulty" in settings. Players who want a challange can turn it off, others can run through the world easily and feel like they beat the game.
peakaboo··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
Im still against censorship but covid showed me that there are people who believe anything. :/

You can change entire elections this way, by controlling what propaganda is ok and what isn't. But make no mistake, its actually all propaganda.

peakaboo··on Arch Linux turned 20 years old today. It was released on 11/March/2002
The best linux every year.
peakaboo··on Linux 5.18 Plans to Switch from C89 to C11/GNU11 C Version
Is there any performance significance from this change?
peakaboo··on How to get the most out of your 1:1s
I have 1 on 1s too and we talk about anything at all, including status updates if the employee wants too. Because it all builds a connection. It's like a coffee chat.

I think it works the best when it's completely open to anything at all.

peakaboo··on Just say no to :latest
You said to use it for development. But I don't use Artifactory so maybe you meant to use the latest for production also, if it passes the build.
peakaboo··on Putin Calls Sanctions a Declaration of War – As Zelenskyy Pleads for More Aid
We should all switch over to Putins way of viewing the world. Pretty much the same ideology that 3 year old children has. Works for them right?
peakaboo··on Mozilla patches two use-after-free vulnerabilities (ab)used in the wild
Security is what you worry about as a top concern? Have you ever been personally hacked by a malicious website?

I've been running Firefox since version 3, every day, searching for all kinds of stuff online daily (I work as a devops and programmer guy). Never had anything happen whatsoever.

Firefox has alerted me that my email has been part of hacks of random sites however, but since I use a password manager with different passwords for each site, I don't even worry about that. Chrome doesn't even inform you about those hacks as far as I know.

peakaboo··on Just say no to :latest
I've also seen the same. As soon as people start locking versions, that code is no longer updated and nobody will change it, because it's extra work to do so.

I personally think running latest is the best thing to do. And if something fails, you downgrade it temporarily until the latest work again. It's pretty much opposite to what is recommended, and it's just the best solution in my opinion.

peakaboo··on Just say no to :latest
So what actually always happens with this approach is that companies stay on ancient docker images, because there is never time for updates as long as they work.

It's the same with locking python pip packages to specific versions. Nobody ever looks at it again and you run code that is 5 years old in production. People only look at it when it breaks.

peakaboo··on Assassination of Boris Nemtsov
He is an actual evil person. He is interesting from that point of view. Sending soldiers into Ukraine, telling them they are fighting nazis and that people will welcome them with open arms...

About 10000 Russian casualties so far in this invasion. They have no training, no air support, no fuel, nothing. Putin is sending all these people to their deaths believing a lie that the Ukraine people are nazis, while he is playing bunker bitch at home, afraid to even sit next to people in his own staff.

peakaboo··on ‘Mac Studio’ [desktop computer] is coming
Yes that's all built into Firefox sync. It sync your tabs and bookmarks and much more across computers and phones automatically. You can also send specific tabs from your phone to your computer and when you sit down on the computer, the tab opens. :)

If you are on chrome, I'm not sure if there is something like that but it should exist some plugin...

peakaboo··on Pre-infection vitamin D3 levels association with severity of Covid-19 illness
If you search on "horse dewormer", you should be able to find lots of mainstream articles ridiculing it, and also Joe Rogan was made fun of a lot for using it instead of vaccines.

If you can't find it on Google, maybe you need to use Duckduckgo or even better, sign up for Kagi search beta. :)

peakaboo··on Pre-infection vitamin D3 levels association with severity of Covid-19 illness
It's not like this was discussed 2 years ago on "conspiracy" channels or anything.... /s

I stil remember the "horse dewormer" propaganda about ivermectin.

peakaboo··on ‘Mac Studio’ [desktop computer] is coming
Dropbox solves this. I run multiple Linux computers and have my Downloads, Code and Docs folders synced between all computers. Works flawlessly.
peakaboo··on Ask HN: Is GCP harder to use than AWS?
I'm certified architect in both AWS and GCP and I prefer AWS. But it's possible it's because I learned it first.

GCP is easier to start with for me, but becomes annoying because it's missing things that I can do in aws.

For example, cloud run can't run docker containers that doesn't listen to a port. Just run it once and shut down like Fargate does in AWS.

They want people to use kubernetes which is more complex and has features a lot of people don't need ever. Fargate is simple and just works.

So I prefer AWS for reasons like that but I think GCP is easier to understand.

peakaboo··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
Completely disagree. We have proven that a lot of developers are both happier and more productive when working remotely.

The open office is the absolute worst possible environment for being productive. I could probably be more productive in the middle of a highway.

peakaboo··on Poll: Would you choose Windows, Linux, or macOS for a workstation?
I've been on Linux for about 10 years. It keeps me a happy, productive developer.
peakaboo··on Russia and Ukraine: Grassroots Resistance to Putin’s Invasion
You can imagine how much braver those people are than Americans. Who here would protest if you could get dragged into a van and possibly disappear, be tortured or worse?
peakaboo··on Ask HN: Why aren't you charging money for your side project?
I think donations is one way to go.

Since I'm on Linux, I use a lot of software from people outside the big tech camp, such as the awesome kitty terminal.

There was a bug in it which unreported and when the developer fixed it in less than 24 hours, I signed up to give him 10 dollars per month. About 800 other people were already signed up and giving donations (possibly smaller).

People just like to give back, so make it easy to do and they will. But you need to make a product they use every day.

peakaboo··on Wuhan market was epicentre of pandemic’s start, studies suggest
The difference is - humans now has the capability to create viruses. And it's obvious that covid is created by humans. You just need to look at its generic code to figure that out.
peakaboo··on MBT LAW – Anti-tank weapon being used in Ukraine
I'm Swedish and it was in our news yesterday that Ukraine has requested these things from Sweden as a top priority.

No decision yet if Sweden will or not.

peakaboo··on Defensive tactics from the modern history of urban warfare
Snipers intentionally shoot to not kill sometimes, so they get more targets.
peakaboo··on Defensive tactics from the modern history of urban warfare
It's a war. Normal rules to not apply. If you are ever in one, you will want a weapon, trust me.
