pdx_flyer··on A supersonic engine core makes the perfect power turbine
There are already quite a few rapid start gas peakers not only being produced but in-service. Nothing about Boom's stands out as being significantly different.

Grifts really have become mainstream.
pdx_flyer··on Portland is not burning. Here's live context and sourced fact checks
My parents live in a small town in Texas and are in the MAGA camp. They came to Portland a couple of years ago to visit and said "oh, it's not like what was on TV"... Yes, that's what I was trying to tell you.

Now they are saying I should move based on what they see on Fox News. I'm dumbfounded; Don't you remember what it was like when you were here? It hasn't changed.

Part of it is a small town mentality, the big city is just dangerous. The rest of it is just being spoon fed clips of the same protest footage over and over and over again.

Yep, everything is dry, including the 5,200 park that sits less than a mile from downtown (Forest Park).

Oh, are the homeless the reason the National Guard was called in? I thought it was for the protests. /s

Yes, Portland has a homeless issue. It has had one since I moved here in 2013 (and probably before then). Covid made it worse but the issue is slowly getting better. But again, homelessness isn't what the President and Kristi Noem are talking about.

A bunch of them are vegetation fires. We are very dry here right now, so any thrown cigarette is a risk. We are supposed to get some rain this weekend.

I'm glad someone posted this here. Outside of the 1 block where the protest is happening, you would never know anything is out of the ordinary in Portland.

pdx_flyer··on Flights to Reagan National Airport in D.C. received false collision alerts
"'It's been happening all morning. Let me know if you see anything. No one else has seen anything except for on the TCAS,' one air traffic controller can be heard telling an inbound flight. Based on CBS News' review of the ATC audio, at least 12 flight crews reported receiving apparent false TCAS alerts — leading three flights to perform go-arounds between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. ET on Saturday."

Seeing the videos/photos it was obvious some of them weren't even drones, they were commercial aircraft.
pdx_flyer··on Reconductoring: Boosting U.S. Grid Capacity Efficiently
Fair enough. I had a conversation with one utility that was fine with transformers popping (even if preventable) because a popped transformer becomes a capitalizable expense.
pdx_flyer··on Reconductoring: Boosting U.S. Grid Capacity Efficiently
Good points.

Have you seen a lot of phase-shifting transformers in the U.S.? In my experience they've mostly been in Europe with a few specialized applications in the States.

I would think a utility would want to reconductor the other circuits otherwise they're leaving benefits on the table right?

pdx_flyer··on Reconductoring: Boosting U.S. Grid Capacity Efficiently
The article doesn't say much about it but I am sure there is significant work being done at the transmission substations as well to support the extra capacity.
pdx_flyer··on Airlines are running out of 4-digit flight numbers
British Airways frequently has flight in the air at the same time with the same flight number. For ATC these are typically identified with a letter at the end of the flight number like BA 123E or BA 345Y.

pdx_flyer··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
Overall it feels like a punitive measure against Lufthansa, rather than spending the time to get them an ILS clearance.

For reference the flight is usually a 6:45p arrival but was very late on the evening in question.

Lots of US bound traffic took very southerly routings today to avoid UK airspace. My guess is that this will continue until the outage is completely resolved.
pdx_flyer··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
Nope, not ground-sourced.

May I ask where you are located (generally)?

pdx_flyer··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
I am starting to wonder if there is just that much demand in the PNW. Maybe due to a large amount of older construction being built without ducting (baseboard heating)?
pdx_flyer··on Heat Pumps – The Well-Tempered Future of A/Cs
I was looking for a whole home heat pump and got some quotes that started at $27,000 for a home that is 1800 square feet. That price is a bit hard to swallow. I really don't want to just cool one or two rooms in the house.
pdx_flyer··on How to Start Your Blog in 2023
I write pretty frequently and use WordPress. Over the past few years I've felt that it's clunky to just get words out there. I've wanted to move to something simpler but looking at the options like Jekyll or self-hosted Ghost just seems like a different type of work rather than less work.

I want something with a clean, easy to read front end -- that's where WordPress has really struggled, good looking "blog" focused themes.

pdx_flyer··on Yeti ATR 72 crash inquiry examines feathering of both propellers
"On Feb 15th 2023 Nepal's AAIC (Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission) released their preliminary report summarizing the sequence of events:

At 10:56:27, the PF disengaged the Autopilot System (AP) at an altitude of 721 feet Above Ground Level (AGL). The PF then called for “FLAPS 30” at 10:56:32, and the PM replied, “Flaps 30 and descending”. The flight data recorder (FDR) data did not record any flap surface movement at that time. Instead, the propeller rotation speed (Np) of both engines decreased simultaneously to less than 25%1 and the torque (Tq) started decreasing to 0%, which is consistent with both propellers going into the feathered condition. On the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) area microphone recording, a single Master Caution chime was recorded at 10:56:36. The flight crew then carried out the “Before Landing Checklist” before starting the left turn onto the base leg. During that time, the power lever angle increased from 41% to 44%. At the point, Np of both propellers were recorded as Non-Computed Data (NCD) in the FDR and the torque (Tq) of both engines were at 0%. When propellers are in feather, they are not producing thrust."

For reference here is a picture of the controls. The feathering is in the middle and full feather is a little bit higher than 30 degrees of flaps. The lever for the flaps can be seen on the far right.

pdx_flyer··on United flight from Hawaii plunged to within 800ft of Pacific Ocean
I would assume that situational awareness for those inside the plane would have actually been pretty poor. They were climbing through clouds when the dive began so seeing the orientation of the plane to the earth would have been very spotty.
pdx_flyer··on United flight from Hawaii plunged to within 800ft of Pacific Ocean
Originally reported by The Air Current here - https://theaircurrent.com/aviation-safety/united-maui-dive-u...

"The aircraft quickly recovered, but not before descending below 775 feet. Two people familiar with the incident said the climb produced forces of nearly 2.7 times the force of gravity on the aircraft and its occupants as that steep descent transitioned to an 8,600 foot per minute climb. The entire incident appears to have stretched no more than 45 seconds and in between radio calls with air traffic controllers in Maui, according to LiveATC recordings reviewed by The Air Current"

Later on in the article it states that no mention of the incident was made to Air Traffic Control and the flight continued on as normal.

pdx_flyer··on 30 People Tell Us What Homelessness Is Like
There was a comment that was deleted about yelling or spraying homeless near people's homes and I had started writing a reply, then the comment was deleted. I thought I'd share some thoughts as someone who has a number of homeless individuals living within 10 feet of their single family home.

-----------------

Recently had a homeless encampment constructed next to my house. It is not great but at the same time it's a strange social situation to be thrust into. The encampment started out fairly orderly and clean but over the past two weeks I've found needles, human feces and other trash on my property. I have a small child and more small children use the path where this homeless encampment is so I've taken it upon myself to keep it needle and feces free.

I've never considered spraying the people who live in the encampment or even yelling at them but I have asked if they need any services or if there is anyone they would like me to contact. Most of the time the response is "no thanks" or "I'm already talking to services". Sometimes I get asked for specific things, "I have a heater that runs off of alcohol or something and could use some more fuel". Sometimes it's as simple as asking for their water jugs to be refilled. I am happy to oblige those human needs requests but for the fuel I will typically offer blankets as an alternative.

Still, I am frustrated, mostly with the city and county that they have allowed this to happen. I don't fully know the answer but I know that what is happening now isn't it.

pdx_flyer··on US installs record solar capacity as prices keep falling
The biggest unknown right now is how FERC 2222 is going to play out. It essentially allows consumer solar to be aggregated and sold on the wholesale markets. As aggregators come online and prices fluctuate there are going to be even more regulations as federal and state officials find flaws and gaps in how the system works.

I tend to lean toward battery storage as being the piece that will tip the scale. As more efficient and longer lasting batteries come online, grid ops will become a bit easier and some of the DER capacity that would typically be shed could be stored for later needs.
