pdubs··on Unlocked phones are the way to go
TMo will (or at least used to) give you a range extender for free if you wouldn't get service in your residence. Probably not for prepaid though.
pdubs··on Technology Change: .Net to Scala
...is open source.
pdubs··on Jeff Atwood's Code Keyboard Review
I've heard that argument too, but so does Rosewill and there are definitely some quality issues there; that's certainly up for debate though. Some might also call Filco overpriced, but I've certainly never heard that about a WASD board.
pdubs··on Jeff Atwood's Code Keyboard Review
Down at the bottom of the keyboard's site it says "104-Key and 87-Key Models Available".
pdubs··on Jeff Atwood's Code Keyboard Review
>no better than existing models

He didn't really go into that though. He looked at features, not materials or build quality, which are both major factors in mechanical keyboards. I can tell you first-hand that the materials that Logitech, Cooler Master, and Corsair use on those particular keyboards don't compare to anything that WASD uses; the K60 isn't even completely mechanical! Those are all "budget" mechanical keyboards. The Filco is more comparable, but at the same price and without backlighting or MX Clears.

pdubs··on Jeff Atwood's Code Keyboard Review
Absolutely not. WASD Keyboards has reputation for impeccable build quality, reliability, and support. The combination of MX Clear switches (somewhat rare), backlighting, thick steel backplate, combined with the build quality put this in the "you get what you pay for" category as far as I can see. The comparisons that this poster linked to aren't really comparable when it comes to fit and finish...apart from maybe the Filco, which is the exact same price!

It may seem absurd to spend $100+ on a keyboard to many/most people, but there's definitely a subset of people who really enjoy a nice feeling, reliable mechanical keyboard.

pdubs··on Stanford Javascript Crypto Library
It's useful if you store things in local storage.
pdubs··on Netflix should buy the NFL Sunday Ticket rights, not Google
Has Netflix done live video on anything approaching this scale? I don't doubt that they have the capabilities to put a live streaming infrastructure together for something like this, but DTV's out starting next year and there's a lot of work to get done in that time. That would be a lot of risk.
pdubs··on Microsoft Said To Give Zero Day Exploits To US Government Before It Patches Them
I can't fault MSFT for this at all.

"Hey your systems have been vulnerable for a week; here's the patch!" just doesn't fly too well with major customers with very real needs for security.

I personally don't mind them being used in real targeted surveillance either. That surveillance is going to happen anyway.

pdubs··on Quick Redis Benchmark: AWS vs. Azure
It would probably be seen as anti-competitive if they licensed between business units for free.
pdubs··on Court found NSA surveillance unconstitutional in 2011
That's legally useless without the details though.
pdubs··on Court found NSA surveillance unconstitutional in 2011
It's not as malicious as Ron makes it out to be.

Here's Groklaw's bit on it: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20130610101148583

>The opinion Movant seeks cannot be released by the Government not only because it is classified but also because it is under this Court’s seal. As Judge Bates has explained, “[t]he FISC is a unique court,” whereas “[o]ther courts operate primarily in public, with secrecy the exception; the FISC operates primarily in secret, with public access the exception.” In re Release, 526 F. Supp. 2d at 487-88. The FISC maintains this operational secrecy because, unlike any other court, its “entire docket relates to the collection of foreign intelligence by the federal government.” Id. at 487.

It's secret simply by the nature of the court, not by specific executive instruction.

pdubs··on Sean Parker's Wedding Defense
There was the pretty major point made that Parker could not have legally applied for permits on this land, since it's privately owned land owned by the hotel that was hosting his wedding; the hotel should have.
pdubs··on Continuing the Windows 8 vision with Windows 8.1
>aggregated view of many content sources

I hope this means that the main Start Screen search will now search across programs and settings. Makes it much easier for things that may or may not be settings or apps (Control Panel, Device Manager, Event Viewer, Disk Administration). That's been my #1 gripe with Win8 from day 1; they got rid of universal start menu searching.

pdubs··on Lying Microsoft Advertising
For "normal" things I ended up slightly leaning towards Bing; for programming and technical searching it was Google by a mile.
pdubs··on Why is there only one Elon Musk?
Paypal was pretty revolutionary for its time. Not quite "cool sci-fi shit", but close, in perspective.
pdubs··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing
I challenged the adjustments to one of my returns and the most difficult part for me was finding a damn fax machine while I was on hold with a very helpful woman at the IRS. In the end they admitted they made a mistake (to their credit, an understandable one) in saying that I made a mistake and I lost a total of maybe an hour or two of my time.
pdubs··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing
Only if it's malicious or intentional. A mistake will be picked up and you'll get a form a year or two later asking you to accept or challenge proposed corrections. If less tax was paid than required you have to pay that + interest...which really isn't that unreasonable.

I'm not saying the whole system isn't needlessly complex, but don't make it out like the IRS is actively out to get you.

pdubs··on A $4.99 utility that might just have saved Windows 8
I recently got a laptop with a decent multi-touch touchpad and was pleasantly surprised at how well the swipe and scroll gestures work with Windows 8. I get around quicker than using a real mouse and keyboard and it's fairly intuitive.

On my dual-monitor desktop though it's terrible and I end up cursing it out seemingly daily.

pdubs··on Amazon stops selling Sim City V over game issues
One-time cost vs. ongoing cost for years to come? It's not as simple as you make it out to be.
pdubs··on Substandard crypto needlessly puts Evernote accounts at risk
MD5? Unbelievable. I was relieved when I read salted and hashed on Evernote's blog post, but trying to sell MD5 as even remotely secure is actively idiotic. I'd rather get a "yeah we fucked up on the whole password storage thing" than "yeah MD5 is secure". Give me a break...
pdubs··on VPN Services That Take Your Anonymity Seriously
The thing with the whole "six strikes" thing is that there's no motivation to actually enforce it. Businesses generally will not turn away people willing to give them money, especially if their monopolistic market position allows them to gouge the customer up to their pain threshold.
pdubs··on Front-End CSS Frameworks
There's a couple flavors of Creative Commons licenses too, which work well for artwork and media, but are terrible for source code.
pdubs··on Using a Hosts File To Make The Internet Not Suck As Much
Also did this. Once a domain is looked up and in the local DNS cache it's fine, but the initial DNS lookup can get stupidly slow, especially on older hardware.
pdubs··on Elon Musk's Data Doesn't Back Up His Claims of New York Times Fakery
I think a more apt comparison would be to Aston Martin as far as the target market.
pdubs··on How an unsigned rapper changed music
They're totally different styles of flow.

I find Macklemore's flow to be much closer to a prose spoken word style of flow than someone like Nas, Eminem, or Jay-Z. It's tough, perhaps misleading, to compare given that.

pdubs··on Almost Flat Design
Definitely isn't RTM.

Here are those sections in RTM. http://imgur.com/Uz5xi0t http://imgur.com/k3Comek

edit: It appears the reply buttons do squish like that on narrower screens though, but it's at around 1000px wide or less, so that's really a non-point in this day and age. Gradient issue isn't there though.

pdubs··on How to use Photoshop in a VM on Ubuntu
It does provide detailed steps for a solution to a problem. I'm sure many people will appreciate that.
pdubs··on Adobe almost does something amazing by accident
It will also choke on certain vector formats in PSD as well as CMYK PSDs.
pdubs··on Everything You Know About Fitness is a Lie (2011)
Both at once is a difficult feat. Fitness is a long play though. Get stronger, then get leaner (caloric deficit), then get stronger, then get leaner... It works pretty well over time.
