Let them experience the pain of rebuilding that old wheel :)
But then I consider, I've seen many individuals who are such strong engineers AND communicators, and deliver amazing work.
Yet, I was constantly paid higher than them, simply because of my more aggressive/arrogant attitude.
Time has given me a different view. There ARE pay discrepancies that shouldn't exist, but do simply because of lack of information.
And companies fuel the idea that it's something we need to protect, from our fellow colleagues because we worked/earned those pay discrepancies.
But in the end, it's the company that benefits the most from those discrepancies. Not me and not you.
Attractiveness is a trait that signals health, not intelligence/social skill/etc.
That's why we evolved to desire attractive people.
It has nothing to do with being a marker for intelligence.
As an arts/law graduate, who has since moved into a senior, highly technical IT role, I can honestly say that had I not moved into the IT field, my existing and already large university tuition debt would never have been repaid within my lifetime.
There is such a huge glut of humanities graduates in Australia now, that unless you are graduating within the very very top percentile, you are guaranteed to have wasted both time and money for no return.
I will be tracking their technical reporting more closely over the next year.
This was intriguing, thank you.
But I do hate the lack of productive areas. Although, I did once work in a tech giant that really spaced out some individual desks, and positioned many of them next to beautiful open windows.
I might choose another language for perf characteristics that JS cannot match, but otherwise Javascript is a truly expressive lang right now.
Why? Because impressions matter and will frame you as "X", until you strongly challenge and overthrow that initial impression.
However, I'd carve out an exception. In an interview where you have, without a doubt, not done well and there's greater than a 80% chance that you feel you won't proceed, this question may potentially be a good hail mary, for salvaging the interview.
But, I've never used the technique before. And unless you have alot of interview experience, it will also be difficult to make judgement calls on how well or bad an interview has gone.
This is a self-induced economic freeze.
Yes, an unfreeze won't immediately revive the world, because some capacities will have been lost along the way. But once demand ramps back up, you'll have entrepreneurial individuals and companies findings extraordinary ways to meet that rising demand, including who knows, repurchasing/rebuilding the required capacities :)
Which is a good thing for the rest of, ironically and economically.
Which is fine. If you're naturally talented at whiteboarding, great. If not, but you've prepared months ahead of time, great also.
If you're not naturally talented, and haven't prepared because of naivety or due to some principle, well, that's not exactly a great signal to an employer.
(Disclosure: We did this at a company I worked at).

Rationally consider what conditions could be creating the current scenario, and keep all of them in mind when considering any news/claims that Japan is an outlier.
Also agree that COVID-19 will be fertile ground for dissertations in the future.
My other suspicion is severe cases will try their best to hold off on self-reporting given the strict government testing criteria and lack of awareness/panic.
This is one key way that Japanese and US society diverge - Americans are much less afraid to 'make a fool of themselves' if they believe they are correct/in danger. Japanese unfortunately, much more so and especially when given direct government directions.
Fixed this for you.
(Additional comment: I will counter with I'm really amazed how quickly people threw away the economy in an effort to reduce lost lives. Normally, I expect people to be much more mercurial)
I'll stick to frameworks that emit standard HTML thanks.
