I don't think anyone is silly enough to suggest putting captchas on ads.
* Mandatory censorship of information (Google before leaving, Bing)
* Foreign ownership limits (aka forced intellectual property transfers)
* Capital outflow restrictions
* Heavy subsidies allowing local firms to sell products at below cost (e.g. steel, bicycles)
Still have to rely on cash and credit card, or set up a Chinese bank account and get the Chinese version of Alipay/WeChat Pay.
In particular, they should change Taiwan's entry in ISO-3166 before scowling at foreign companies for using a standardized country list.
I'd consider SMS as an "app" too, with the limitation of no group chats, and requires a roaming SIM card if you happen to go abroad.
I wish we left that in the past. I live in one of the largest financial hubs in the world and all the budgeting apps here still use username/password sharing for bank accounts.
However, I don't see the direct connection between adding telemetry to drive product decisions (e.g. improving conversion flows, prioritizing features/bugs) and pressure from investors. I think it was just bad communication and hubris on GitLab's part.
It's easy to avoid tracking users when you've got a 20-feature SaaS with a few thousand users. Trying to manage a product with millions of users, thousands of features and open bugs/feature requests is another ballgame and I think telemetry is fine as long as it's first-party (or opt-in), anonymized and explained properly (see Mozilla).
I understand that it's probably Google's fault for not providing APIs/permissions but it's still terrible UX. I only use F-Droid when an app isn't available on the Play Store.
It might shine for foreign transactions: no fee (usually 2%) + 1% cashback seems pretty good. If we're being realistic though, they'll probably have a terrible FX spread.
