pcj-github··on The Almanack of Naval Ravikant
A book of tweets? No thanks.
pcj-github··on Ask HN: Thoughts on new GitHub layout?
I feel like they are setting up a design iteration pathway to making changes that will ultimately make it look more like vscode. Seems like a MSFT influenced-thing. Don't love it.
pcj-github··on Wikipedia Lost 3B Organic Search Visits to Google in 2019
Although it is handy from a user's perspective to quickly get the answer they want, scraping the information off Wikipedia and packaging it slightly different has always felt like cheating to me. Seems like this behavior will be part of the inevitable anti-trust case against Google.
pcj-github··on Making Emacs Popular Again
Used emacs for years, switched to VSC as it's just more compatible with the present time in terms of plugins, languages, and even simply working with other people. Emacs is a thing of the past. I do really miss the kill-ring though.
pcj-github··on Riding the Tiger: Lessons Learned Implementing Istio
Can completely relate to this article... Have been up and down rabbit holes trying to find an ingress controller that works well as an edge proxy for gRPC streaming services (tried nginx-ingress, contour, esp, istio, ambassador). Very challenging to get the configuration right (of which I have not found yet).
pcj-github··on It’s Time to Build
Did anyone else come away with this article thinking Marc Andressen is overrated and completely out of touch?
pcj-github··on Study: No evidence of efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in hospitalized patients
Aside from these results, what is the proposed mechanism of benefit here?

And why are we expecting a mechanism with hydroxychloroquine against this virus when essentially no small molecule therapies are effective against viruses in general?

pcj-github··on Dow Falls 2997 points worst drop since 1987 crash
Consumer habits and psychology are going to be affected for years. We're going to see jobless rate skyrocket, small and large businesses defaulting left and right. Your tech job is definitely not safe either.
pcj-github··on Pandemic Ventilator Project
I'm surprised we haven't seen anything detailing the supply chain involving O2. This is as important than the actual machine.
pcj-github··on Open Source Initiative bans co-founder, Eric S Raymond
I side with ESR, this is silly.

What I think the moderators should have done in this circumstance is actually moderate. In cases like this where things are getting heated and you're obviously in an un-usual circumstance, schedule a real conversation to diffuse the situation. Slack, Zoom, Hangouts, phone call, whatever. Anything where tone and emotion can be effectively communicated.

Can you do this always? No. Should you do it when you're founding member is at risk of being banned from the mailing list? Obviously, yes.

This is what happens when people rely too much on email.

pcj-github··on Green Tea Is Inversely Associated with the Incidence of Influenza Infection
I'm not sure I'd bank much confidence on a study that used two different surveys of kids and their parents on self-reported tea consumption and possible influenza symptoms. Also, while drinking 1-5 cups per/day was associated in their statistical significance, >5 cups did not.
pcj-github··on Google Kubernetes Engine is introducing a cluster management fee on June 6
Thomas Kurian is going to be the Steve Ballmer of Google, and he's currently tearing up Google from the inside. Google leadership need to wise up and give this guy his walking papers.
pcj-github··on The growth of command-line options, 1979-Present
Seems like a natural progression given the growth in usage of these tools over the last few decades. How many people were using these tools in 1979 compared to today?
pcj-github··on I Want Off Mr. Golang's Wild Ride
Got really tired and bored with this. Maybe structure the article with some sort of meaningful abstract so that you can summarize the points you want to make up front without having to subject the reader to 9/10ths of this article.
pcj-github··on I Want Off Mr. Golang's Wild Ride

pcj-github··on YouTube can restrict PragerU because it is a private forum, appeals court rules
If YouTube had to survive independently of Google/Alphabet it would look vastly different. Not sure if that is good or bad.
pcj-github··on Rome: An experimental JavaScript toolchain
I'm not seeing a ton a tests in this repo, did I miss them? Seems like it will be very hard project to maintain and gather community support without better test coverage.
pcj-github··on Heart doctors 'held back stent death data'
Open-heart surgery is certainly no picnic, I'm not suggesting that it is. It depends on who the patient is. If you're talking about an 82yo man with renal insufficiency, that's not exactly a person you're going to rush into surgery. But if you are a relatively healthy 67yo who smoked for a decade but not actively smoking, getting a stent is likely not your best option because your expected life expectancy is still fairly decent. The point is that many people are not getting both sides of the story because cardiologists act as both the gatekeepers and the interventionalists.
pcj-github··on Heart doctors 'held back stent death data'
This is pretty well-known phenomenon to vascular practitioners...

Interventional cardiologists chronically low-ball the dangers of stents and gloss-over their well-known short-term performance. Who'd a thunk that jamming a foreign body in a small artery ends up making it worse in the long-term?

Patients with coronary bypass often have a better long-term outlook, but in many cases the cardiologists simply don't refer to cardiac surgeons to line their own pockets (and admit "defeat").

pcj-github··on On Resigning from Google
My anecdotal observation is that Google is currently experiencing a (slight) brain drain... Many highly qualified and experienced engineers have recently left. I wonder how many 1x engineers it is going to take to maintain all that software when the 100x and 10x engineers are gone. Not a simple math problem.
pcj-github··on Fungi that eats radiation found inside Chernobyl reactor
Please don't post articles from foxnews. They target lowball intelligence; I find it insulting to the hackernews community.
pcj-github··on Python dicts are now ordered
This was my initial thought as well. Seems like people are celebrating, but this is going to be a source of difficult to figure out bugs.
pcj-github··on An Update on Bradfitz: Leaving Google
Question for Brad (if you have time): other than Go, what Google projects that became open source deserve honorable mention?
pcj-github··on Pure CSS – Lace
Knowing my own frustrations with CSS, I cannot imagine any project more maddening than this.
pcj-github··on Bazel 1.0
For me, the difference between other build systems and bazel was like the shift from CVS to git... Profoundly better internal data model, but definitely a learning curve.
pcj-github··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
Increases my conviction that vaping products should only be available by prescription, which any primary care physician would be more than happy to prescribe for a smoker hoping to quit.

As for the ~40% of 7th and 8th graders that are vaping at my kids middle school, well, that number would hopefully decrease.

pcj-github··on Acute Effects of Electronic Cigarette Aerosol Inhalation on Vascular Function
Yeah, the mortality rate of people in this condition (resting O2 levels in the 60-70%) is probably at least 50% 1-year mortality (half will die in the next year).

Which is not exactly the population this paper is trying to shed light on, but thanks for sharing his experience.

pcj-github··on I’ve spent five years writing a JavaScript framework
Where's the app that you built with it? If you have not actually used your own "framework" to build a meaningful app, I'd argue you've spent 5 years poised crouching at the starting block waiting to hear the gun go off. Otherwise, you can't possibly even begin to understand the realities of working with it. This is why popular frameworks tend to come out of large active shops that have real problems to solve.
pcj-github··on ECMO pumps blood out of the body, oxygenates it and returns it to the body
As a former vascular surgeon and having worked with this directly, ECMO is definitely an amazing lifesaving medical technology if used appropriately. Unfortunately there is a perverse incentive to have more ECMO patients as they can generate huge insurance bills. So, the hospital loves it if the patient attached to it has insurance (and hates it otherwise).
pcj-github··on Flutter: a Portable UI Framework for Mobile, Web, Embedded, and Desktop
Closure user here! 2019 and I still love it! Yes, it's verbose but easy to understand what's it's doing... My project compiles ~1000 js files down to ~300kb. Works great with bazel. No better type system for javascript IMHO. :)
