pboutros··on Nintendo is up 35% on Pokemon Go success
I bet it would be up even higher if Niantic (sp.?) and Nintendo had a formalized data sharing agreement. See HN discussion here:

pboutros··on History isn't a 'useless' major, it teaches critical thinking
How? It's the study and critique of ideologies, without a judgment of right / wrong.
pboutros··on History isn't a 'useless' major, it teaches critical thinking
That's an interesting perspective -- to clarify, do you just consider that any subjective judgment is derived from a set ideology?
pboutros··on Apple Fires Back at Spotify for Asking for 'Preferential Treatment'
Neither are being bad, but Spotify is clearly trying to force the issue around the App Store generally. Spotify is clearly at fault here (and the way it's been handled in the media suggests some machination, perhaps), but Apple's revenue model with App Store is just as good or bad as it has always been (or maybe better, now that there's the 85/15 split option).
pboutros··on Why you should aim for 100 rejections a year
That's a good question. I think it's probably by enjoying what you do - if you enjoy it and keep learning as you go, you'll probably get better.

Basically sounds like a way to get to the "10,000 hour rule".

pboutros··on Don't like Brexit? We have a plan
Nice job, Adrian Docea!
pboutros··on The Toronto Raptors are using IBM’s Watson in the draft
The use case outlined is solvable by a spreadsheet. IBM continues to put marketing first, product second.
pboutros··on TV Advertising
Good time to post my list of favorite xkcd cartoons:

pboutros··on Microsoft is the first big company to say it's serving the legal marijuana trade
Explains what was going on when they bought LinkedIn.

pboutros··on It’s cheaper to build multiple native applications than one responsive web app
The fact that you go to this effort is why I love HN.
pboutros··on Facebook is using smartphones to listen to what people say
Who keeps posting this? This gets debunked every single time.

pboutros··on Leaving the Nest
I hope they aren't - I'm american/lebanese as well, hence noticing.
pboutros··on Leaving the Nest
Is Marwan Fawaz also lebanese-american? Tony Fadell is, and Marwan's LinkedIn looks like he went to a high school in Lebanon. What are the odds!

pboutros··on Mary Meeker's 2016 Internet Trends Report [pdf]
Two points to keep in mind:

- It's a deck with 200+ slides, so it's going to probably have decent content in there somewhere.

- A document / paper would have been better for you, but you're not really the intended audience.

The whole idea behind these syndicated reports is to drive business to their firm either by being consumed by 'suits' who commission those reports, or by being cited in presentations delivered to other 'suits' who might go on to commission a report from them.

pboutros··on Why David Hume Is Popular Now
I would attribute the (mis)use of that word a little bit more to the author of the article, and a little bit less to 'centuries of philosophers' - many of whom were scientists.
pboutros··on Escaping the Local Minimum: Where AI Has Been and Where It Needs to Go
That was an incredible piece. What an interesting way of looking at it.

Matching it to Minsky's model really shows the limitations of current AI - but I'm going to read more about the validity of Minsky's model before setting any thoughts in stone.

Thanks for sharing that.

pboutros··on Person carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort found in U.S.
I don't know why, but the image of really cute little robots popped into my head. I would fund that - for the cuteness alone.
pboutros··on A.I. wins the Superfecta at the Kentucky Derby, turns $20 bet into $11k
When 'artificial intelligence' is the same thing as 'crowdsourcing and averaging'...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKNVwXU2rrI

This is misleading. It's just Wisdom of the Crowd stuff. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_of_the_crowd)

pboutros··on I’m Sorry
How is this not the first thought people had? Poor guy, with a lot of signs of mental instability. The amount of animosity people have had towards him on HN (and elsewhere) isn't tempered by how obviously imbalanced he is. I think it's because of the disproportionate amount of media attention he's received for something he didn't earn.
pboutros··on [dead]
Truly the type of content befitting HN.
pboutros··on If You Can't Smell Him, Can You Love Him?
I, for one, would fund this study, if only for the joy of knowing that it is occurring.
pboutros··on Ask HN: Most comprehensive CVE database?
This is really interesting - and extremely ambitious. Having played with the CVE database, I'd caution you that it was surprisingly difficult (for me) to parse. The content is mildly unstructured, so that would be one of the first things I would look to figure out before building the retrieval system for the affected code.
pboutros··on Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian will “appcast” the new Reddit app at 5pm PT
I'm assuming it's like Twitch, but for less interesting content.
pboutros··on A Deep Learning USB Stick
Betting on local instead of cloud is always an interesting gamble.

pboutros··on A New Map for America
Yes, of course. Representatives are assigned at 1 per ~700,000 ppl.
pboutros··on Y Combinator cofounder Jessica Livingston to take year-long sabbatical
Good for her! A sabbatical sounds great. And she's definitely earned it.
pboutros··on Revenue on Medium
The monetization strategy reveals itself! I'm always intrigued by subscriptions to individual content producers.
pboutros··on Taxi, Uber, and Lyft Usage in New York City
>Regulation never helps the end-consumers

The FDA, FDIC, and other acronyms would like to have a word with you.

pboutros··on Why smart people are better off with fewer friends
I've reread it 3-4 times, and I'm having a hard time understanding what the argument is. Typically, you'd expect something like

> if p, then q

> if q, then z

but this article reads as

> if p, then q

> if z, then m

Except that it's all wrapped in language - the ideas look like they should flow together, but they don't. There are probably missing steps in the analysis. Might be a case of over-summarization by the journalist.
