pbharrin··on The Real Silicon Valley
I love this sentence: "Normal people, who have normal jobs working for other people, can no longer relate to you, and you can’t relate to them." I wish I knew how to better deal with situations where I have to interact with people working normal jobs, it's very awkward.

pbharrin··on Parallella: A Supercomputer For Everyone is Dying
I think the market is telling these guys: We don't care about computing power. People are getting by with iPads and Chromebooks powered by ARM cores with 1/8 the computing power of an Intel processor. Don't get me wrong if you want to play around with parallel computing you should love this, and support it. Just don't be surprised when it doesn't reach Pebble funding levels.
pbharrin··on An Open Letter To Tony Hsieh (CEO of Zappos)
Sorry I'm late to this question. I wanted to answer this: "How do bootstrapped startups handle huge companies like Zappos?" From my experience, big companies like working with small vendors because they can push them around. That may sound negative but the larger company can ask for features and the small company will be happy to oblige. That is what I have seen and heard in my own time.

Also in my experience it has been a waste of time to think about scaling. Big companies do not simply look at your website and tell the lackey engineer to integrate your product into their production product and pray for it to work. There are going to be many phases of adoption which your ability to scale will be tested.

Scaling is a nice problem to have, worry about making something people want first.

pbharrin··on Nathan Myhrvold's Cunning Plan to Prevent 3-D Printer Piracy
This article title is totally incorrect it misses a layer of logic. A better title would be: "Nathan Myhrvold's Cunning Plan to get royalties from 3D printer DRM software". Nathan Myhrvold was issued a patent on 3D printer DRM software, good it will put a barrier in place for anyone wishing to make DRM software which fights piracy, so actually Nathan Myhrvold is helping 3D printer piracy.

pbharrin··on Does Apple have a Scott Forstall problem?
Totally agree. I know, from many sources that a lot of human labor goes into making the Google data so good. They used to give out cookies to employees who would filter search results as porn/not porn. Algos can only get you so far.

pbharrin··on Does everyone hate MongoDB?
YES!!!! We stopped using it in production and moved to Solr.

I don't hate MongoDB but I think it is overhyped. The fact that 10gen raised 42m is crazy. I would be surprised if those investors got any return greater than the money they invested.

pbharrin··on Startup = Growth
An estimate of your sales pipeline isn't proof you have traction, it's an estimate: not worth very much.
pbharrin··on 3D printer community revolting against Makerbot's new closed-source printer
As someone who contributes OSHW derivatives, it feels really shitty to have a company go from very open (Makerbot in 2009) to very closed (Makerbot in 2012). Contrast this with Google Wave, originally closed, then they opened it.

The same thing is true with pricing a product: it's very difficult to raise prices, while it's very easy to lower them.

pbharrin··on 3D printer community revolting against Makerbot's new closed-source printer
It's funny, Makerbot actually took the MK7 extruder design from a Chinese 3D printer (UP!). I'm not saying that what the guy did with the kickstarter campaign was right, just don't be fooled into thinking Makerbot invented everything.

pbharrin··on Memristors' one-year delay will hit IT in the wallet
I do not have enough information to say what exactly is the problem with HP's memristor. The axiom of technology development in NVM is:

"The technology of the future will always be the technology of the future."

Just like cold fusion has been 5 years out for a long time. I know that is cynical, but the truth is flash keeps scaling and the new technologies are not cost effective compared with silicon flash.

evolution > revolution

The second link did a good job of summarizing the technologies that existing companies are pursuing. Most of these companies would like to have a two terminal element (resistor) over a three terminal element (transistor) if they could. It requires less space. When one of them finds a way to make it cheaper than flash you will see it on the market.

pbharrin··on Memristors' one-year delay will hit IT in the wallet
This is a stupid article. The author makes the assumption that HP and Hynix COULD ramp to high volume production, however it is clear from HP's statement that this is not true:

"As with many other ground-breaking technologies being developed at HP Labs, HP has not yet committed to a specific product roadmap for memristor-based products,"

Let me also say that I worked in the non-volatile memory business for seven years. Any organization that can scale better than its competitors will do so, unless they don't like making money. End of story. If HP and Hynix are not ramping to high volume, it's because they are not ready, not some stupid conspiracy theory that they want to stagnate the development of cloud-buzzword "technology".

pbharrin··on HP Memristors Will Reinvent Computer Memory "by 2014"
“Development costs at least 10 times as much as research, and commercialization costs 10 times as much as development. So in the end, research — which we think is the most important part — is only 1 percent of the effort.”

This just means that it's easy to get something working in a lab but it's hard to make a product that you can mass produce. In non-voitile memory a flash replacement is always 2 years out, just like cold fusion is always 10 years out.

pbharrin··on Tindie: Buy & sell homemade gadgets & parts
Tindie is a marketplace: many-to-many. 4pcb.com is not a marketplace it's a manufacturing service. Shapeways is a both a marketplace and a manufacturing service. The beautiful thing about their marketplace is that they also provide the manufacturing (3D printing). So as a seller all I have to do is provide the 3D model STL file and people who buy the product get a physical object. It would be awesome if Tindie did the same thing with PCBs. Currently I don't know of any PCB marketplaces that provide manufacturing as part of their offering. Sparkfun will sell products for you but there are minimum orders, and I believe you have to purchase all the raw materials ahead of time. It would be awesome to have an appstore for PCBs. If you make one, email me and I will be an evangelist customer.
pbharrin··on Tindie: Buy & sell homemade gadgets & parts
It would be 1000% more awesome if they handled board fabrication and stuffing for the sellers, ie they became "Shapeways for electronics". Perhaps they can team up with DorkbotPDX to get low quantity boards made.

Google's ads are better because you have intention when you are searching. That's not true when you are checking into Facebook to see what other people are doing. Are there other times when people use Facebook and they have some intent? Planning an event, or asking a question, those come to mind.
