paulpauper··on The turbulent AI era is here
The funny thing is that the wealthy and powerful don't realise that a collapse of that scale means that every switches to professional guillotine builder over night.

Even during the Great Depression ,a period of record wealth inequality and much worse economic conditions, this did not happen.

paulpauper··on 'This is crazy. This is insane': Bill Gates has changed his mind about AI, jobs
“I am in a state of shock that I’m sort of the first one saying, ‘This is crazy. This is insane,’” he said. “I’m just deafened by the silence.”

And yet by every economic metric, the awaited or inevitable "AI job crisis" has not happened, or even any sign of it. Also, large swath of jobs, like service sector, blue collar, etc.--cannot be automated by just computers. I have no idea why people keep taking these overrated experts seriously. Even his Pandemic warning was vague. yes, pandemics will happen; this is a historical statistical fact 0ing back since the dawn of humans. Him warning it in a book is not new unless he could pinpoint where and when, which he didn't.

paulpauper··on Randy Pausch's Last Lecture (2007) [video]
I remember reading his blog. It almost looked like he could beat it. He had full surgery--the Whipple procedure. But the recurrence killed him soon after.
paulpauper··on Wall Street Journal defends billionaire's use of AI to write op-ed
It's obvious reading it that it was produced by AI. Phrases like, "Treasury's announcement gave the game away," which is also a sentence fragment, so the AI fails at even basic grammar (and shame on the WSJ editor for not noticing this too).

The irony is that although LLMs are trained on human writings, the output is conspicuously un-human. It's like after 4+ years and billions of dollars invested on SOTA models, AI is still incapable of producing natural-sounding writing. This should not be that hard, yet it is.

paulpauper··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
huge surge of homeless camps, people going on various disability programs, job loss and ppl not returning to labor force. it's possible for the US to be collectivity wealthier yet a lot of people poorer.

In other tests conducted when he was 41 years old, his brain reportedly “resembled that of a 33-year-old”. He also laughs a lot.

This is an utterly meaningless statistic. The fact the media keeps pushing dubious science, leads to people being swindled in the pursuit of miracle cures based on equally dubious science.

yeah it's like the AOL business model where people just keep the sub running and don't cancel.
paulpauper··on Dolly Parton has died
some people are really sick but it's not evident because they keep it concealed
paulpauper··on A Message from the Family of Dolly Parton

paulpauper··on Anthropic Sees over $30T in Potential Revenue
I remember how 3 years ago the consensus, even here, was it was a fad or unsustainable.

damn what an impressive side biz..520 paying Patreons for a site that updates basically once a year . An average of $10 means $5k/month. Even Gwern only has 1000 patrons, but they are not all paying and the subscription range is much smaller..
paulpauper··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
And then we'll brand anyone who dares to go to the bathroom a sex offender or other huge penalties. That is the paradox of a country that is so wealthy yet low trust. Public infrastructure is the first to go unless legally mandated( sufficient public bathrooms does not fall under this apparently).
paulpauper··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Homelessness and the post-2008 wave of poverty ruined it. A few people who need to use a public bathroom everyday is fine, but when you have 100x of ppl who are desuetude, on drugs, mentally ill etc. emptying their medications and needles and so on it becomes a public health hazard, attracts crime, and overwhelms staff. Better to just shut it down altogether or limit to staff only. .
paulpauper··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
drug users ruin everything. it's why we cant have nice things anymore
paulpauper··on Claude reaching limits quickly then ever
Anthropic has been running at a loss for a long time to build its growth and userbase. As IPO approaches, expect more restrictions to please Wall Street. There was a sort of arbitrage where you could use AI for everything , as it was much cheater than employees, but this is closing due to huge restrictions and costs.
paulpauper··on Chinese robot runs 100M sprint quicker than Usain Bolt's world record
What people find impressive or interesting is subjective, I guess.
paulpauper··on Chinese robot runs 100M sprint quicker than Usain Bolt's world record
yea people will look for any reason to disagree. It's right in the article.
paulpauper··on MIT requires every student to know how to swim. But why?
I think the requirement was a matter practical concern back in the 30-50s when there was war and it was assumed that knowing how to swim would be useful , such as on a ship. naval engineering was a huge deal in the 19th and up to the mid 20th century. It seems arbitrary to require it, but it also makes sense in the historical context.
paulpauper··on Chinese robot runs 100M sprint quicker than Usain Bolt's world record
a bullet is faster than any car. the point is, it's a humanoid type robot, not just a faster vehicle.

paulpauper··on Artificial Intelligence Policy
Banning Ai outside of the classroom is impossible, like telling students they cannot use google for take-home tests. Students will always find ways to circumvent these restrictions.

This is consistent with the Terman study. The large majority of subjects had productive careers and lives for the follow-up.
paulpauper··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Just visiting this site means you're inundated with a lot of news about AI or tech companies, and politics pertaining to those matters. It's hard to remove politics from issues. I think only the most niche of communities avoid politics completely.

paulpauper··on Trump's Justice Dept. Targets Smaller Fraud Cases
The new emphasis on small-dollar fraud comes as the administration has issued pardons and commutations to white-collar convicts, pulled back from pursuing criminal cases against multinational corporations and dropped high-profile charges against wealthy executives.

Not to defend Trump specifically, but ALL presidents have pardoned white-collar criminals. Excluding Jan 6th blanket pardon, some may be surprised to learn trump has issued the fewest pardons of any president. Getting a pardon from Trump is actually quite hard

paulpauper··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Warren Buffett spoke several times about this, saying that he’d much rather deal with a person of middling IQ and some humility rather than a person with very high IQ but not as smart as they think.

I'm pretty sure he never said that. He has become like Einstein, where people have projected their beliefs onto him.
