paulintrognon··on Introducing Firefox Monitor, Helping People Take Control After a Data Breach
FYI, http://monitor.firefox.com/ does not seem to work. https://monitor.firefox.com/ does work.
paulintrognon··on JavaScript Equality Minesweeper
That's weird, I would thought that if(value) was the equivalent of if(value == true). Learned something today!

functions will not be any line longer by writing ranks instead of rks, but it will greatly improve readability.

You can have the exact same code wihtout abbreviations, and I can assure you that it will still be 2-3 pages long, with very short functions.

paulintrognon··on How true hackers write JavaScript
I believe there is a difference between gold-standard perfect code and just making "beginners mistakes".

It costs almost nothing more to write "event" instead of "ev" or "removeElement" instead of "remEl", but it makes the code much more readable. You might gain 1s for writting remEl instead of removeElement but you will loose more seconds in the future trying to remember what remEl stands for, or having to check what abbreviation you chose for that function.

It's just something programmers learn with experience (even when working alone) : abbreviations are a false good idea, and people are just pointing that out.

hidestory() is not even used anywhere ; why is it here for? Debugging?
paulintrognon··on Ask HN: What do you struggle with?
I feel that I live in a lie: the lie that we can keep on living with such high standarts without destroying our planet (our more exaclty, our future selves). I feel like we have to change radically the way we live to fight climate change and all coming ecological disasters... Yet I don't do anything, because it is to hard to give up all the comfort modern life can buy... But I know it will have to end one day...
paulintrognon··on Americans Own Less Stuff, and That’s Reason to Be Nervous
Interesting, but in your example how would the food be delivered to your home? But maybe a delivery service once a week or so is better than every individual taking their car to the supermarket? Interesting topic anyway.
paulintrognon··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
I am genuinely interested: why so many and how can you handle 400 open tabs?? How do you navigate between them? I am lost as soon as I have more than 10 tabs open at the same time...
paulintrognon··on Ask HN: Are there still developpers using non-Apple laptops, and why?
Why are you moving away from Apple's ecosystem?
paulintrognon··on The environmental impact of technology devices is getting worse
I understand what you say, and I agree for the most part, but it really seems impossible that a two-hour car journey emits more than manufacturing a smartphone...

I mean, building a smartphone involves digging for raw materials, extract them, transport them, assemble them, etc. And i'm not counting the emission during the design process.

I know that a two-hour car journey is really not optimized, and that manufacturing phones on a large scale is very optimized, but it seems impossible to me that manufacturing a phone in China from components from all over the world emits less that a good big steak in a restaurant... I that's true, that's incredible.

paulintrognon··on The environmental impact of technology devices is getting worse
But manufacturing a smartphone involves a lot of transportation and electricity, doesn't it?

Our focus should also be on cutting energy spendings & reducing transportation, and stop buying new phones (and laptops and tvs etc..) every now and then sure will help, will it not?

paulintrognon··on Hyper 2, Electron based terminal
It's not because it exists that you should use it. If you don't like it, don't use it, and it won't take any battery usage on your phone

I personnaly think a terminal based on web technologies is not something I would use, but if people are happy to use it, as soon as they are aware of the tradeoffs, why not?

paulintrognon··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
But those can be recycled, can't they?

paulintrognon··on Paradise Papers: Dear Tim Cook
I think he is talking about the big impact large companies have on climate change (due to products and product parts transportation), for example. Also the fact that a lot of phone's components are made from minerals that fuel conflicts in third world countries. A small company like FairPhone, which tries to combat that, can't evade taxes like Apple do...
paulintrognon··on CRISPR 2.0 Is Here, and It’s More Precise

paulintrognon··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
> The alternative for most of those people is dying of famine and extreme poverty. Nobody is forcing them to work in those factories

So if I read you well, you are saying that it's either they die of hunger, either they work in those factories. That sounds a bit like a false choice, of course they are forced to work in those factories, otherwise they die!

The government of China is getting billions of $ because west firms make chinese people work for almost nothing. So chinese gov. isn't going to change anything, it's going so well for them that way. So the west firm are in fact encouraging those very poor conditions of work, they are NOT improving the living of those people.

paulintrognon··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
It has not benefitted people outside developed country either. People are being exploited in mines of africa, in factories in asia (look at the textile industry or high tech)...
paulintrognon··on Mozilla stops distribution of WOT addon
It is a shame that Mozilla did not explain why they removed the addon on the addon page, instead we just find a boring 404 page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wot-safe-brow...

They could have taken the opportunity to show that they care about user privacy and denounce WoT at the same time

Source? I am not sure this is true. I am not sure you can prove people today are happier than people yesterday.
paulintrognon··on Linux can’t be installed on a recent Lenovo laptop
I was talking about the last post, sorry if that wasn't clear. My point was, if other people have the same problem and find the thread, they will not read 19 pages and rather go to the last one to see where's the issue at. And there they will find nothing that answers their question. Lenovo staff could have at least have said "it is a known issue" / "it is a driver issue" / "We have an agreement with Microsoft"... Whatever the reason is.
paulintrognon··on Linux can’t be installed on a recent Lenovo laptop
The Lenovo guy did not say it was a secret. And it's not posted in a lost forum somewhere, but in response to a review on a very popular sites on which Lenovo sells a lot. Seems legit to me.
paulintrognon··on Linux can’t be installed on a recent Lenovo laptop
The worst part is the reaction from Lenovo in my opinion. They just locked the thread reporting the issue on their forum, not saying anything about the problem itself but instead threatened the community to turn the pre-approval option on. This really makes me angry and makes me want to boycott their products. I really hope this issue will spread so that Lenovo learn that they made a bad move on this one.

It also made me realize how important it is to have a community on which one can rely to spread problems like this one. Several people on their own can't do much against big companies, but a big tech commnity can.
