paulgrimes1··on How Do You Know a Developer Is Doing a Good Job?
Bingo. Well said
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: Startup running out of money, shall I leave?
Unless you're a founder, I'd leave if I were you. You have a responsibility to your family to do the best by them. Good luck!
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: Startup running out of money, shall I leave?
Surely equity is meaningless if the ship is sinking?
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: Is this normal VC behavior?
Take your code and walk.
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: Is this normal VC behavior?
Do you have any contracts/legally binding agreements in place with him?

If not, take the code and walk.

If so, hit up a lawyer about exiting the agreements - there are circumstances where you can regain control of the code (and company) based on his lack of due care to sufficiently promote the product as part of his role within the agreement.

paulgrimes1··on How PHP will Fare in 2017?
Pretty elitist. Also slightly outdated.
paulgrimes1··on Uber Freight
Interesting. How will they regulate shipping illegal goods? Moving people and food is fine, but this adds a layer of grey to the already blurry line uber are skirting.
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: What web framework do you use? Why did you choose it?
I was thinking the same!
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: What have you achieved in 2016?
(Sorry, just saw this now) Cheers! Will do.
paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: Hiring freelancer to build app?
Find someone local to you and commission them to build it to your brief. Sure, it costs more than it would if you commissioned a remote developer to do it, but the savings in communication overhead and collaboration easily offsets this. Also, you'll contribute to your local economy and build a relationship with a trusted dev partner.

I own and run a web development company in Melbourne, Australia, and always advise potential remote clients that they're better off doing this to begin, until they are very confident in properly briefing and communicating to remote developers.

Godspeed!

paulgrimes1··on Ask HN: What have you achieved in 2016?
Burned out of a developer/manager role at a web agency here in Melbourne, Australia. Took 3 months off with no income and exclusively read books that inspired me. Started a development company of my own with no money. Got enough work to employ a junior dev and mentor her up to (close to) mid level. Six months later, we're in a local shared space working on some fun projects, with enough cashflow to begin work on our own product, with a rule that we don't work more than 38 hours a week.

I count myself lucky.

paulgrimes1··on Introducing Private Packagist – Composer Package Archive as a Service for PHP
Good idea, bit pricey for just a speed pop though..
paulgrimes1··on Don't Give Up on the Guitar, Fender Is Begging You
Most beginners (quitters?) don't receive fenders for their first guitar. If they do, the gifter is obviously LOOOADED.

paulgrimes1··on PHP the Wrong Way
If every project had unlimited budget and only quality developers, this site would be a little bible. The reality is much different - communities exist so we can stand on the shoulders of our peers :)
paulgrimes1··on PHP the Wrong Way
This reads to me as a parent saying to a kid (me) "Well, you could stick your hand in the fire, but.."
paulgrimes1··on Acorn and Amstrad
Our first computer was an Amstrad CPC464. A cousin dropped a jam sandwich onto it and the E key became terminally stuck down, rendering the entire thing impossible to use. As a fledgling nerd, I was devastated. Devastated!
paulgrimes1··on [dead]
This reminds me of the HR person complaining that "40% of sick days taken are Mondays and Fridays", blissfully unaware that 40% of all work days are indeed Mondays and Fridays
paulgrimes1··on [dead]
..you could just ask them, rather than waiting for your ISP to tell you "to stop hacking" - hilar
paulgrimes1··on Brexit wins. An illusion dies
Ireland's already independent.. Just perhaps not all of her ;)

The sad thing about the possibility of a real debate is that those proposing the unification still have literal blood on their hands. The conversation morphs from those proposing unification to being about those proposing the idea, and how they've been involved in horrific violence not-so-many years ago. The point of the debate is lost in the mire from that point on.

I believe it'll take a generation removed of the troubles to be capable of grasping the possibility. But I would LOVE to be proved wrong!

paulgrimes1··on Brexit wins. An illusion dies
I recall having very heated disagreements with a friend years ago; she believed Ireland would unite in our lifetime, I believed the idea itself was too young for anyone to take seriously. Maybe this is the catalyst needed to advance the conversation.

A United Ireland in our lifetime would be heart-explodingly amazing; however just as the UK voted Leave, Northern Ireland could well vote Stay.

paulgrimes1··on Brexit wins. An illusion dies
I'm from Ireland. The potential reinstating of "the border" in the north of Ireland, effectively rebuilding a physical wall based on the outcome of this brexit, is a concern. The psychological effect it will have on Ireland as a people will be tectonic.
paulgrimes1··on PHP Sucks
PHP is a see-saw at a kids' playground; on one end there's a small, sensibly dressed kid and on the other, an overweight kid having a great time, with his/her side stuck firmly to the ground.

The child suspended in the air is wailing about how the whole playground is being totally ruined by the other kid.

The other children watch, bemused, from the other playground equipment, happy that they've grown out of the seesaw; all the parents watch from outside the playground, not caring who plays with what.

I'm overweight and enjoy seesaws. Yay!
