paule89··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an alternative to a password manager?
I am at the moment also trying out password managers and searching for the best one. Lastpass so far has the best features, great password generation. But on Android it lacks a good and decent integration in finding and selecting the correct password for an app. Seriously bad. 1Password is better in this regard, but you can not swipe the 1password "click here to fill out with 1password" away. So also definetly a dealbreaker. But 1password is great at only showing the correct password for your app, after selecting it once.

Regarding the user interface don't get me started on keepass. It was recently forked into keepassxc but the chromeipass/ foxipass integration does not work all the time. Also love it if a website just shows your username already and you have to fill out the password and can't use hotkeys. (I am looking at you google) Lastpass can do it successfully, but keepass...

The Android interface was last tested a few years ago by me and it only had a notification area you had to always show. I don't know if it is much better at the moment.

Regarding your password security: Lastpass itself encrypts your passwords and hashes them thousand times. You can also manually adjust the hashrate to even more. So even if lastpass would get cracked. You would have to try out every possible hashing number with every possible password combination. So thats a plus. Well compromising your pc and installing root would be your least concern. It would be easier to steal your phone, get your fingerprint and unlock your database this way.

You can never be 100% secure. But have to choose your best way of doing it.

Also i am open to suggestion regarding a great password manager for android. Will have to try out keepass and dashlane again.

paule89··on Adrenalin driver breaks Command & Conquer games
Wow. That is kind of bad. I love to play older games regularly, and had high hopes, because amd provides more and more linux support. But this is kind of a dealbreaker for me. Just wait what happens if reddit and the news get wind of this. i mean it will not be EA kind of bad, but it will surely be bad.

only if the reply is and will be the official position.

paule89··on Net Neutrality Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal Was Written by Comcast Attorney
Is it just my techbubble, but how can such a law come through, if the general public opposes it so much? I mean how corrupt or ignorant have you to be to not notice this.
paule89··on Fish: A user-friendly command line shell for macOS, Linux, etc
the main feature i use fish for is the syntax expansion, and history usage of it. The biggest gripe i have with it is the specific syntax. If fish would act more like a bash shell in case of syntax. ( i know i would need a totally different shell). But it could replace the fish for me in an instant. everywhere. Anyways. Thanks for the fish.
paule89··on RSS: there's nothing better
I love RSS/ATOM. The only problem i have is with sites, that don't let me see the complete content inside feedly and i have to open the site in an extra new tab. Would love some suggestions for this. (other feedgraber, self hosted,...)

paule89··on How Seattle Got More People to Ride the Bus
Well. If people start to invest into public Infrastructure and Busses, Trams, trains. The quality will increase and more people will use it. The same thing with dedicated bike lanes. Not for every scenario. But it helps the people. The low and middle class and that is the best we can do. Help those who don't have the money.
paule89··on FZF and RipGrep – Navigate with bash faster than ever before
The second post i read today about fzf. And also again i see ripgrep. I think it is time to make these tools a default in linux distros. Maybe a small you could use ripgrep instead of grep, just before the first use of these tools would be interesting.
paule89··on Mastodon 2.0
So as far as my simple mind understands, mastodon is a Twitter alternative. But without the adds, true timeconsistent Timeline, without annoying have you seen this tweet yet algorithms and simply working.

But the problem is that it is a social network, that depends on your social network and its embrace of mastodon.

Am i right?

paule89··on Plain emails not only save time but work better (2016)
I really like plain emails. Often times you have to allow pictures in your email client to load. Be it in the mobile app, you havend received yet a mail from them or you had to reinstall lineageos/custom rom for the X. time this month. So using just plain mail sounds great.

I also like the idea of plain mails minimizing the memory footprint.

paule89··on Keybase launches encrypted Git

paule89··on Taking a cigarette break on the smoking internet
I kinda understand what it must feel like to have the urge to just smoke a cigarette. And also the social circle which together takes a 10 minute break can be creative.

But for me as a non smoker it is so often annoying. Going to University and often is somebody walking in front of me smoking and I walking directly into it, with no way to avoid it. Waiting for the train and the smoke blows into my direction. I am glad that vaping is getting more and more established. No annoying smell for me. And yes I may be downvoted into Oblivion. But for non smokers the smell is just disgusting.

So I am still greatful for smoking areas. Because it contains the smoke to certain parts of the building which I can avoid.

paule89··on Ask HN: How do you deal with piracy?
Game Dev Tycoon had a nice anti piracy measure. They themselves uploaded a cracked version of the game. In the end you went bankrupt as game developer, because people pirated your games. So the game was broken for those that did not buy it. Also it kindly asked you to just buy the game.

paule89··on [dead]
What a fraud of an article. Comparing the wind energy, which is mostly used just for electricity, with oil wood and gas. Is like comparing the percentage of people using a boat daily with those using a car. It just isn't the correct metric.

paule89··on Text Editor Performance Comparison
I like atom just because of the easy plugin management. But it is slow as hell. Would love to use vim or emacs, but I don't want to invest too much time into learning one system. Would want to learn the better one. Too bad notepad++ only runs under wine.
paule89··on Ask HN: What's stopping you from using Firefox as your primary browser?
But it still doesn't work as great as in Chrome. Ok. Sometimes even in Chrome it doesn't work perfect, but the ease of use to just search for a youtube video ist great. Also the mobile browser worked better 2 years ago. Now i haven't tested it lately.
paule89··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?

paule89··on What Happens When You Install the Top Download.com Apps
Could remove all of this malware with Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Buz still had zo reset the proxy settings, because they had been changed. The change was also removed but i had to unclick a checkbox so it doesn't use a proxy anymore. It is so frustrating. I don't know if Windows can sustain it's software model like this. It is just unbearable. Ninite and chocolatey would be great solutions i think.
