paule89··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
Samsung only had used a gpl version of exfat (mainly for android) and was forced to open source it, (or someone just did, although they did not want to admit it was gpl). This lead to development of a fuse module for linux. Which can be installed. I myself never had luck using it.
paule89··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
You had to add it as a fuse module. I don't know if a user compiled kernel module worked. But still even if it was used as a fuse module i myself had often times problems with it. So i hope this goes away soon.
paule89··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
Also hope that uefi will soon use exfat. Still better than plain old fat.
paule89··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
The only Good Thing about German Internet access is the FRITZ!Box. Best basic Internet Router with minimal required setup. Still missing some things, but they do their job much better than what any provider can give you (or they are rebranding the FRITZ!Box itself)
paule89··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
Sorry but your setup seems to be outragouesly unique. Often times you have either cable or dsl. But not both. Also what about your upload speeds? probably only 20MBit/s or 40 max.

I dream of a land with 10Gbit symmatrical networking for an affordable price. It would be future proof. I could role my own server. Heck i could probably start a cloud business and scale up if i wanted to somehow by buying more fiber lines.

paule89··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
It is so bad that one German Minister does not take a call anymore, if he is driving on the Autobahn. Because it would be too embarassing to redial again and again because the call will drop. Not might. It will!
paule89··on Germans Grow Frustrated with Their Slow-Poke Internet
Well german telecom tried to introduce caps into internet plans ~5 years ago at around 200GB. But that caused so much outrage, that they rolled back on that decision and ultimately you only get a cap on the cheapest of providers. I mean try downloading GTA5 and Red Dead Redemption for PS4/PC, and you have already used up your datacap.

Mobile Plans are so expensive, because we germans auction away the licenses for the Frequencies for billions.

paule89··on The Raspberry Pi 4 needs a fan
I would love to have a case for the Pi which can utilise a normal Desktop Tower Cooler. Be it 80, 120mm size coolers. The larger the cooler the quieter it can be. (Looking at some nice Noctua fans) Alternatively the seedstudio one looks good but how loud is it really? https://www.seeedstudio.com/ICE-Tower-CPU-Cooling-Fan-for-Ra...
paule89··on Make Linux Fast Again
Well would also love more explanation, but it kind of seems enough
paule89··on Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community
I never even heard of Savannah. And after seeing the website i am glad they will be on github soon.
paule89··on Apache Software Foundation joins GitHub open source community
So the "Open Apache Graveyard" is moving to github, for better visibility, interaction, and where the users are.

Thats a good move. Although most of the software from the "Open Apache Graveyard" like OpenOffice and others is kinda dead already.

Just my very biased IMHO.

paule89··on Opening up BBC Sounds to others’ podcasts and commercial radio
As long as there is only 1 or 2 platforms, which you have to choose and pay for. If there are too many fish in the see and you have to pay for all of them, people will pay for none of them.
paule89··on Opening up BBC Sounds to others’ podcasts and commercial radio
Ouch. The comments really hurt to read. I understand the frustration.

The only thing i really need of a podcast is an rss feed. Why make it complicated .

paule89··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
The question even is if i can vote for the pirates in my region. So far i haven't even seen the slightest bit of voting information for the upcoming vote.

Well nearly no information. I had a flyer for the SPD Senior Citizen Group in my mailbox...

paule89··on Europe’s controversial overhaul of online copyright receives final approval
Where do i find who voted how, so i don't vote them during the EU Vote in May?
paule89··on European Parliament approves copyright reform
Are we able to see, who voted how? I would like to have a website showing you which persons not to vote, in your location for the upcoming eu votes in may.
paule89··on Google is reportedly shutting down its in-house VR film studio
VR is in its infancy for over 30 years now. It is just not really good.
paule89··on Redesigning GitHub Repository Page
I like it a lot.
paule89··on Pandoc
everytime I see a project using google groups, i think it is already dead. Gladly yours seems to be used quite often. At least you can search it even years later, compared to an irc or slack channel.
paule89··on Pocket Casts acquired by NPR
I did use antennapod and compared it to pocketcasts. Antennapod provided chapter support much earlier and for more file formats. But the main feature of PocketCasts is that the server syncs the feeds for you. The app instantly knows if something new arrives, but you download from the normal servers like in antennapod. Overall what antennapod lacked is the dedicated focus on quality which PocketCasts provides. It just always worked. Always. Antennapod crashed for me. Often times. And I am on the PocketCasts beta and nothing is amiss. On antennapod beta should be called an alpha, and even the normal client has its problems. The UI ux is also much worse. U intuitive. A few sprinkles of color would also be great and make it easier to navigate and set everything up. So yeah. Definitely PocketCasts. I would also love to use the desktop/browser version but the paid subscription for it wasn't even worth it for me. My smartphone is enough for that. And also it is a paid app. Support all the devs. Best 5 bucks spend on a podcatcher yet.
paule89··on Latex-mimosis: A minimal and modern template for your thesis
I like it this way. My bachelor thesis also had no real guidelines. I frankendopted a thesis template from the Oxford University. It was ok. The biggest problem was it had already used too many latex options, so that I had to go through everything and disable what I did not understand and then make it look good again just to adjust a few settings. But else it was ok. So a new minimalist version is the perfect starting point.
paule89··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
I read about the new Raspberry Pi Zero here first. And was able to buy it directly, to receive the first batch and had not to wait 2 months before the next batch was available.
paule89··on TDLib – Build Your Own Telegram Client
In my opinion your top priority should be to make every message e2e encrypted between sender and recipient. Else your idea is just as useless as telegram
paule89··on Podcasters are seeing encouraging numbers
What I really find interesting. The really big podcasts in Germany are all ad free. Maybe patreon maybe donations via sepa bank transfer but no ads at all. There are exceptions yes. And that is ok. But what I find worse are platforms which try to hog the listeners to themselves. Spotify or Google play music podcast. The joy of using podcasts is the same as the internet you just need a podcatcher instead of a browser and can listen to anything you want anywhere anywhen. And also with apps with great user interfaces. How come someone would even want to listen to Spotify podcasts without 30 second skips, chapter marks and most importantly resumable playback where you stopped.
paule89··on Podcasters are seeing encouraging numbers
Am I the only one that thinks more ads in podcasts are a bad thing? I am the 10 percent that skip ads. But more ads will force users to act soon
paule89··on Jitsi: Open-Source Video Conferencing
I think it is an important point that it is still using java. Java once the hero of portability is in my opionion just the hero of zero days and slow programs.

It also would not be the software to install on my grandmas pc because of the many important java updates which are needed. The automatic installation of a browser plugin i don't need and which makes it even more vulnerable.

I think if Android would not be using Java it would have died years ago.

On the other hand. Jitsi still great software. Open source and all.

paule89··on Free static websites with SSL for hackers
If i read free i mean free as in everything, but it seems you already need to have your own custom domain name. Meaning your own domain. Or did i miss something?
paule89··on New Keepass release
Still no native Browser Integration(without plugins). Still no native favicon downloading (without plugins). But it uses ChaCha20, and Argon2 (compared to keepassxc). But keepass2Android can also utilise both these algorithms.

And would still love to see it in github instead of sourceforge. But this is just my preference

paule89··on Signal partners with Microsoft to bring end-to-end encryption to Skype
The thing is. How will Microsoft and Skype handle backdoors now. As far as I understood the reason Microsoft broke Skype so badly was because they used centralised servers with backdoors for countries who wanted them. Not always the good countries.

But this. This baffles me. Deeply.

paule89··on Texttop – An interactive X Linux desktop rendered in TTY and streamable over SSH
Wow. I definitely like the Idea.

After reading the first few paragraphs i also finally understand why it would be such a great idea to have a blocky firefox.
