paulddraper··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
> If you are building for yourself instead of buying from someone else, you haven’t unlocked any value in the economic sense.

The articles says "AI needs $6T in annual revenue."

That is definitely adding to the annual revenue figure.

Yeah, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

"Yesterday you gave me 10 Frooby Bucks and charged 2 Frooby Bucks per banana. Now you gave me 5 Frooby Bucks and charge me 1 per banana!"

Deepseek isn't as good as Kimi, let alone the frontier models.

It's a very noticeable hit. It's like programming with mid-2025-era models: ignored instructions, dead code, mistakes.

It works...but anyone going from Sol to Deepseek is going to have a rough transition.

paulddraper··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
They have 2x the number of apps as Apple.

Millions and millions.

The cost of false rejections is generally quite low.

paulddraper··on Footguns with Postgres “at time zone 'UTC'”
A java.time.ZonedDateTime is not simply zoneid+date+time.

It has the zone offset and so is completely unambiguous and invariable.

  private final LocalDateTime dateTime;
  private final ZoneOffset offset;
  private final ZoneId zone;
Converting Instant+ZoneId into a ZonedDateTime can vary when zone rules change. The inverse does not.
paulddraper··on Footguns with Postgres “at time zone 'UTC'”
TLDR Always use timestamptz (timestamp with time zone).

Only use timestamp (timestamp without time zone) if you really need local/plain datetime.

(Ideally, timestamptz would be called timestamp/instant, and timestamp would be called datetime.)

paulddraper··on The Normalization of Inexplicable Failures
I’ve had banking transactions fail a number of times for unknowable or ill-defined reasons. One just last week in fact.

So that is a strange choice for repeatable, understandable operations. Might as well use Jev.

And now you can put a case on and cover it all up anyway.

paulddraper··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
The article only cites language for surveillance.

The other stuff...there's zero citations or quotes. Meaning that OpenAI could be having their cake and eating it too, winning a public victory, with no validation on the actual language, consequences, or enforcement.

paulddraper··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Were they the same restrictions though?

OpenAI just said no surveillance of U.S. persons.

Anthropic could have gone further; I think it's likely they did.

paulddraper··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
In recent history:

* removed filibuster for lower-court nominations ("nuclear option")

* impeached the president twice in a term

* tried that former president in the Senate after his term ended

* expanded mail-in voting en masse

* repeatedly attempted to eliminate 60-vote rule for legislation

I'm not claiming these were illegal, I'm just saying the process adapts to the needs.

paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
I've literally never seen that.

Unless it was in a very specific investment/exit/valuation related sense.

YC is an investor that turns money into more money, and claims to be good at that. It doesn't claim to be good at anything else.

paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
It's like people have never been to a city council meeting or know how they or their schedules operate.
paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
I feel like you may be intentionally dense, but in case you aren't.

Someone can have more than enough time and energy for a task, but prefer to do other tasks as well.

paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
While the discussions on council actions are accessible to the public, they have specific topics.

You can't just walk up and start promoting your coffee bar, or complain about how loud the neighbor’s dog are.

You can speak out about all those things -- the First Amendment protects that -- but not at whatever public city council meeting you want.

paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
The time was for speaking about building development codes.

Contrary to what some seem to believe, public discussions are not open-mic night.

paulddraper··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
Imminent threats of violence are not covered by the First Amendment.

Peaceful gatherings are covered.

Have you not heard similar from parents/teachers/chaperons?

"I will take as long as I need, to get you to comply. Your resistance doesn't make this go away, it just prolongs the inevitable."

paulddraper··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
Yes, you could develop a client-side (JavaScript) application to do this.

SAML does not require JavaScript to do that.

paulddraper··on SAML: A fractal of bad design
ODIC cannot operate with a private-network IdP.

SAML can.

In general, SAML is complicated because (1) auth is complicated (2) XML is complicated (3) canonicalization/signatures are complicated.

Some of those are unforced errors, some are historical facts.

paulddraper··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?
If you’re doing traditional on-site interviews, you’re already asking for multiple days (unless they live nearby).

It can be a challenge sometimes, but not as often as you might think.

I’m sure there are heavy-handed employment contracts that prohibit side work, but hasn’t been a problem in practice.

paulddraper··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?
Same as for other contractors.

Yes, there is friction, but if you do it enough, it gets reasonably small.

paulddraper··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
It's a SPA (see the example cards/pages).

So technically slightly more.

paulddraper··on Ask HN: How do you interview devs in a post-AI world?
Conventional technical interview (DSA, whiteboard architecture).

Then 1-2 day paid work trial.

Interestingly…no one has said no to the trial.

It turns out that people want to derisk their decision just as much, if not more.

paulddraper··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
I don’t commonly hear that.

Just in the instance that was chosen.

paulddraper··on Iran school bombing: grounds to believe US was behind atrocity, UN finds
Overstated.

It was never given as a fact.

Was literally "in my opinion" speculation. A dumb opinion? Okay. But not statement of fact.
