paulbeattie··on It’s time to give Firefox a fresh chance
I kicked the tyres on the new Quantum'd Firefox. Oddly I found that the GPU utilisation on my MacBook Pro is significantly higher than Chrome, even higher than Safari. Playing a YouTube video would make the MBP's fans spin significantly faster than normal which meant it' wasn't overly usable. The numbers were roughly 750 Mhz Firefox, 550 Mhz Chrome and 450 Mhz with Safari.

Not sure if it's an option I've got configured, I'd love to find out what was causing this though!

paulbeattie··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps vs. Waze
The one thing Google Maps is missing for me over the other two is speed limits. It's so handy to have an alert go off especially in larger cities where they can fluctuate frequently.

Waze sometimes feels like it's taking you off the beaten path to improve data reliability and collection. I've had it take me off a quiet street onto a country lane only to emerge onto the same quiet street half a mile further along but having spent a significant period of time taking a weird route.

paulbeattie··on Ask HN: Why is iOS 11 such a mess?
IMO and as other outlets have stated I don't think they planned to release the X this year. You can tell a lot of this just by the way the software feels like it has been shoehorned in to work e.g. swipe down from the right for Control Center, swipe down from the left for notifications.
paulbeattie··on Ask HN: Why is iOS 11 such a mess?
I disagree. I agree they need to focus on quality and performance and be public that they're working to address it. But they also need to focus on adding new functionality to catch up with Android and other flavours of Android. The mobile market is moving a little too quickly for them just to sit still and not move for 2 years.
paulbeattie··on Ask HN: Why is iOS 11 such a mess?
All valid points.

Personally I find that iOS recently has really fallen behind, the hardware coming from Apple is still best in class, software is terrible. Notifications are abysmal, the UI in places feels pieced together, some of the UI just doesn't make sense, functionality is lacking in a number of areas. That doesn't even start on the bugs.

To be honest the software and the software alone is pushing me more and more to Android as I'm really disliking the lack of traction from Apple on improving iOS.

paulbeattie··on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Aren't Fully Disabled When Off in iOS 11 Control Center
Not a fan. Off is off simple as that. It’s also really confusing to have two actions one in control centre the other in settings behaving in a different way but no cue to say they do.

Another “feature” irking me on iOS 11 is the disabling of flash or the flashlight/torch below 15% battery. If I want to use the torch or flash then I’ll decide if there’s enough battery left

paulbeattie··on Six Banks Pay $5.8B, Five Plead Guilty to Market Rigging
It's simply not enough. The penalties for such behaviour should be steep, such behaviour should not be tolerated from any organisation let alone those trusted with money.

Makes you wonder how in bed they are with the DoJ!

paulbeattie··on My DNS queries are being intercepted and altered in-flight
Have you tried hitting an alternative DNS resolver than Google's? You might find Google are tailoring results for VM which other providers aren't willing to do.

I get the same results on a BT Infinity connection, querying 208.67.222.222 or 8.8.8.8 return a 31.55.167.180 address or similar and querying my local router which uses BT's DNS returns a Google IP 74.125.230.238

paulbeattie··on Facebook tries Google's WebP image format; users squawk
Why is this even a news story? Surely if anything we should be praising the use of a new and arguably beneficial image format rather than complaining about some users incompetence to grab a view to open it on their computer.

It really seems such a bizarre thing to be complaining about. Facebook could make it a little easier by having a download as jpeg image option as well.

The world is always moving forward, why don't we just go back to bitmaps!

paulbeattie··on The danger of the trailing dot in the domain name
I think you might be right. I just tried it on an IIS server set to accept any hostname at the IP the site is bound to and it returned a 400 error as well. Removing the trailing dot made it work.
paulbeattie··on Google is a second class citizen on iOS
For me this doesn't so much highlight the headline that Google is a second class citizen but rather the inflexibility of iOS compared to Android.

Apple really should take a leaf from android's book and see how integration can be made better on iOS. It strikes me as something they have thought about with the new share dialogue using large icons.

paulbeattie··on 30 days with Windows Phone 8 — Perspective from an admitted iOS addict
the back button issue in IE10 mobile has still not been solved in WP8. It's one of the first things I noticed is the lack of a back and forward button. The back button definitely does not behave in the manner described unless resumed by holding down the back button and then going into the app but that's just confusing.
