pattyj··on Apple's Vision Pro headset deserves to be ridiculed
Agreed. However, I think the author fears that, just like smartphones, some will become socially pressured into getting one and it will cause them harm. So they're issuing a kind of public warning.
pattyj··on Asahi Linux to Users: Please Stop Using X.org
> Not to mention that talking about 'the major players in desktop Linux' is completely against what the OS ethos was supposed to be about; he said the quiet part out loud, and people strike back; it is only fair.

He also said[1]:

> We don't have the time

And then he said[2]:

> If you want to change that, better volunteer yourself :)

Rather, I think he's saying the loud part out loud. OSS can have an opinion, and you're free to modify it to suit your own opinion.

pattyj··on We will not ‘walk out’ of UK, nor comply with any request to bypass encryption
Living in and operating out of Germany must make this stance easier for Tutao GmbH. What options are available to organisations in the UK?

Once logged in, go to account security. There is no facility to add 2 factor auth. (as of Feb 2023)

Compromising someone's registrar account and hijacking their domain(s) can have serious commercial consequences. I'd love to hear 123-reg's excuse for still not implementing 2FA.

pattyj··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
Sure. Really, I was thinking of the scenario where someone explictly asks for a reliable source i.e. "Thanks for summary about X. To whom should I turn for more accurate/detailed information?"
pattyj··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
Is there a way to disuade users from blindly trusting responses? Such as unavoidable caveats, make no attempt to provide depth and instead strongly recommend reliable research?

And as a logical aside: if AI can't be trusted, we shouldn't trust AI's recommendations for reliable sources either.

pattyj··on New iPhone SE
So it turns out "the phone has a physically larger battery — a fact about the new iPhone SE that the company confirmed on background in a group briefing with reporters." When teardowns are published we can see exact mAh.

See https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/8/22967821/iphone-se-third-g...

pattyj··on New iPhone SE
Video playback up from 13 hrs to 15 hrs

Streamed video playback up from 8 hrs to 10 hrs

Audio playback up from 40 hrs to 50 hrs

According to https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/?modelList=iphoneSE2ndg...

It's the same thickness so who knows if the battery has more capacity. I would think it's more likely that going from A13 7nm to A15 5nm chip nets ~20% battery

pattyj··on CSS as the back end – Cascading Server Sheets
https://github.com/Level-2/Transphporm is the same idea with more selectors and caching
pattyj··on Deleting an S3 Bucket Costs Money
I've had to ask my credit card company to block AWS charging an account that I can't remember the login to.

Amazon can keep trying to get blood from a stone...

pattyj··on JavaScript Restrictor
I've wanted an extension like this for a while. Thanks for sharing!
pattyj··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
The whole premise was to return to the pre-web 2.0 days but have the option for a user to enable modern web app capabilities. Which your idea would be a step towards.
pattyj··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
Unfortunately, we've learned that the hard way.

Surely, though, a blocked network request never reaches the server and so it can't be used a 'flag'?

pattyj··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
Please remind me, what extra data can be sent via img URL besides the data in the original html request?
pattyj··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
i've wondered about this myself for a while

maybe an html meta tag that blocks all XMLHTTPRequests until the user consents. i don't think it would even matter if it was browser-specific

pattyj··on The 'Great Resignation' is really the 'Great Discontent'
Sure. I was thinking about large enough companies where you may not be negotiating directly with your day-to-day workmates.
pattyj··on The 'Great Resignation' is really the 'Great Discontent'
The greed and selfishness of my managers are significant factors in determining who I want to work for/with. And why I'm so grateful I can work with people I am friends with outside of work.

But I understand this is difficult, even impossible, to know during the interview process.

pattyj··on Fastly Outage
It would be interesting to see estimations on the man-hour cost of this outage.
pattyj··on Twitch, Pinterest, Reddit and more go down in Fastly CDN outage
Parts of GitHub, Amazon, Stripe and Twitter are down too. I'm sure these companies have considered this downside to outsourcing critical infrastructure.

It would be interesting to see estimations on the man-hour cost of even a short outage.
