patrickgzill··on Raspberry Pi now with 512MB RAM
I got a CubieBoard from CubieBoard.org specifically because it came with more RAM and had a faster CPU. So seems RPi is responding well and trying to grow their market.
patrickgzill··on New Zealand PM apologizes to Kim Dotcom (video)
Apologies are nice; now, who is going to jail for what happened?
patrickgzill··on Zynga stock plummets below value of its cash and real estate
You would be paying less than book value (value of copmany divided by number of shares), true.

However, if they lose money, then the book value will drop some more. Only if the company failed utterly and then returned the money to the shareholders (not likely) would it be "safe" to focus on book value.

patrickgzill··on Widespread vaccine exemptions are messing with herd immunity
Don't understand the downvotes - thought that the quotes around "cause it" would make it clear that I am not subscribing to any theory. That autism has increased is not questioned, what causes the increase is still unknown...
patrickgzill··on Widespread vaccine exemptions are messing with herd immunity
According to the study I found, 1 in ~300 Amish have autism. 1 in 90 of the regular population have autism.

The fear of autism shows people are in fact paying attention; whether vaccines "cause it" of course is really the question...

patrickgzill··on 32 cores of fast ARM in half-depth 1U case
2GB per node - not enough IMHO (at least for the use I was thinking of ).
patrickgzill··on India To Biometrically Identify All Of Its 1.2 Billion Citizens
This will allow massive credit expansion in India, as being trackable means lending companies can more easily identify people. Same thing has happened in the Philippines over the last 10 years, easy credit has exploded.
patrickgzill··on A Tor of the Dark Web
How many are Feds, on the site you mention? Something you did not take into consideration.
patrickgzill··on Joyent ending "lifetime" hosting accounts
Seems a little odd, surely with the cheaper RAM, far more powerful CPUs and inexpensive disks these days, they could spend a few $$$ and burn a couple of U , keeping their customers happy?

I don't know how many servers they would have needed in 2007 to provide the services they sold, but surely now they could consolidate all those users onto 1/4 the machines?

What is this negative press costing them?

patrickgzill··on Everything in your life is just a list
Hah, mine is a directed acyclic graph!
patrickgzill··on Terrorism is not about terror
Without a discussion of the extensive use of false flag terrorism, I think it is best to say that this article is "facile".

E.g. Lavon Affair (Israeli attempts to plant bombs and blame them on Muslim Brotherhood), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_flag#As_pretexts_for_war and so forth.

patrickgzill··on U.S. Admits Surveillance Violated Constitution At Least Once

patrickgzill··on Facebook Buys a Stake in $450M Asian Undersea Cable Consortium
It is not about net neutrality, it is about them buying bandwidth as cheaply as possible. 54.8Tbps now split in some proportion amongst the investors, 2.5x that once they upgrade to 100Gbit optics.

patrickgzill··on I build High Availability Platforms so Cloud is not for me
This is an excellent cautionary article... I still don't get all the love for AWS after they have shown that they have less uptime than many dedicated server providers.

Reliability is the greatest feature you can offer, as a downed service can't be used by anyone.

patrickgzill··on Going Colo
http://sas70.com/sas70_faqs.html ; Question #2 - who can perform/sign off on audits? Only CPAs.
patrickgzill··on Going Colo
Fair enough, but why can only CPAs perform such audits? It is spending $20K-$40K per audit for essentially nothing of importance. This cost gets passed on to customers.
patrickgzill··on Going Colo
You need to know very little of this actually.

EDIT: I will expand on this a bit.

First, the real question you need to know, is, who owns the building your servers will be in? Lots of people claiming to have datacenters are actually renting from someone else, or even sub-leasing from somewhere else, putting you 2 places away from the owner. As much as possible, get into a situation where your monthly payments go directly to the true datacenter owner.

Second, what about the network? Rather than engage in a lot of hand-waving, just find out who they are directly connected to.

Third, do they have both UPS and diesel genset backup for your power? If you are able to physically visit the place, have them show you the physical stuff.

Ignore the "Tier" datacenter and "SAS70" crap, Tier X != reliability and SAS70 is a load of BS (CPAs trying to soak up some consulting dollars - yes, an SAS70 report can only be prepared by a CPA firm...)

patrickgzill··on Woman Who Couldn’t Be Intimidated by Citigroup Wins $31 Million
The total fine of $158 million, after Citi got billions in support, is nothing, a mere rounding error on one of their quarterly reports. A simple cost of doing business...

The key take-away is: no one at Citi went to jail for fraud.

patrickgzill··on Will 'showrooming' kill businesses?
I would be interested to hear your take on Quill Corp. v North Dakota then... unless I am mistaken, even other states, such as Connectibut, agree with the main thrust of my post ... http://www.ct.gov/drs/cwp/view.asp?a=1514&q=268516 - that they are not allowed to tax items delivered by common carrier, coming from another state.

What you may be talking about is the use (I call it property tax) tax that some states wish to levy on property that comes into the state and remains in the state. I agree, there would be no difference between items regardless of their origin in such a case.

patrickgzill··on Live from Microsoft's mystery press conference in Los Angeles
My weird guess: eventually Microsoft will end up buying Vizio.
patrickgzill··on DotCloud updates pricing, uses new elastic pricing model
There are 512, 32MB chunks in a 16GB RAM server (let's say with overhead, you need 32GB RAM). $512 * $4 = over $2000 per month, for a single server that you can buy for about $2000 and colocate for maybe $100-$150 per month.

Sure, you can buy it in little pieces, and sure, it is managed, but really!

patrickgzill··on Will 'showrooming' kill businesses?
It is not a subsidy - it is part of the Constitution... you cannot put a tax on items that are coming from another state.

As well, it wouldn't matter, because the price differences on most items would still be a lot more than the sales tax. No one would go online if the only difference was 6% or 8% sales tax. We are talking 20-30% differences in some cases.

patrickgzill··on Will 'showrooming' kill businesses?
For myself, I have bought several drives from BestBuy.

Reasons:

-- I usually need them ASAP, -- figure they have not been drop-kicked to my door, and

-- I was told by a friend of mine that BB pays extra to have better quality drives (all drive manufacturers use statistical methods to determine the quality of a batch - the highest quality is sold for more). He is in a position to know, as he has worked for several large drive makers at a top level job(though not as high as VP level).

patrickgzill··on Cascading errors caused AWS to go down
The datacenter I use, has a policy to do full load runs for 30 minutes each month.

AWS would have found this, and been able to fix it in a timely fashion, if they did the same (the genset lasted for 10 minutes under load before failing).

patrickgzill··on Vizio reboots the PC: a quiet American success story

patrickgzill··on Heroku down?
Sorry to be rude, but that is a bit incendiary of a comment. However, given stats for the past 12 months, I can show that my availability for the 2 racks I manage, is in fact, higher than AWS. Thanks for the compliment!
patrickgzill··on How a Mexican Drug Cartel Makes Its Billions
Opium Wars - there is at least 1 President who had connections in some way or another to this earlier form of the drug trade.

FDR (via his maternal grandfather Warren Delano).

There are others who also became President, (starts with a B) who are alleged to have been heavily involved while in a secretive government position.
