patrickg··on Open Source Business Models
I really wish I had a good business model for my open source product (a database publishing software). I am doing my living from it - quite ok - (selling support), but I think I could do much more. If there is someone from Berlin, Germany with ideas or knowledge in that area, I'd be more than happy to talk to you about that (even might pay you for that).
patrickg··on XPath tips from the web scraping trenches
Yes, this is XPath 2.0. I don't bother with 1.0 if I can, because it is soooo far behind 2.0.

data: <data attr="1" />

xsl:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" exclude-result-prefixes="xs" version="2.0">

      <xsl:template match="/data">
        <one>
          <xsl:value-of select="@attr = (2,3,4)" />
        </one>
        <two>
          <xsl:value-of select="(@doesntexist,2)[1]" />
        </two>
      </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>

gives: <one>false</one><two>2</two>
patrickg··on Don't link to line numbers in GitHub
It was the page you've linked to (https://sourcegraph.com/code.google.com/p/go/.GoPackage/net/...)

just now about 7 seconds (repeatable), on a faster machine it went down to 3 seconds (also repeatable) (all numbers are from me counting in my head, so this is not exact)

patrickg··on XPath tips from the web scraping trenches
There are some things in XPath that I really like. For example `x = ( a, b, c )' means: `(x == a or x == b or x == c)' which is quite handy sometimes. Also `(a,default)[1]' makes it easy to provide a default if a is null.
patrickg··on Don't link to line numbers in GitHub
I really begin to like sourcegraph, nice job! I don't know how to ask the question without sounding too negative: any chance it might get faster? I took about 10 seconds (just a feeling, didn't measure it) to load the page.
patrickg··on European Citizens’ Initiative against TTIP and CETA
(Germany only, don't know about other states)

1) The national constition is the highest part of the German law, not EU law. The courts cooperate in many ways and co-exist, but EU law is not above the Constition / Grundgesetz. (See for example http://www.bpb.de/nachschlagen/lexika/177026/grundgesetz-und...)

2) The TTIP has to be ratified by the member states. (See for example http://www.bmwi.de/DE/Service/suche,did=630990.html)

patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
But we have a current set of valid laws in Germany. That can be a starting point.
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
Yes, I am serious. As a judge I hear a lot of people complaining about the laws (in Germany, that's the point). But when I ask them to give examples, they get always quiet.
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
I considered my initial post on topic :)

This is a very dificult and highly subjective topic. Free speech always ends where you start to hurt other people. So there is always 'censorship' in some way or another. The group of 'anti censorship' people (no censorship whatsoever) almost always neglect that point.

I think the only question is: how far should censorship go? Should we block sites? Should we block search engines (like in this case)? What material should be blocked? How can we make sure that the list of items that are censored does not 'overflow'?

patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
Please show me how this first post makes any point in the discussion.
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
Please quote some of the 'many' unjust, unfair and oppresive laws.
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
We can take the law as a starting point.
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
I am fine with the term 'censorship', but we should discuss: where does it start, where does it end? What kind of censorship is allowed, and what is not allowed?
patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
No, I don't think I am missing the point. My question was basically: is censorship always a bad idea? If yes, how can we enforce the law otherwise (forbidden pictures)? Or should we make our laws towards "showing everything is allowed"? Where does it start and where does it end?

patrickg··on Germany is pressuring Neocities to censor a disclosure of their censorship
To make it clear: these sites are not blocked, you can still acess them. They just don't turn up when you search 'sick forbidden sex with animals' on search engines.

How far does censorship go? Where does 'protecting our kids' start? Some of these sites contain stuff that is clearly illegal here in Germany. Is prohibiting something always 'censorship'? I'd say no, it is a matter of fine adjustment which has to be carefully established and controlled.

patrickg··on American spies in Germany: Up pops another… and another
If the mobile phones are turned into bugs, they should not record the voices.
patrickg··on Show HN: The Markdown Resume
It's not my site anymore, I was just the one who started it. All credits should go to the new maintainers and active people there.
patrickg··on Show HN: The Markdown Resume
Happy to see the Resume is based on ConTeXt, my favorite typesetting system. The developer is a friend of mine. Loooong time ago I've started http://wiki.contextgarden.net to collect information about ConTeXt.
patrickg··on American spies in Germany: Up pops another… and another
You are aware that you can record audio and send it later?
patrickg··on Code review without your glasses
Agree. I have some complex code that I revsit once in a month, and I cannot afford thinking though it again and again. Therefore my comments are getting larger and larger and more chapter like with many images inbetween. (I use locco for that, see http://speedata.github.io/luaqrcode/docs/qrencode.html for a different but similar example.)
patrickg··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on?
I am working on a database publishing software (= xml to pdf) based on LuaTeX (http://speedata.github.io/publisher/index.html) - actually this is my main source of income (creating product catalogs and such for big companies).
patrickg··on Dash – Beautiful instant offline docs for almost everything
I really like dash. It's also super easy to provide your own documentation. I've created a small python script for my software [1].

Here is the dash-feed: dash-feed://http%3A%2F%2Fspeedata.github.io%2Fpublisher%2Fspeedata_Publisher_(en).xml

patrickg··on From Parallel to Concurrent [video]
I always think of a web server, when it comes to concurrent vs. parallel:

A web server can handle serve many users concurrently, but if they are really served in parallel depends on the number of cores/machines.

That's why we now have the "small limited" company (Mini-GmbH or UG). You can start a company with limited liability with just a few bucks^H Euros.

patrickg··on Glenn Greenwald: The NSA tampers with US-made routers
»To protect against secret surveillance, Snowden said, we need to make encryption a part of everything we do. "The bottom line is that encryption does work," he said. "We need to not think of encryption as an arcane, dark art, but as basic protection for the digital world."«

patrickg··on Atom Is Now Open Source
That's true. I used to be an emacs fanboy (1) until one day came along textmate with snippets, tabs and "sub major modes" (don't know how to call 'em - take for example php inside html or such). Then I switched to sublime text. Now both editors are stalled... I might switch back to emacs.

(1) I've written lot's of elisp code, for example a norton commander clone called evening commander (https://github.com/pgundlach/evening-commander)

patrickg··on Atom Is Now Open Source

    Uncaught Error: Atom can only handle files < 2MB, for now.
I'd love to use an opensource editor for working on large xml files.
patrickg··on Ask HN: What do you use to organize your knowledge?
90% of my knowledge is in a bunch of text files handled by nvalt [1], a fork from notational velocity [2]

It is so convenient and quick to make notes and hyperlink notes between them and do full text search.
