patrickdavey··on Chris Lattner left Swift core team
This really doesn't seem like a "win" for Chris though? He's having to leave a toxic environment and leave a project he cares deeply about. In a company as big as Apple do they not have procedures in place to stop this behaviour? It just feels like the shouting person learns they can get away with this when they should be told this behaviour must stop or they'll be on their way out.

I have been lucky enough not to work in an organisation where I've been shouted at. What are you supposed to do in that situation? I'm pretty sure now I'd feel confident calling it out (though I definitely wouldn't have as a junior), but, what can you do if it doesn't stop? Just leave? Bullies just make me so angry.
patrickdavey··on Does my site need HTTPS?
Oddly, I got the Dutch version. I do have Dutch language installed on my phone, but it's definitely not the default. Odd.
patrickdavey··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
Good for you ;) Heh, quite jealous.

I assume this means you're running your own mailserver, which was something I was hoping to avoid.

It looks like Google does allow catch-all addresses on the new plan. https://support.google.com/a/answer/2685650?hl=en . I'm still very tempted to move to fastmail instead though. Email was all I really used the legacy suite for.

The annoying thing is things like toy apps which I have which are all with one of these legacy g-suite accounts (though, maybe those do all continue to work actually ?) What a mess (like, how does oauth work when I signed in with Google and now it's no longer a google account... it won't work.. gah!)

patrickdavey··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
Does anyone know how this works with "catch all" domain handling.

For years I have used FOO.org address with a legacy free edition. I always create service@foo.org email addresses, and they all drop through to the catch-all domain.

Can I just register the one address "patrick@foo.org" and have all the addresses still just fall through as normal? What a nightmare :(

patrickdavey··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
Only eating sweet things I've baked myself at home (i.e. no eating store bought chocolate or ice cream).

That's enough for 2022 ;)

patrickdavey··on Unix Admin Horror Story Summary (1992)
How did you fix it?
patrickdavey··on Leaving MySQL
I'm super tempted to move from MySQL to postgres, but, we are currently self hosting and MySQL is breeze to run. My only experience with postgres is running a brew update and it completely borking the database and having to track down some cryptic post in order to fix it. Also, as pointed out elsewhere, MySQL seems not to require vacuuming or anything else. It's the unknowns of moving which make me nervous.
patrickdavey··on Advent of Code 2021
Or not trimming your input. I worked and reworked and reworked a problem once, the answer was some number in the billions. Eventually I gave up because I just couldn't work out where I went wrong. I then took someone's working solution and plugged my input in, and I was out by one, because it counted chars and I had a stray newline.

I'd like to say it only happened once, but, it happened again later that year... And then never again (because I pulled out code to always strip newlines after reading it in ;)

patrickdavey··on Advent of Code 2021
I love adventofcode. I have a rule I follow now which makes it a lot more enjoyable: if I can't make headway on a problem after trying for a day or so, I'll use the subreddit to find a hint, and then usually that's enough to help me to the answer. Very occasionally I just completely cheat (often the pure math based questions).

I don't like missing out on the stars.... I mean it's the only way you get to see the awesome ascii art when you collect all 50 for the year.

Many thanks to Eric and team for what must be a huge effort to run such a fun programme.

Oh, the other thing I do: I don't even start until sometime in January :) far less stress and keeps the whole family much happier ;)

patrickdavey··on People who have unusual, or non-existent, inner voices
My partner is one of the most optimistic and positive people I have ever met. One day we discussed negative self talk, and she was like "nope, don't have that", as I was trying to explain the negative self talk. Then she was like "oohhhhh, you mean my brainstorm partner!!!!". Floored me. She just _doesn't_ do negative self talk, instead it's a collaborative problem solving approach. Amazing.

I listened to that show when it came out. Utterly horrifying and so blatantly corrupt. Only advertising locally and having to pay in cash (so the poor cannot afford to keep their own land). Awful.

"In the last hundred years, heirs' property laws have contributed to the loss of millions of acres of Black-owed land."

patrickdavey··on GitHub Issues-only project management
I wish GitHub would let you add issue only users. That is users who have access to the issues tracker but not to the code.

Would you mind expanding with a couple of examples? (E.g. using "foo bar" as a single line or split by whitespace).

I suspect I'll really like your way of doing things, but an example would be very handy.

Terribly basic question, but, can they not just use a VPN to tunnel through? I've heard kids are doing that kind of thing now.

I used osmand for navigation while biking around Europe. My trick was using Google maps to plan the route and then exported to a gpx file and loaded that into osmand. Worked pretty well

Like you I'd wanted a remarkable but could never justify it. Then a friend told me about the handshake crypto that was given away to GitHub users back in 2019 https://handshake.org/claim/ and how it was worth real money now.

Anyway, I claimed the coins, transferred them into dollars (just before the recent crash) and bought a remarkable for "free".

Honestly, it's a nice tablet, but, I'm glad I got it for free ;)

Are you suggesting hunting enemies in countries like Russia/China is going to go down well?

How would you feel if they decided to declare some enemies on US soil and start hunting them on your patch?

Unless your assumption is that Russia/China would agree to the hunting of course, but that does seem unlikely.

patrickdavey··on Text editing hates you too (2019)
I once read a book called "simplicity" by de bono I think it was...

He made the point (I think) that you do want simplicity, you don't want simplistic. That is: it should be able to do all the things you want to, but in an easy to use manner.

Worth striving for I believe.

patrickdavey··on Elixir 1.12
Does that mean you're going to be able to drop into an Iex.pry session right in the middle of an exs script without having to wrap it all in a project?

I always found I had to do that and found it quite annoying (working through adventofcode with elixir..)

patrickdavey··on Getting Started with Signal
I love signal, or at least the idea of it. I've been trying to get family onto it and away from WhatsApp for years, and we finally tried this week.

Unfortunately, my messages to the family group are stuck spinning (24 hours now) and I'm not seeing any new messages in the group (and should be). Nightmare.

If anyone knows a fix I'd love to hear it (have tried leaving the group and rejoining, restarting phone etc)
