patates··on Storied Colors – A catalogue of named colors
Life is colorful, life is cruel. Do not just hug your loved ones, hug the people who cannot hug their loved ones. A bit of kindness and a bit of sympathy go a long way.

Rest in peace Rebecca.

patates··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
> Outlook is based on WebView2, and like all web apps, it’s slow

Fastmail also has a web based email client, which is as fast as (if not faster than) Outlook Classic.

The new Outlook is just bad. Load order is wrong, it renders everything on every window, loads unnecessary data, etc. Plain annoying.

I miss mercurial sometimes, but we have so much tooling around git these days...

Tailscale is a very well established company in the field, and if you didn't hear tailscale before, perhaps this product would not be so interesting for you, so it makes sense here.

Otherwise, everything would end up being a "Thing Explainer"[0].

This is common practice, there was one for suez canal I think (is suez open or something like that - I cannot seem to be able to find that one though, am I hallucinating?), and there is one for rust being web ready: https://www.arewewebyet.org/

To me, all seems like a bunch of words I can recognize surrounded with stuff I mostly can't recognize but can sort of work out from the context.
patates··on I Could've Rickrolled the FIFA World Cup. All I Needed Was My ID
Look I don't like to see a wall of AI slop as much as the next person (see: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48551462), but "just post the prompt" is also too dismissive. AI had access to information that we don't have and all you see here is probably a compilation of multiple prompts, edits and various sources (like author's notes) for context.

We can adjust our expectations for people to take some time to make the output theirs.

OTOH, and this is me arguing against myself, maybe this is not too different than the million web sites we saw using the unmodified default bootstrap theme.

I guess my opinions as well as the response of the community are still evolving.

You hit the jackpot on security research, but you cannot take like an hour or two to at least get rid of the AI smell? Please do use AI, nothing against that, all I'm saying is please, please don't deliver this weirdness:

> I did not touch any of these controls. But they were there. Functional.

I really needed to push myself to read because it was very interesting and thank you, for doing the work and sharing.

patates··on I Love the Computer
Yeah, so Norwegian it is :)
patates··on I Love the Computer
I think then the AI-hype should be disregarded as snake-oil, not the tech itself. I know it sounds pretentious, but I need to say that words do matter.
patates··on I Love the Computer
I love the fact that if you speak German and English, it's possible to understand a lot of Dutch text.

I also love the Computer AND the Internet, allowing me to interact with and experience the world like this.

> the worst infinite scroll I've ever seen making it impossible to access the footer

Let's be fair, it's possible to reach the footer! You keep pressing the end key for like a minute or two and 665 requests (with embedded base64 encoded images and all) later, you have your footer.

So saying it's possible to reach the footer would be technically correct - the best kind of correct!

patates··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
I have a mac with loads of ram but I cannot even justify the electricity cost when deepseek is so better than anything I can run locally (including heavy quantizations of deepseek itself) and costs pennies. It's crazy how cheap it is!
patates··on Curl will not accept vulnerability reports during July 2026
> This seems like a lot of extra work

Music to the ears of a workaholic :)

Seriously, that'd be nice if everyone would do this (and I do it now, very strictly) but I also know how easy for one to start blurring the lines between work and personal lives.

patates··on Curl will not accept vulnerability reports during July 2026
Totally off-topic, but I read your profile to learn about this: https://allaboutberlin.com - you do awesome work, thank you!

Now I wonder if I could help the immigrants in my area (I'm in Hesse/Hessen), thanks for the inspiration too.

patates··on Curl will not accept vulnerability reports during July 2026
For the people here who want to do the same when they are vacation (be completely detached from work): Make it impossible for you to work! Leave your work devices behind! Log out of all accounts, remove 2FA keys after backing them up on paper and tell your partner to not give them back to you for the duration of your vacation, etc. I actually went to a country from which I wasn't allowed to work remotely. Crazy but it was that bad for me.

Yet in node REPL:

    > {}+[]
    '[object Object]'
    > []+{}
    '[object Object]'
... because Node's REPL and some consoles pre-wrap input that looks object-ish :)

> That's just not accurate. I've seen these systems run at multiple companies, and in every case they had a lot to do with skills and experience

> I am an L63 but the work I was doing, was something an L60-L61 could do

So you and OP believe that, these systems are good indicators of skills, so much that the last statement sounds normal?

I was thinking like that once, as well, but I got disillusioned. These stuff tend to be gamed.

> Why does Alice get paid 3 times as much as me to work on cooler and more important stuff? "Alice is L7 and I'm L4" is often an easier answer to accept than "Alice is a better engineer than I am" or "People with Alice's experience have more options than I do".

Sure, that's why these system exist. They justify pay, that's all there is.

patates··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
False dichotomy. Of course not everyone has the same experience/skills, but any corporate system of putting individuals to tiers has little to do with experience/skills.
patates··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
Believing in that system so much to say something like that might be worse. Noting against the OP, that kind of Stockholm Syndrome can be found in my past as well.
patates··on MiMo-v2.5-Pro-UltraSpeed: 1T model with 1000 tokens per second
It's not just software libraries. Specs, applications (the browser!), expectations, device integrations, operating systems, etc. So much that starting from scratch seems impossible.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but my brain cannot comprehend how machines can advance such interconnected systems while keeping humans in focus.

Perhaps I shouldn't have watched the Animatrix again.

patates··on OneDrive data now has an expiry date
I'm not against getting help from AI when writing, but at least take some time to make sure it's not place-filler slop.

AI;DR: Starting from early July 2026, all associated data will be deleted 12 Months after a user license is removed.

patates··on 1worldflag: A blue dot on a transparent background
I like the direction of unity but this will probably be problematic when we eventually start to colonize other planets. I don't want our first settlers to feel discriminated, so please kindly make a new version with more universality - now that I think about it, Universal Pictures also has the world in their logo so maybe this IS universal but we probably we need Jim and Hannah in the loop as well so they can chime in, and last but not least, we need a review from the legal so I CC'd to all, expect some new ideas/requirements.

Also, can we please make it "pop"?

ps. Attaching a version I made, and this took a lot of back and forth with chatgpt because I care about this a lot, so please have a look, I think we are close to something great here!

Looking forward to seeing more from you!

ps2. when I was about to send our manufacturing guy entered the room and he said the transparency could be a problem. Some alternatives without compromising the idea would be great! They must be cheap but elegant! Thank you!!

patates··on New method turns ocean water into drinking water, without waste
I always thought that if separating water and salt were easy, our bodies would have evolved to do it so that we'd be able to drink sea water and be fine. It must have been so expensive that searching for fresh water was worth it or there were plenty of fresh water that it was never a evolutionary pressure. Evolving kidneys capable of concentrating urine beyond 3 something percent concentration (sea water) perhaps required a massive restructuring of our internal organs and a huge constant energy expenditure, so we kept seeking fresh water.

ps. I have no clue what I'm talking about

> Juniors want this to be a chance to shine in a market that otherwise rejected them.

I actually am training 2 trainees (Azubi in German) and 1 working student. All three are somewhat anxious about the future but also all are learning in a significantly increased pace, compared to the ones I worked with 1.5 years ago.

They don't have to wait for random senior to answer questions, so they get stuck way less often. They aren't allowed to use AI to generate code though, so not sure how that'd look like learning-wise if we/they went all-in on AI.

patates··on Changing How We Develop Ladybird
I'm sorry, having a bad day?
patates··on Changing How We Develop Ladybird
I'm talking about Ladybird, AI and its effects on communities.

Stickers start conversations with people I have common interests with in unexpected places. I didn't know of this effect until I experienced it a couple of times, so that's why I keep them.

The reason I started was, to be completely honest with you, to show off my "skills" and beliefs. To be fair, I was much younger and naive.

Strong evidence against your implied accusation of me being insane is the fact that my licensed therapist not having me sent to an intensive psychiatry clinic yet. She says we'll be fine within the limited hours we get courtesy of the German health care system.

I do have ADHD and I do feel different all the time, and I tend to go off course when talking/writing, so maybe you mean that?

patates··on Changing how we develop Ladybird
When AI first happened, I was afraid I was going to eventually lose my job. And while I've been lucky since, many did, and that hurt a lot. When people are losing something to automation, regardless of the economics of the situation, you cheer for the humans, or at least hope that society keeps being fair to those who are most affected.

Now I see communities being affected. When you kill PRs, you not only kill the code contributions, but also massively impact the other, non-tangible contributions like ideas, eyes on code, etc. That feels way worse.

I'm conflicted, confused and afraid, HN. Look at what I just wrote, yet I use claude and deepseek and all the skills and complex harnesses and MCPs and whatnot... But all now seems like a transition phase. Transition to f-ing what though?

A lot of questions cannot be answered unless we dedicate a meaning to our lives. Human touch? Too late? Also: I liked a song and it was sonos. I unliked it after discovering. I feel so stupid, so often.

Sorry for the unhinged digression.

I love Ladybird (have a sticker on my laptop to prove!), I hope they thrive.

patates··on I built a vulnerable app and spent $1,500 seeing if LLMs could hack it

I'd hate it, sure, but it wouldn't surprise me.
