pasttense01··on FBI told to transfer 1,500 personnel from headquarters
The FBI has had a presence at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, for more than 50 years. Today, more than 1,300 personnel are working there in various operational roles. For info about the FBI Huntsville facility:

pasttense01··on A SpaceX team is being brought in to overhaul FAA's air traffic control system
"why are they floating tax breaks that will cost the country billions?"

Not billions: trillions!

pasttense01··on Most Influential Papers in Computer Science History
Nothing earlier than 1936? For example George Boole's boolean arithmetic or Charles Babbage's computers?
pasttense01··on Police Use of Face Recognition Continues to Wrack Up Real-World Harms
All police crime fighting activities wrack up real-world harm. For example I see an estimate that the police killed 1250 people in 2024. While most of the killings were unavoidable many were not.

So it's question of costs vs benefits for crime fighting methods like face recognition.

pasttense01··on The Movement to Redirect Billions of Taxpayer Dollars to Private Schools
I think there is a lot to be said for public schools to be eliminated, for all schools to be private schools with the government providing vouchers. So you would have some students going to a strong STEM school, others to schools with strong vocational education, etc--instead of students going to an average generic local public school. There is a lot to be said for freedom of choice.
pasttense01··on Why Greenland is of growing strategic significance
Nonsense. There are only about 200 U.S. military personnel in Greenland; if it was of strategic significance there would be thousands.
pasttense01··on A trip to urgent care almost destroyed me
If urgent care doesn't fix the problem, you should then escalate--go to the hospital emergency department if nothing else.
pasttense01··on The Use of Inmate Firefighters and Its Injustices
Even though there is a lot of hard, unpleasant work I think you would find most of these inmate fire fighters appreciate being out in the great outdoors--vs being locked up in a cage (a prison).
pasttense01··on University of Alabama Engineer Pioneers New Process for Recycling Plastics
China is no longer accepting plastics where they are shredded and put into a landfill.
pasttense01··on [dead]
I disagree with the article. DOGE is not about changing procurement regulations; it's about gutting environmental, safety, consumer protection regulations, drastically cutting the safety net and other programs popular with Democrats ranging from mass transit to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
pasttense01··on Google's Results Are Infested, Open AI Is Using Their Playbook from the 2000s
It gives you clickable links to a half dozen or so sources. It's not clear which of the information comes from source 1 vs source 2, etc.
pasttense01··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2025?
With anti-vaxers taking over the major health agencies, infectious diseases in children are going to explode.
pasttense01··on National Academies finds some benefits of moderate alcohol consumption
The problem is that a significant number of moderate alcohol consumers become addicted and are now heavy alcohol consumers.
pasttense01··on Buying a TV in 2025? Expect lower prices, more ads, and an OS war
Expect lower prices?

Doesn't the author realize that they are all produced abroad--and Trump has promised massive tariffs.

pasttense01··on Elon Musk's Playbook for DOGE Has a Precedent: X
Not really. At the end of the process with X Musk still wanted a working social media site; at the end of process of cutting $2 trillion from the budget Musk doesn't care if the government works or not.
pasttense01··on People are living longer – But spending more time in poor health
I wonder about the definition of poor health. When you have a chronic disease it may be managed adequately so you don't have a poor quality of life. So it may be that the article is just talking about chronic diseases--and not poor quality of life.

Could someone clarify?

pasttense01··on SpaceX Dragon Gets Competition from Europe's Nyx
No, it doesn't have competition from Nyx; it's a potential competitor as it will be years before it can be a competitor--and could quite easily not be a competitor then (running out of funding like so many other rocket companies).
pasttense01··on Ask HN: How do you feel about David Sacks appointment as AI and Crypto Czar?
I think it is very likely there will be a massive amount of crypto scams during the Trump administration.
pasttense01··on Paul Krugman retires as Times columnist

pasttense01··on Intel announces retirement of Pat Gelsinger
Time to split off Intel's foundry operations?
pasttense01··on Most American farmers have second jobs to stay afloat
There has been a big change in what farmers do. Traditional farmers both raised crops (such as corn and soybeans) and raised animals (such as hogs, beef cattle, chickens, dairy cows). This is a year around operation. Nowadays there is much greater specialization. If you just raise crops you are busy in the spring (planting) and in the fall (harvesting) and do some work in the summer (controlling weeds) and very little in the winter. So this leaves a lot of time for a part time job. Raising animals has become both specialized (one type of animal) and these being mostly very large, fulltime operations.

pasttense01··on Ask HN: Could the web disappear due to mobile apps and AI?
Really? I think it will get vastly larger--filled with AI generated garbage.
pasttense01··on Norway's Wealth Tax Is Backfiring. Are Americans Paying Attention?
So what taxes are there that don't have problems with tax avoidance? For example the U.S.has a shadow economy of about 10% of GDP where people are not paying income, sales, social security taxes.

pasttense01··on The disastrous rise and fall of a $10B Bay Area unicorn
"“I think if we had another six months, another couple $100 million,” he said, “we probably would have made it.”"

No way. It would only have worked if sold as a more expensive service (higher food costs/delivery fees) than conventional supermarkets--like Instacart does.

pasttense01··on Qualcomm Approached Intel About a Takeover in Recent Days
Wrong. A substantial number of advertisers dropped X.com because it isn't brand safe (for example their ads are located next to racist or Nazi or pornographic content). A substantial number of the staff let go were involved in keeping the site brand safe.

pasttense01··on What to do about America's killer cars
Think about going off-roading in your new $100,000 vehicle [although something I wouldn't do if I had such a vehicle]. Suppose there is a big boulder or you want to cross some water: you need the height!
