pastor_bob··on LinkedIn laying off nearly 700, mostly from core engineering teams
Reaching out for referrals, yes. Praising the company that threw me out on the street. No thanks.

>"We did not expect to share this important update with you all in the midst of such challenging times, but in the spirit of creating clarity, Tomer and I wanted to share some news regarding changes we are making to our orgs....Tomer and I made these decisions with deep consideration - Mohak & Tomer"

Is it normal for a CEO like Satya Nadella not to write this email? Kind of off-putting that MSFT is keeping its hands clean here. Mohak and Tomer aren't making this decision.

pastor_bob··on LinkedIn laying off nearly 700, mostly from core engineering teams
"Today I had to say goodbye to my fellow LinkedInians. I am truly grateful for the 2 years I spent there creating value for shareholders of MSFT. Being pushed by my managers to excel and being able to learn from Satya Nadella's memos made it some of the most impactful years of my life. ETC ETC. Please refer me at your company. Thanks." - 700 linkedIn posts appearing today.
pastor_bob··on Narges Mohammadi wins 2023 Nobel Peace Prize
>Edward Snowden

You mean the guy who has sworn allegiance to Putin and takes an anti-Ukraine stance on Twitter to save his neck? A guy who has made millions peddling 'his story' and lives a life of luxury in Moscow? Yeah, surely he should get a Nobel prize

pastor_bob··on Snap shutters its enterprise services division after less than a year
Ads make money.

Snap (and others) just continue to bet on the wrong things

pastor_bob··on DALL·E 3
it looks less like an 'oil painting' though. Looks to me like one of those stencil, spray-painted images you see people selling at tourist attractions.

Perhaps the Dall-E 2 unintentionally got that better.

pastor_bob··on Unity’s new pricing: A wake-up call on the importance of open source
I've heard (sarcastically) that MongoDB's business model is relying on companies who have it entrenched via tech debt and can't get out.

young people don't get screened for colorectal cancer.
pastor_bob··on Global trends in incidence, death, burden and risk factors of early-onset cancer
>Well what about reducing sugar and carbs altogether

The summary says red meat and low-fruit diets (which obviously have carbs) increase the risk of cancer as much if not more.

Why would they push for a keto diet if the evidence that it's beneficial is contradictory?

And if you opt out, they delete the chats from your history so you can't reference them later for your own use. Slick!

pastor_bob··on Why San Francisco Is a Homeless Mecca
> a federal injunction that bars officials from enforcing laws against camping or sleeping in public spaces as long as its homeless population exceeds available shelter beds.

If a place to sleep exists, you can demolish the encampments and force them the clear out. As the old saying goes, "You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

pastor_bob··on Why San Francisco Is a Homeless Mecca
> Mayor London Breed threw her hands up in response. “We can’t force people to accept or stay in shelters and we’re unable to prevent people from setting up an encampment in an area that was just cleaned. This is the situation we are in,” she tweeted Wednesday.

> She’s right. San Francisco is under a federal injunction that bars officials from enforcing laws against camping or sleeping in public spaces as long as its homeless population exceeds available shelter beds. As we recently explained, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment creates a right to vagrancy.

NYC has a ban against encampments because they provide shelter to homeless. Even after southern states have sent 100,000 penniless migrants to NYC, they still are able to find beds for people.

If San Francisco politicians can't create enough shelters, it's on them. There are hotels, parking lots, rec centers, etc if you have to deal with the numbers in the interim before you get housing up.

pastor_bob··on Oral cancer drug kills 100% of tumors in vitro and in animal models
It's possible that this drug doesn't wipe out all cancer cells if effective, thus leading to the possibility of the cells eventually mutating. But it's not like cancer is some bacteria that can become universally resistant.

The ABVD regime starts with the same baseline on all hodgkin's lymphoma patients, and 'cures' cancer permanently in quite a large number of them.

pastor_bob··on Oral cancer drug kills 100% of tumors in vitro and in animal models
The patent appears to belong to City of Hope[0], a non-profit cancer hospital.

Conspiracy idea: such a simple drug is not what Big Pharma wants, thus was never investigated.

Hopefully, if effective, it's affordable for people worldwide.

pastor_bob··on The entrance fee to America’s museums keeps rising
The Guggenheim Director makes $850k.[0]

The Tate Modern Director "earns between £110,000–115,000 ($148,000–155,000)"[1]

They do differ in public funding, but the philosophies between US and European museums are fundamentally different.

pastor_bob··on The entrance fee to America’s museums keeps rising
The focus of the major American Museum has become the same focus that, unfortunately, has overtaken a lot of other non-profits. It's not to show a collection. It's to make money.

And they dump a lot of resources in the marketing, fundraising and consultants, and blame 'wages' of the people who make 45k with, maybe, 2% yearly increases, when they jack up the prices.

pastor_bob··on Midjourney Showcase
The descriptions don't really have to indicate beauty standard though. Seems to be implied.

e.g.: "18th Century Regency Era Portrait painting of a woman with long hair, wearing jane austen cream floral"

"Asian woman, pastel colors, mystical, empowering, stand in your own power, infinite possibilities"

pastor_bob··on SF's Anchor Brewing Company shutting down after 127 years
How many readily available American Porters are better or even comparable to the Anchor Porter? I can only think of 1 (Sierra Nevada) off the top of my head.

It's a sad that you can't just sell a Porter anymore. Have to throw banana and peanut butter in it or make it 15% alcohol to get accepted by the 'craft beer' aficionados.

pastor_bob··on Tuition costs have risen 710% since 1983
Most of the 'service' industry is subsidized by cheap foreign labor. Harder for Schools and Hospitals to hire illegal/unskilled workers.
pastor_bob··on Apple's union-busting practices violated employee rights at NYC store
Unionizing is hard. Apple blatantly roughs up organizing efforts and after months of nothing, all they get is a 'cease and desist' order.
pastor_bob··on Cormac McCarthy has died
I always heard the "Big 4" (white guys) were John Updike, McCarthy, Don DeLillo, and Philip Roth. I think somebody like, the disgraced, Harold Bloom at one point said they were the last 'great', living American Authors.

To my surprise, Don DeLillo is still alive.

pastor_bob··on France plans to close tax loophole benefiting Airbnb
>Nearly 20% of people in the greater Paris region that do not already rent their home or part of it on AirBnB plan to do so during next year's Olympic Games in the French capital, according to a survey the platform commissioned from pollsters Ifop.

Crazy stat. Greater than 1/5th of Parisians plans to rent out their places to tourists?

pastor_bob··on 10 years after Snowden's first leak, what have we learned?
Snowden is free to do what he wants. But don't take the moral high ground when you're accepting being a propaganda pawn by a country like Russia. The fact that he continues to openly mock the US on twitter, while claiming he can't comment on anything Ukraine/Russia because he's not an 'expert' on the matter shows you exactly where his priorities are.

pastor_bob··on A vaccine for pancreatic cancer treatment?
Perhaps at some point, a 'generic' neoantigen profile vaccine can be produced that is somewhat effective. How much variance can there be amongst 500,000 cancer patients?
pastor_bob··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
Shopify already pays at the low end. I mean, not even relative to FAANG; you can make a similar salary at a government job as an engineer.
pastor_bob··on Shopify will be smaller by about 20% and Flexport will buy Shopify Logistics
>Logistics was clearly a worthwhile side quest for us, and started to create the conditions for our main quest to succeed. From the beginning, we worked with lots of partners on all aspects of this same problem: warehouses, robotics, transportation, crossdock, freight. We iteratively built a solution, step by step, through software, leases, and M&A deals, that could be an independent company one day. Shopify was the perfect place to bootstrap this effort from 0 to 1 and we have done this. The next step is to take what we have and take it from 1 to N as a main quest.

I don't understand the point of a statement like this. Why not just admit logistics turned out to be a sunk cost and you're abandoning it, rather than say "We actually killed it!"

pastor_bob··on FDA Approves First Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine
No skin in the game, but a cursory look at this article indicates it is bogus. Citing supposed death certifications is a really disingenuous tactic IMO:

>A review of death certificates found that RSV kills about 35 American adults a year

National Foundation for Infectious Diseases claims it kills 14,000[0]:

> RSV is second only to influenza as a cause of medically significant respiratory tract illnesses in adults7,8 and is estimated to cause 177,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 annual deaths in US adults age 65 years and older
