password11··on Yann LeCun: ChatGPT is 'not particularly innovative'
Full quote:

"In terms of underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not particularly innovative," said Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist, in a small gathering of press and executives on Zoom last week.

"It's nothing revolutionary, although that's the way it's perceived in the public," said LeCun. "It's just that, you know, it's well put together, it's nicely done."

>A drug that'd make me completely asexual (with no orientation) is the real solution for me, as currently there's none available

Escitalopram or most other SSRIs will do the trick.

To be fair, misspelling "Java" as "java" or "JAVA" is both a signal about Java knowledge and a signal about understanding what's canonical English usage in the U.S. So it's somewhat biased against non native English speakers.

But at the end of the day, software startups want hackers. And hackers know how to spell Java.

password11··on Antidepressants help bacteria resist antibiotics: study
I took SSRIs for 14 months and after I stopped this was my subjective experience as well. (And luckily only mild withdrawal/discontinuation symptoms.)
password11··on The Story behind ASINs – Amazon Standard Identification Numbers (2021)
> I objected to subdividing and having different parts of the string mean different things because it would substantially reduce the addressable space, and limit the number of items that could be moved through Amazon before having to go back and do this re-keying exercise again, with an even bigger code base. The people who wanted “special” ASINs were pretty persistent, though, so I threw them a bone: they could have all the ASINs that started with the letter A, and I would start the counter for ASINs at B000000000. Finally, this proposal had to get past...

According to https://www.clover.com/pricing/quick-service-restaurant

Clover's fees are:

Card-present transactions 2.3% + 10¢

Keyed‑in transactions 3.5% + 10¢

So if you have a merchant acct, you'd have to negotiate rates with Clover et al. directly?

password11··on Companies use drip pricing to overcharge consumers
I would assume all POS systems have to take a percent cut, given that they clear credit card transactions. They have to at least take 2-3% to cover the cc transaction fee.

There is obviously social pressure against pressing "No Tip". I feel it.

But then I remember that a tip is for good customer service. Starbucks didn't provide me any customer service, they simply transferred the coffee from their vat into my cup. At which point I can feel justified in declining.

I guess they're taking advantage of people who aren't familiar with this view of tipping, which I'd argue is the standard view in the U.S.

password11··on Certified 100% AI-free organic content
But if said company doesn't care about the human-generated content quality in the first place (evidenced by the fact that they're willing to replace it with AI generation), how is that not also a "nasty trick" by your standard?

At the end of the day they just want to optimize search results. And the Overton window of acceptability currently allows "human generated SEO content" but not "AI generated SEO content". It's just an arbitrary rule.

>but I got into SEO out of interest in the "organic web" vs. everything being driven by ads.

If the owner of an SEO site wants to use AI for "content generation", doesn't that mean they didn't care about the human-generated content in the first place?

Seems like a choice between garbage and slightly more expensive garbage. What is interesting or organic about that? Back in the day, people used to put things on their websites because they cared about it and wanted to say it.
