Also, to what do you attribute the successes of those dumber people? Pure hard work?
From an abstract of a research paper regarding FBS-free media.
I am not sure what the solution is. It’s a societal pandora’s box and it’s open.
Calling the lawsuit "counterproductive" is troubling as well as it almost sounds like they felt the situation was previously productive, i.e. moving in a positive direction.
What made you sign up?
I am planning to take up photography next.
If they accept the situation then they may well decide to de-risk your team. That could come from bringing someone trusted over from another team and putting them in charge or by fully outsourcing the work. In that case, you do not benefit from the upside of being the critical member in the long term.
So. I don’t think that staying the works in the long term and I think you will be facing an uphill climb in the interim as the company gets its bearings. Get the pay increase in the interim if possible.
Unfortunately, nowadays I dont have large blocks of personal time where I also have the energy and motivation to do programming.
When I had my own company, it wasn’t uncommon for me to put in 6 hours of straight development after hours since there were no distractions.
I'm sorry you are going through this.
Additionally, you either worked on your own time to do so or you worked during company time. If you did this on your time, you should take that as a lesson to use your time for yourself, including looking for a new job if the situation isn't rectified. If you worked on this during working hours, then you may have wasted your employer's time and money. Be wary of doing that type of thing.
My own goals were weight loss and regaining mobility. I played a lot of basketball in high school, college, and then again in my late 20s. By 38, I couldn't go down stairs without pain nor could I jump nor run. I achieved those goals with the help of the trainer and even played some basketball again, which I had completely written off as a possibility. In terms of weight loss, I lost 50 lbs and gained about 10-15 lbs of muscle.
We provided a budget and timeline. They gave us half the budget we requested (amounting to half the people) and still had us stick to the original timeline. We invested our money to hire others because we believed in the product and potential. They subsequently cut our budget by almost half again and we painfully managed to maintain our team.
When we were ready to start selling the product, they effectively used the hostile contract we had agreed to. By threatening to dissolve the company, they pulled the business away from us while trying to coax us into being employees instead of owners. We didn't come to an agreement and after a long and difficult process, the whole thing ended, we laid our team off, the software never saw the light of day, and our collective time and money was wasted.
Lessons: - Listen to your gut. - A hostile contract lays out how someone can screw you over. Ignore it at your own peril. - Don't optimize prematurely.
In the past few years, I've received bonuses that were massive and I could only have dreamed of some years ago. Since then I've come to realize that sums like that were not life changing. When I dreamed of them some time ago, I imagined they would have been. I would have bought the car I really wanted or bought a bigger apartment or something. But in the end, I would have still had a car and somewhere to live, working to sustain that quality of life. Is it life changing?
Beyond promoting a toxic culture, this will also result in people teaming up to push performance incentives their way. Like any other system, it can and will be gamed.
An influx of new people will do the following:
- Reduce graft and nepotism and corruption as a whole.
- Constantly bring fresh eyes to old processes.
- Increase and improve knowledge sharing.
- Provide people with a safety net while bringing them working skills that can be applied outside of government.
- Give more people a chance to understand how and why the government works. It will make them more sympathetic for others when dealing with bureaucracy of government and make them feel like they are a stakeholder in the process.
The concept of professional politicians is a new one. It is a sign that we have all given up on our ability to understand and participate in the democratic process. We should all be engaged and feel like we can be part of the process, at any level in the process.
