partiallypro··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
There have been attacks on Israel long before there was "oppression" of Palestine. You're just making a circular argument, you can say the same thing to justify what Israel is doing. I think saying Hamas is justified is actually grotesque, they also starve the people of Palestine, sell of children and women into sex slavery, intentionally put civilians in just as much harms way. How is doing that justified as a reaction to Israel exactly?

They aren't a Robin Hood like resistance. You're actually just siding with a different oppressor.

partiallypro··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
> that particular war was not of our doing

Well... arguably it is partially our doing. Not for the reason's Tucker Carlson & Russia say, but that Obama and later Biden totally sat on their laurels after the Crimean invasion, totally paralyzed by fear of escalation and political fallout.

partiallypro··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
It's actually shocking that so many comments don't know that the biggest draw -by far- happened under the Biden administration largely as a result of the Ukrainian War. In 2020 when the SPR wasn't full and oil was literally negative, Congress blocked the administration from buying oil to fill it. Instead they used the SPR for short term storage for oil companies (which was not the administration's original proposal.)

I get the Iran war part (though the bigger issue there is middle distillerates rather then crude atm), but people were screaming about the SPR drawdown, and lack of buying for 4 years before Trump ever got back into office; and it fell completely on deaf ears.

partiallypro··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I cancelled Disney+ years ago, am grandfathered into a Spotify/Hulu combo package, and I cancelled ESPN+ after they stopped their Bundesliga coverage. I haven't seen a Disney film in ages, part of me wonders how this company survives outside of nostalgia and college football.
partiallypro··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
But during private meetings, private conversations, etc people are already 99.99% of the time on their phones. Smart glasses have way less battery life and recording time (I think Meta's is 15-30 seconds now?) Wouldn't it be easier to just record a conversation on your phone without knowledge? You can even have the app running in the background. I haven't seen a complaint yet about them that isn't already worse, more discrete, or already available on a phone.
partiallypro··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
You think the phone has to be raised to be recording? How do you think perverts do upskirts, etc? Phone recording is very much less obvious, especially since everyone is already on their phones.
partiallypro··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
Can we get it to solve the Zodiac cyphers?
partiallypro··on ZuckOff is a free app that sees Meta glasses before they see you
I think the panic around smart glasses cameras is so strange, it's SO much easier to be a creep with a phone recording. You'll see it all the time if you're paying attention. Everyone is already on their phones anyhow, and especially with "creep shots" your head is a massive giveaway; with a smart phones, not so much, it can be placed anywhere. What practically could someone record without their knowledge that isn't already widely and more easily available through a smartphone? I just don't get it.

I do understand recording maybe during a sexual act or something without knowledge, but even that is probably just as easy with a phone. Feels like everyone is focusing on the wrong thing, given that level of privacy has already been eradicated and no one is going to give up their phones.

partiallypro··on I resigned from Anthropic today
My issue with these types is... If you really believed this, why not run to Congress and every world government instead of a Twitter post that will be buried in 2 days?

If civilization is going to end, why keep your equity? Microsoft, Google, etc for example all know these risks but they don't guide their revenues to reflect that AI will destroy them. Why?

Things don't currently add up, and so far it feels like a lot of alarmism is borderline grift for equity gains. Not to say I have total confidence this will all work out or that I won't be displaced, but as it stands a lot of the alarmist rhetoric doesn't match their actual behavior, which to me is more important than words.

partiallypro··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
It's not ignoring that at all, but I challenge you to go back to the person in China or India that suddenly has amenities and tell him they all have to go away, and everything they worked for over 20 years is gone for "the greater good." You're probably only viewing this from a Western view (already wealthy.)
partiallypro··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
This sacrifice involves putting millions back in poverty. I don't think you understand what I'm saying.
partiallypro··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
The issue with the global warming advocates is that they seem to believe that in order to solve global warming we need to make everyone's life worse. That was already a non-starter. It's just terrible marketing.

You say it's for the benefit of "decrepit old men," but the fact is that more and more of the globe is being lifted out of poverty and living more comfortably than ever before. The unfortunate fact is that global warming is an unstoppable force now, humans would have to go extinct for it to waiver.

I'm not saying we should do nothing, but I am saying that your framing is exactly why no one listens to global warming advocacy. We are powerless against it, not because of governments, but because people are living better and no one is going to sacrifice that; and even if they did the math doesn't add up to reverse course. The people that say we should all be sacrificing are often the richest among us that don't even know what sacrifice entails, contrary to your point.

partiallypro··on The turbulent AI era is here
"Taxing AI tokens will only lead to the acceleration of local LLMs"

This part was a good point, so I couldn't tell if the second part is satire or not.

partiallypro··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
The hysteria around AI and data centers has hit a precipice. It's actually a bit embarrassing now. I am pretty sure there are foreign adversaries that are trying to stop the US, but I also really blame the AI companies for doing the most horrendous job imaginable in pitching AI to the public. Not a shock that people are against something that tech bros have claimed will destroy everyone's lives in the next 5 years. These books were probably going into a landfill without AI companies getting them, regardless. Tons and tons of books go into the garbage every day.
partiallypro··on Pixel Watch 5
The round just looks better and far fewer people actively use the interface on the watch other than looking at the time or marking a workout. I think the squircle watches like Apple's look odd.
partiallypro··on How Claude marks AI-generated content
My question is what's to stop Google or any competitor from using watermarks of Claude or OpenAI from degrading the rankings of sites that use it but ignore or even reward sites that use Gemini. Seems like an easy thing to do for competitors, and maybe an unforeseen side effect of these types of things or regulations.
partiallypro··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Has someone ever adjusted the Big Mac index to account for shrinkflation? Seems like that should definitely be a part of it.
partiallypro··on USA Today Co., partners with Palantir to analyze audience data
At least in the military aspect, I have heard nothing but great things about them from service member friends/family.

I personally find the panic over Palantir, Data Centers, etc to be largely mass hysteria vs anything else. It has become an omni-cause like Israel (I mean part of the backlash against Palantir is that the CEO is Jewish, just read any internet comment thread on the topic.)

partiallypro··on ChatGPT Work
I'm ok with the merging, but would like just the normal ChatGPT to be a drop down along with "Work" and "Codex."
partiallypro··on ChatGPT Work
I see they are fully embracing the Microsoft model, soon we'll have ChatGPT Classic, ChatGPT (Beta), and ChatGPT (New)
partiallypro··on Google Chrome is killing all uBlock Origin bypasses, Edge, Opera to follow
That's pretty irrelevant isn't it? Shouldn't all users demand privacy, especially from ads?
partiallypro··on AI Is Slowing Down
The moat is the infrastructure and lock-in. Similar to AWS or anything else. Small data centers can't compete, and similarly people without massive compute won't be able to either (at least not on the enterprise level.) You might get a few edge models, but for huge businesses they will be using OpenAI and Anthropic (and Google/Microsoft/Amazon, etc).

The biggest competitors aren't small models, they are just the traditional players that already have an "in" with enterprises. That I think will start to show its face once this initial round of buildout is complete, which may not be for another 5+ years.

partiallypro··on AI is slowing down
I did. So, I'm confused how does that negate my comment exactly? Your second complete sentence totally is in conflict with your first btw.
partiallypro··on AI Is Slowing Down
The only "bubble" with AI is that the initial build out is cyclical, and many of the high flying chip stocks with no software arms (ala Nvidia's CUDA) will come back to Earth. I think anyone that thinks AI is going away or won't have massive impact (though maybe not in the doomsday scenario) are in complete denial.
partiallypro··on Microsoft announces Scout, an autonomous AI agent built on OpenClaw
Tesla trades at a massive multiple, Microsoft doesn't. I think a lot of you just hate Microsoft and ignore (or rather prefer to pretend) the reality that the world runs on it.
partiallypro··on MAI-Code-1-Flash
> "GitHub Copilot had competitive pricing until yesterday when they changed from per-request to one of the most expensive per-token quotas. Seriously, take a look at their burning subreddit for some laughs"

AI is expensive and it has been heavily subsidized. I you think $20/mo for Codex/Claude flat vs a more usage based model you're in for a shock. Especially once these companies go public and have to meet investor expectations.

partiallypro··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
AI snippets are just terrible, I always just scroll past it. I want to find the website I'm looking for, if I wanted to use AI I'd open up an AI app or website.
partiallypro··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
America is very very rich, the average person is much wealthier than the average European. 76% of Americans do not live paycheck to paycheck. That is a self reported stat and not reliable. It's a media sensationalist headline grabber which virtually every economist ignores.

People don't like saying America is rich because it defies their beliefs, but the actual stats don't lie. Every American I know that has moved to Europe (and I have lived there as well, in Munich) moved there with, shock...American money and savings. So they don't actually get the initial start many Europeans do and it clouds their view to think that's just how all Europeans live.

That doesn't guarantee that this will always be true, but given Europe's current trajectory, even with the US's many shortcomings...it's hard to say Europe will catch up anytime soon.

I read enough HN to know what it is -absolutely- true. HN comments, including this thread, often just read like BlueSky screeds half the time the US, US government or Sam Altman/Elon Musk/etc are mentioned.

They all deserve criticism, but when that's all a thread turns into when these items come up, well the discussion becomes very hollow and partisan really quickly.

partiallypro··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
It seems you or the team have culled many of them. There was one in particular that stood out but it seems to have been removed or they are heavily buried now. I just saw your post further down the thread, so you have seen them and I assume action was taken, thanks. There are still some that I find distasteful, but not as bad as what I was originally seeing towards the top.
