paride5745··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
Bluesky is not a real decentralized system as the company behind it say. Bluesky (the company) controls most key parts of the network, and it is basically impossible to setup a really decentralised alternative provider for the ATProto network, like you can do today with ActivityPub (Mastodon) or Nostr.

Sure, you can setup you PDS and own your data, but it is useless without the Relays and a self-hosted Firehose, and running you own website is basically impossible.

And lastly, let's keep in mind that BSky is a commercial entity, not a no-profit like Mastodon or a commmunity effort like Nostr.

And yes, I am ignoring the political toxicity of the network because I think the technical aspects are bad enough.

paride5745··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
Definitely.

RSS is still great for news and Signal/Telegram/Whatsapp are more than enough to keep connected with friends&family.

paride5745··on Linda Yaccarino is leaving X
Let's be honest, there is no real alternative.
paride5745··on The language brain matters more for learning programming than the math brain
Interestingly, I became better at learning human languages after learning a couple of programming languages. I was good at math at the beginning. I guess programming kinda bridged the gap.
paride5745··on OpenAI is building a social network?
It makes no sense to build a social network nowadays.

With Mastodon and Bluesky around, users have free options. Plus X and Threads, and you can see how the market is more than saturated.

IMHO they should look into close collaboration/minority stake with Bluesky or Reddit instead. You have a huge pool of users already, without the need to build it up from the ground up from scratch.

Heck, OpenAI probably has enough money to just buy Reddit if they want.

Ideally you shouldn't have to backup /var/lib/docker, as your docker configs should live in your docker-compose.yaml or whatever you use to start your docker containers.

Also I have included backing up /etc confs in my original post.

I agree on the brew list being incomplete, totally forgot about casks. Not even sure if they work correctly under Linux to be honest. I literally just use brew for golang and awscli :P

paride5745··on The Origin of the Pork Taboo
It is even more deep that this.

Archeology tells us that common people of ancient Judea/Israel were more flexible in their practice than post-Roman orthodoxy implies.

From Asherah statues to an entire Temple (Elephantine island on the Nile) working in parallel to the Jerusalem Temple.

The matter of strict adherence as a National identity/religious practice became important following the Diaspora following the Rome-Jewish wars.

paride5745··on The Origin of the Pork Taboo
If this was the case, why Jewish practices from Eastern Europe and the Middle East/North Africa are so aligned?

And even communities that are even further away like Ethiopia, Yemen, and India, are mostly following the same pattern?

Modern Judaism is very much connected to the state of affairs of ancient Israel/Judah from 24 centuries ago.

paride5745··on Fedora 42 Beta
I recently switched from Fedora to Linux Mint Debian Edition (I work mostly with Debian servers so I am more comfortable with apt than dnf), and the switch has been smooth for me.

I keep my home directory organized and backed up on my NAS, so for me reinstalling is straightforward. Also I use Flatpaks whenever possible, so reinstall them is just looking at ~/.var/app and reinstalling what is there.

Other files to back up might be custom /etc confs, and maybe lists of packages you need (dpkg -l or rpm -qa are your friends).

I also use Linux brew for some more up to date software (e.g. golang) and just brew list is your command to get what you have installed.

In general, keep a backup of your home folder (I suggest skipping backing up ~/.cache to save some time and space) and you are mostly good to go.

paride5745··on Writing a simple windows driver in Rust
What is meant is that instead of ~/.app/config, you are getting now ~/.config/app/config.

It’s much cleaner and it comes with a more logical and useful split of config and cache stuff, e.g. you can just skip .cache when rsync-ing to a remote storage instead of having a long list of per-app escapes…

paride5745··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
Similar experience for me. Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups and telegram groups. Some years ago somebody tried to move people to signal groups, but it went nowhere… and this is Germany, where there is no sympathy for Meta and in general people are quite privacy aware.
paride5745··on I wrote a Game Boy Advance game in Zig
I remember in Win98 it being hidden in the Windows folder, if you didn’t know where and what to look for, it was pretty much impossible to find.
paride5745··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
It’s already exactly the same problem.

@zuck.bsky.app

and

@zuck.meta.com

are two different accounts.

The only “problem” bsky solves is choosing a server. But if ATProto becomes widely used, the problem will appear as in Mastodon today. The only way to avoid it is for bsky to never become really decentralised. So yet another VC-backed social media company.

paride5745··on The legacy of NeXT lives on in OS X (2012)
Mac OS X Server (Rhapsody) was using the classic Mac OS look over a NextStep base. You can find x86 versions online which work in VM, for nostalgia and research.
paride5745··on Tk9.0: CGo-free, cross platform GUI toolkit for Go
Cgo in server projects makes using Alpine as a base a headache honestly.

If I can I always pick pure Go solutions just for this reason.

paride5745··on Ask HN: How do you share and sync .env files and secrets with your team
Years ago, before going full on Vault, I was using git-crypt, a git plugin that uses gpg to encrypt files before committing them to the repo.

Not sure if it’s still fine, I see their last release is 2 years old nowadays.

paride5745··on Russ Cox is stepping down as the Go tech lead
I wish they would opt for ARC instead of a GC, to have a more deterministic memory objects lifecycle.

Other than that, I agree with your comment.

paride5745··on Zed on Linux Is Here
lol

good stuff snap is in pretty much any distro repo out there :D

paride5745··on Zed on Linux Is Here
Indeed!

Just release a flatpak, even a snap.

I’m not asking to support all distros. But at least one between flatpak and snap is enough to support pretty much all distros out there in a clean manner, not with curl | sh

paride5745··on Each Facebook user is monitored by thousands of companies
Every time I open FB, I see only sponsored and suggested content, and never any content from friends, pages or groups I'm in.

Since a few years I moved my social media presence on Mastodon and Instagram (too many non-tech people stuck in Meta-lands). Honestly, I am kinda happy to see many of the pages I follow on FB moving to Threads, yes it is still Meta, but with the incoming ActivityPub integration it feels better.

I wonder how long until Meta will eventually integrate FB with Threads, so that you can easily crosspost between the two, as FB seems to be in maintenance mode since a while and I think Meta will eventually shift focus on Threads more (so expect Threads groups, Threads marketplace, Threads messenger, ...).

Hopefully with ActivityPub I can follow my racing teams pages from my own Mastodon-server and delete my Meta account (finally)...

paride5745··on Has Xbox lost the console wars?
Still waiting for GT 7, but honestly I can't justify buying a PS5 just for a game.
paride5745··on Ask HN: Should Google Buy Reddit?
I am thinking this as well.

Reddit has a huge value for Google, and Google doesn't need to monetize APIs and even care too much about 3rd party clients without ads. The real value of Reddit is its data/content, and Google might value that more than ads for training its AI.

paride5745··on Ask HN: Should Google Buy Reddit?
Reddit is not valuable for its tech, but for its content. They would buy reddit content, and likely they wouldn't need to rush making it profitable per se, as the data sets Reddit can provide would be more valuable in today AI race.
paride5745··on Minix development has been abandoned?
Minix3 was born as a full OS, not a management engine. What Intel really did with the code, nobody really knows.
paride5745··on Minix development has been abandoned?
Yes, full OS with its own microkernel and NetBSD-forked userland.
paride5745··on Ubuntu 23.04 – 'Lunar Lobster'
The difference is that Canonical forces the contributions ownership to be handed over, while RedHat plays by accepted opensource practices.

So while Canonical might have good initial ideas, the way they manage projects really kills them, e.g. snaps properly opensources might have been successful, instead they enforces the use of their proprietary server and ignore community requests (like moving /snap to /var/snap or making it configurable or allowing different servers/sources for snaps, while you can relatively easily make your own flatpak server and have users add the repo to their systems).

paride5745··on How to Start Your Blog in 2023
I don't think Medium was ever a good option.

Too much tracking, too many paywalls, and not easy to relocate your posts to another platform.
