parfe··on Emacs Live (2013)
Dangerous compared to what?

./configure && make && sudo make install?

apt install xxxxxx?

Downloading and running an exe?

pip install git+https://github.com/somerandorepo/package-name-seems-legit.gi...

You download and run arbitrary code without reviewing it all the time. Why does this specific method seem more dangerous to you than any other?

parfe··on Larry Page’s startups working on flying cars
Are you referring to only the first flight of the day?

A plane lands, taxis to the gate. Passengers disembark, the plane gets cleaned and refueled, people on the ground checked it out, new passengers board (me), and it taxis from the gate. At no point did the pilots leave the airplane to "walk-around".

parfe··on Larry Page’s startups working on flying cars
I just flew on an a320 and watched the plane taxi to the gate. Someone on the ground crew in an orange vest walked around the plane and did a visual inspection using a flashlight. At no point did someone from the flight crew leave the plane.

parfe··on Why You Can’t Lose Weight on a Diet
>'After several months of eating fewer than 800 calories a day and spending an hour at the gym every morning, I hadn’t lost another ounce.'

>So the 'not much science involved' calorie balance really REALLY should have resulted in a loss at this rate, yet it didn't - how do you explain that? I mean that literally entirely contradicts your claim.

Explanation is simple: The author either lied to herself or she lied to us. Her diet and workout plan did not violate the laws of physics, so she's wrong.

parfe··on LAPD hacked into iPhone 5S belonging to slain wife of 'Shield' actor
>Authorities allege about 8:30 p.m. on the day of the killing, a man called police from the actor’s cellphone, saying that he had just shot his wife to death.

>A handgun was later recovered in the home.

parfe··on Legal marijuana sales forecast to hit $23B in 4 years
Judge asks "jail or rehab?"

"Jail, your honor", said no one ever.

>Rehab stats for weed have nothing to do with addiction. Primary marijuana admissions were less likely than all admissions combined to be self- or individually referred to treatment (18 vs. 37 percent). Primary marijuana admissions were most likely to be referred by a criminal justice source (52 percent) [Table 2.6].

parfe··on NPR decides it won’t promote its podcasts or NPR One on air
Local affiliates are independent stations with their own production departments. Some shows get picked up for national syndication (e.g. Car Talk from WBUR, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me WHYY, On The Media WNYC, Prarie Home Companion by Minnesota Public Radio ) while other shows might target the local market which won't make sense as a national broadcast.

Local affiliates can cross license content directly between each other, or from NPR, PRI, BBC, American Public Radio, and Public Radio Exchange, etc.

Local affiliates are not simple repeater stations, as you seem to believe.

parfe··on Facebook is a growing and unstoppable digital graveyard
I needed zero proof to memorialise the profile of a deceased friend. Didn't even have the exact date of his death, let alone any documentation. It had been over a year, so I guess Facebook took a look at the profile activity and wall posts and decided it was a legit request.

parfe··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
In my org we started using slack and the people who talk the most say the least.

Important conversations already took place on our internal jabber server. People with nothing to say never connected, but now with animated gifs and embedded youtube they use slack for entertainment.

Never thought I'd see Eternal September in a professional environment.

parfe··on Yahoo announces plans to kill off Games, Livetext, Boss, and more regional sites
Anyone complaining when google shuts down bum projects need to remember this. Yahoo let divisions fester along leaching resources from the company with no clear path to anything. When google cuts a project, even if you super seriously love it, they prevent an announcement like this.
parfe··on What the IBM Layoffs Look Like
Programmers eagerly work in EA style sweatshops producing games and other software with massive unpaid overtime, or count themselves lucky that IBM kept them for just a few extra months to train their replacements.

IT workers could demand protection from the same abuses that custodians and delivery drivers fought for and earned decades ago. But then the industry might need to admit their collars aren't as white as they pretend.

parfe··on What the IBM Layoffs Look Like
>Until the tech industry wakes up to the reality that they _are_ labor

Never going to happen. The great conceit of the tech world peons is believing they're above the simple garbage man or postal worker. After all they create such value. Admitting a union would help acknowledges they're not special.

parfe··on Banned by the Publisher

It's pretty simple. Get rejected, complain about how the man is holding you down, and hope the free publicity rolls in. It's marketing.

parfe··on Banned by the Publisher
Why is this blatant marketing allowed on HN?

This is the same ploy as the "banned" super bowl commercial scam. Submit something obviously unacceptable and then cry foul when it gets refused hoping to get views via the media attention.

parfe··on Have FTDI kicked-off round 2 of the clone wars?
Had to resort to the FTDI supplied driver on OSX because the OSX bundled FTDI driver caused the entire usb subsystem to die.

I reproduced the issue by connecting two FTDI serial ports, opened each /dev/cu.usbserial* device node with a screen session, and piped War and Peace.txt through at 115200 baud. Closing the screen session on the read end would cause ALL usb devices connected to the Mac to cease functioning.

parfe··on GE will move headquarters to Boston
Convenient how they managed to get a handout so large it convinced them to move their international headquarters, yet so small it doesn't negatively affect their competition.
parfe··on Go 1.5.3 released to address security vulnerability

parfe··on GE will move headquarters to Boston
The subsidy gives GE a competitive advantage over their competition on every contract they bid on, every hire they offer a salary to, every item they sell on the open market.

GE can operate below the margin a fairly competing company operates at, forcing them out of business. The government picked a winner and created losers.

parfe··on GE will move headquarters to Boston
Welfare is awesome when it's gifted to multi billion dollar corporations, I guess.
parfe··on Why I love Snapchat
altonzheng got it right I think when he wrote

I had a similar revelation a while back with Snapchat. Users complain that you can't create groups to send to, you have to manually select each person. I like this - it means when you receive a snapchat, you know that person intentionally selected you to share a part of their life with. It adds a subtle but meaningful quality to a message that could be considered spammy and impersonal
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10860501

Snapchat requires you to select who you want to see your snap. There's no facility to push into everyone's feed. I'm not sending it to my "Friends" or my "Family" without consideration.

You aren't going to click 200 people, or 150, or 50. You're going to think "These five people really love hiking." Or "My cousins were talking about adopting a husky." Or "Last time I burned bacon like this was with John and Jane."

Saying "you can only have 150 friends" wasn't the key to a more personal experience. It just meant there was a hard limit on how many people could spam you. The key for me is the tiny marginal cost of sending something to N+1 people, so instead you choose more thoughtfully.

parfe··on Why I love Snapchat
I don't think it's the people. I think it's the content.

Facebook and Twitter inundate me with reshared content from third parties that I mostly have no interest in. Snapchat in contrast is content created by people I know, and they choose to send it to me specifically.

It might be as mundane as breakfast, or a pet doing something funny, or new bedroom curtains, but it's still an update about the life of a friend. Facebook might have a rant about how awful the day at work was which is boring to read. We've all got jobs. Or a reshare of 43 things every women in her 30s hates about Thursday afternoon. Snapchat might have a picture of someone's lunch knocked onto the floor. You think "hah that sucks" and it's gone.
