pard68··on Emergency-hired teachers without degrees as effective as licensed educators
Makes sense to me. I attended public school all my life. Everyone I knew more or less had the same out look on formal education, means to an end, can I just get the spark notes, thanks.

In college I interacted with a strange life form called a "homeschooler". Almost without exception they were smarter, better read, and had a desire to learn. Educating children seems to be far more than degrees, licenses, and CE credits.

pard68··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
dang (the moderator of hn) does this for many/most common reposts. It is done without comment or implications.
pard68··on Kind of annoyed at React
The only React that should still exist is server side. The vdom has no place client side in 2024.

Thank you for the due diligence.
pard68··on 95% of container ships are now going around the Southern Tip of Africa
Are the drones fire and forget? Why has EW countermeasures not effectively crippled their ability to target ships?
pard68··on Death of a Programmer. Life of a Farmer
I am a programmer and run a dairy and egg farm. The two professions go very well together.
pard68··on Drones are the new drug mules
I agree with you and am confused by so many replies to your comment essentially suggesting that drugs are the only means to enjoying life or being recreationally unproductive.

I have spent some decades now enjoying life and being very enjoyably unproductive at times while remaining sober.

pard68··on Drones are the new drug mules
Not the drone delivery program I was promised
pard68··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
Hm, I hadn't seen that a bit upstream of you in Lynchburg, but most pawpaws we collected from were probably too remote.
pard68··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
They are natives to all of Virginia and they are shade loving trees. They actually prefer shade as young trees and not until they are fully mature can then tolerate sun.

Source, lived in VA for a decade, hunting for wild pawpaws and growing my own trees. Before we moved out of the state we had a pawpaw "collection" of about fifty (ten we owned, approx forty we found in the national forest and harvested yearly).

pard68··on The Aha Stack
The naive tldr:

Render the HTML server side instead of client side, then the client is only doing DOM updates.

pard68··on Standard Ebooks
My thought was that many/most religious works are public domain and are already readily available elsewhere.
pard68··on Ask HN: What has quantum computing achieved so far?
Like war, "absolutely nothing".

This could be done in Fennel very trivially.

pard68··on Quairading shire erects signs telling travellers to ignore Google Maps
I tried twice when we moved here, my suggestions were never taken. I gave up and just use my business to give directions now.
pard68··on Quairading shire erects signs telling travellers to ignore Google Maps
They do that to us too. Google wanted me to take a detour over an access bridge that allowed a farmer to cross a ditch (man made creeks in the Missouri Bootheel).
pard68··on Quairading shire erects signs telling travellers to ignore Google Maps
If you put my address into Google Maps you end up in almost the furthest place from me in the state of Missouri (USA). It's literally 7 hours from me, but Google insists that this is my address. Poor satellite repair man ended up on a dirt road nearly in Iowa when he tried to come out.

Google also suggests that the best way to get from one paved road in our county to another is a 25 mile dirt road which _fords_ three creeks, one of which is never below 2' deep. If you are not driving a vehicle capable of making that crossing you will end up stranded in a creek, a 4 hour walk from cell service

pard68··on CSS Is Fun Again
We write Lit at work, same story though. I almost never even use classes anymore because my JS and CSS is scoped. `foo-card`? Nope, `article > div > span`.
pard68··on Nintendo Network shutdown – The beginning of the end
The website that posted this post (Pretendo) is doing just this, sort of. They are working to RE the 3DS and WiiU online capabilities.
pard68··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Yes, I tend to agree, it sounds fishy, but I don't speak Germany but from the google translate of the TUV site and then some accounts of people here, it sounds like they do fail for normal surface rust. One or two people mentioned anecdotes that the inspectors have told them to go drive around and brake heavily before coming back.
pard68··on Costs of running a macOS app studio business
Ah I see, thanks. I thought it might be the equivalent to our social security tax.
pard68··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Missouri's inspection is on par with CT and VA from my experience. But that's the only midwest state I have lived in.

If I had a hunch, income plays a part. Flyover states are poor, that means older and more beat up cars. Older cars (out of warranty let's say) are more costly to fix. States have to balance "people need a car to make money" with "people need money to drive safe cars".

pard68··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
At least where I have lived if there is an emissions check it is a separate test. I think the inspections I have had to do involve brakes, lights, steering/tie rod, windows (no cracks/chips), exhaust, and I think in VA the engine light could only be on for frivolous things.
pard68··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
Many states (or all the ones I have lived in anyway) have regular, mandatory inspections.
pard68··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
It's not "degraded" if it has rust. Brakes rust if you look at them too hard and then they clear up when you brake again.
pard68··on Neocities – Developers API
I paid for Neocites but had to cancel and move elsewhere (Cloudflare atm) because it wasn't always updating files. I forget the exact issue but I went to report it on their Github and found a one or two year old issue opened already with no dev response, so I moved on.

What is "social insurance"?
