parafactual··on Experimental tree-based writing interface for GPT-3
i create new notes, put interesting and shiny texts in them, and weave from them for fun and intellectual or aesthetic inspiration
parafactual··on Experimental tree-based writing interface for GPT-3
I maintain a less featureful but easier to use and less janky Loom implementation as an Obsidian plugin: https://github.com/cosmicoptima/loom

(Why Obsidian? Because then I don't have to write a text editor from scratch, and because one can then combine it with other plugins. Also because I intended for this implementation to work on mobile, but getting the UX right for that is annoying so it isn't supported right now.)

davinci-002 is a good publicly available model to start with. Weaving takes practice if you want something very specific.

parafactual··on Some Assembly Required: An approachable introduction to assembly
What do you mean by "pronoun-hedonism"?
parafactual··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
This means that NFTs still don't denote much without a centralized authority. Doesn't that defeat the point?

(That might not make them worthless, since value is socially constructed, but it makes the claims of decentralization seem less impressive.)

parafactual··on Jony Ive’s first major design since leaving Apple
I often criticize designs for being overcomplicated. I wouldn't level that criticism towards this seal, though, and I don't have the skill to make it.
parafactual··on Jony Ive’s first major design since leaving Apple
I would be interested in talking about it if you or anyone else came up with it. I find the seal very aesthetically pleasing.

parafactual··on How to rapidly improve at any programming language (2016)
Not all of us are professional programmers, and especially not all of us are only professional programmers.
parafactual··on Habits of Expert Software Designers (2019)
> (And often when you ask people to be more forthcoming and give their formal definitions they wave their hands and say that software development is art not engineering and that it's about craftsmanship and beauty not cold, hard, unfeeling things like calculi, categories, or algebras)

I find it interesting that anyone would see these as mutually exclusive.

parafactual··on I'm a Frito-Lay Factory Worker. I Work 12-Hour Days, 7 Days a Week
As far as I can tell - correct me if I'm wrong - management is just easier compared to (say) manual labor in a factory.

They're also paid more per expected hour.

parafactual··on Neorg: Neovim 0.5’s answer to modern life organization
Even with the example you mentioned - cmd+backspace 5 times vs. "5dd" - I'm surprised that you can't see why some people would prefer the latter. (Also, if you're on the last line, I think "4dk" works.)
parafactual··on Neorg: Neovim 0.5’s answer to modern life organization
It would be nice if the default keybindings were listed somewhere in the wiki. Did I miss them?
parafactual··on A personal story of treating social anxiety with 5-MeO-DMT (2016)
That's fair. I just sometimes get the sense that people equate being "logical" to being very hardheaded and skeptical, only preferring well-established solutions. There is nothing inherently illogical about trying experimental approaches; in many cases if they don't work you can just move on.

This isn't exactly that, though.

parafactual··on A personal story of treating social anxiety with 5-MeO-DMT (2016)
> He considered himself a logical rationalist with a self-described “zero tolerance for woo-woo,” so when his search for social anxiety treatment lead him to a psychospiritual retreat center in Mexico, referred to him by Psychedelic Times, he felt completely out of his element.

I don't really understand how these things are connected.

parafactual··on Cool URIs don't change (1998)
This principle seems like it extends far beyond site traffic, especially since something like life satisfaction is much harder to measure.

parafactual··on Why bugs might feel “impossible”
"Feel impossible" is a pretty awkward way to say "experience learned helplessness".
parafactual··on Some Americans are breaking out of political echo chambers
Deeply understanding viewpoints that pose a direct threat to you takes a lot of effort. It takes time and mental resources. I don't think it is fair to expect that of everyone; activists, sure, but most people just want to live and feel safe. That is hard as is, especially for trans people.
