paradoxparalax··on Google gives Wikimedia millions
that's saddening.

I remember when there was no Internet, and you never hear about it will possibly exist (where I was back then)

and then when it some day became something I just hear about and had the dream to use someday and see working with my own eyes.

And then I though Internet will bring the political (r) evolution that will make humanity human, and that it will have all the Knowledge of All the Scientists from All the World open to anyone, even a poor kid like me, to see and learn and thrive...

Wikipedia is still what is closer to that dream I had as a kid who had ever never touched a computer...So it is saddening, but we still have hope.

paradoxparalax··on Google gives Wikimedia millions
What can make us less sad is that quality of people who notes the Professor is also important, not only quantity.

There was a fun story I can't find here on HN right now (Algolia is pretty good to search now , but Im out of coffee), On how the guys who make OpenBSD(If I recall) use/used(not clear) CVS instead of GIT to filter out people they didn't ultimately wished to have the attention from.

"My understanding is that it's possible (albeit staggeringly unlikely) for any possible structure, including living beings, to spontaneously form via quantum fluctuation, and given infinite time and space every possible structure will spontaneously generate."

That was exactly my perception, specially given infinite time, not to mention space, so here is Infinite squared, or Infinite x Infinite, because there are two Infinite fields of possibilities.

Off course I didn't have any Idea about the existence of Quantum Fluctuation, just was my intuitive perception. And thank you for teaching me about It's existence.

"If the many-worlds theory is true..."

This is already too complex for my Simple Mortal Mind to understand, at this moment of my lifetime.

Wow, now That is some complex sounding stuff!!!

Wikipedia say's it's from a Man called David Kellogg Lewis (September 28, 1941 – October 14, 2001); an American philosopher, so...From Plato and Socrates until you get to 2001 there is a lot of stuff to learn, indeed...

Eureka!!! Thank You nyc111, you are the Genius One!

what you said is obviously true, but in our Mental Experiment we assume priorly that we are talking about a imagined perfectly Random 50/50 % chances of Heads or Tails. Reality is more complex then mental experiments, of course...

...So your point is very good!!! Reality is the point...Yes...So the life existing in other planets is still good, no mind the misconceived infinite monkey theorem being wrong or right.

And okonomiyaki3000 may have made a good point too, so we don't worry and ...

I had never thought He would reach the Tortoise, even when I was a kid and heard this Zenon's Paradox for the first time. But that is interesting and funny and you made me smile.
paradoxparalax··on Hemingway’s World War I savior is anonymous no more
Yes, thats what I thought...but also the chances of getting a head in 10 shots is bigger then getting a head in 2 shots, otherwise playing only once in your life at lottery would be the same as playing everyday, but the financial cost is measured by unit, I mean, the price is by single ticket. Or I am wrong here all again and this is where I was wrong?

Sorry you maybe you made your comment before some edit I made, But I am grateful you have pointed out this, Thank You.

paradoxparalax··on Hemingway’s World War I savior is anonymous no more
Yes , sure, thanks for adding this point too. It will be infinite only inside the limitations that were set when formulating the problem.

It can not extrapolate out of the limitations only because something inside it is infinite. But this I knew before, it is pretty obvious, off course, at least for me, and what you say explain the number 3 analogy in the parent comment I was replying to, I see now, and the reason I found the analogy weak is that this was already obvious.

And thanks for confirming that "...(0 for either, being a possibility).." That was the important bit for me.

Also, the chances of getting a Head in 10 flips is bigger then the chances of getting a Head with only 2 flips. So if we got 10 Heads already, every time we get another Head, it may decrease in some way the chance of getting another Head next flip, But the Curve of Decrease in the chances of getting a head again will approaching zero forever...

...(no, this may be wrong, theoretically, every time you flip the coin the chance is always 50%) , but the overall(infinite) curve's line will never touch the zero line.

this probably wrong somewhere, that is why people go broke trying to do the "double the bet" by playing always on the black or always on the red on the roulette at the casino, always doubling the bet when they loose some shot.

This is paradoxal and confusing for me and is the reason I stopped jumping from 15, 20 meter high rocks into the sea. I thought the chances of something going wrong (solely because of the Law of Probabilities, not counting ageing and other factors) will Increase overall, and someday I was going to get hurt.

paradoxparalax··on Hemingway’s World War I savior is anonymous no more
Good catch. I have never thought of this. Thanks. the "common misconception" you mention is common probably because it is normally one's first intuition.

So, if I understand well, (sorry to say that but the number 3 analogy didn't help), the probability of something not happening with infinite chances or opportunities to happen can be small, but the chance of it never happening exists (so if we flip a coin infinite times, we may get infinite Heads and never get a single Tail(?))

Now that you said that in your comment, it feels intuitive.

And this shows that there is a common misconception about the theorem of the infinite monkey[1]. And changes some intuitions about the chances of intelligent life existing out of Earth...

The worst would be a small leak of CO (not CO2) , even in very small quantities, daily miligrams of CO coming from a leaky(small leak) Gas burning heating system. This will most probably get students scores down, among other extremmely bad health effects.

Bigger CO leaks are extremely dangerous, many people lost their lives because of heating systems.

If you can, change to Oil Flow system with burner outside the house and far and aislated from humans. Or, if you can, electrical system. CO from gas is Really Very dangerous.

(using the word "very" is against Mark Twain's advice[1], and using the word "really" is against my own advice, but there are exceptions, here above was one)

1:

“Substitute "damn" every time you're inclined to write "very" ; your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.”

Move out of Beijing right now. Or out of Hebei province, or faraway from North Henan Province. Just move as sson as possible to a place with good air.

It does't not worth the money to live in Beijing, no matter how rich you can get there, and you can get rich there, but it simply does not worth.

Your life is more important, specially if you have kids.

Don't know if above is getting downvoted by the the rightists or by the leftists here, what is fun. But probably getting d.v. because of being too caustic, too snarky and too ironic, what is not fun and I confess I deserve.

And, most important off all, I am getting downvoted for being Not polite to xeromal, and I apologise to xeromal for this. My comment sounded like he was being discriminative or something like that, what is not true, and off course I should have found a decent way of pointing that the ideal temperature to sleep varies from person to person. And off course, I should have avoided going astromically off-topic. But will not delete the comment, to let the lesson there for myself.

Irony is really not welcome, I have to make an effort to understand that and abide by rules and follow the recommendations.

But giving or asking explanations for up or down votes is equally Not recommended and not welcome, sure.

Better to abide. Otherwise just do[1] like Bender Bending Rodriguez of Futurama.

The original quote from Bender is: "I will make my own Lunar(really on the moon) Amusement Park, whith Blackjack,... and Hookers!!!. ...Well...forget about the Blackjack...You know what?...forget about the Park too."

: There is a risk, not for the Ianomami that are somewhat numerous, but that some other in Brazil are going to Extinction soon, after the last elections in that country. Only if they could move to Denmark...Or Northern Canada, where there are Inuits too. But North Canada recently is so full of political "moon landing" deniers that they probably would not be very welcome there. But Greenland is far enough from "civilezed" people. But they will have to learn how to hunt monkeys and collect mango fruits in the north-pole.

I am a fan of giving new nicknames to things when I do any noticeable, even collateral, in extremely early stage, improving.

Financially wise, must be a good thing to do, too, but it is not the main point. The main point is Not that I sound smarter when I use the new nickname(therefore this is not exactly sarcasm), but that I can have a more-at-hand/shorter way to identify the new, subtly improved version, and It saves a lot of words, in the "spoken". colloquial, communication.

Now for the matters of Science improvement itself, I mean, like for Humanity and stuff, I am not clear if this is good, maybe. Science and business, in a very subtle, almost invisible way, mixed. Always have been like this, and it probably will continue like this, for a while.

That he was said or he said or someone said that because he could be Hindu(!) It has surely nothing to do with not being an Atheist. You speak like you were his good friend. Have you read all ""his"" writings?

: (!) "Definitely not an atheist. He merely..." Again, too confident when saying something about someone who lived 2000 years ago...If it was about someone you knew personally, I would take it. Now I was confident too, and confidence is a two-edged sword(again!) , but your confidence, not adhominen, mind you, I say AdCommentum that, by how your Tone sounds, your confidence is bigger than mine.

:And to conclude: What you call Hindu here? please clarify, because if you say that this is a Religion, I mean, If you are talking about hinduism, mind, ( off course when you said Hindu there you are not talking about he being born in India) So.There is a thing called Buddhism, and this thing is Not called Hinduism for some reason, so if buddha was something, he was Buddhist, So saying that he was Hindu to prove this point is unreasonable reasoning. Now forget about Hindu or Hinduism, If you are saying that the Buddhism Buddha Thinked(not the one people transformed in fairy tales) is not an Atheist, serious, Serious, philosophycal thinking, that thats what you are saying, because there is no Rigorous Scientifically proof of what you say, And to conclude the conclusion: We Cannot Read His Mind, even if he was alive.

Wow! I don't know how to start to thank you for this, I am as happy as a child : D sincerely, honestly, Thank you.

Whooa, I see she was born in 1868, and thought: How? I really had the perception that she was a contemporary of our lifetime...then I saw she died in 1969! 100 years, and I see that her life was more crazy and amazing that I thought.

I thought she was an academic researcher at some uni. She was an opera singer!, among other things, and published an Anarchist treatise at age 22 or so! and a feminist one at age 20 or so. I knew she was smart.

Cannot believe she was there in Wikipedia all the time. My world is demolished, with any google-fu confidence I had left going crumbs and dust...This is shocking. But is always good a reality shock to bring feet back to the humility shoes. Thank you quake guy.

Everytime I re-read "100 years of solitude", Its a completely different book. I can't "see" things I remember "seeing" before, I see things I didn't saw before... It is always in a different language, and Gabriel G. Marquez himself said that a good translation is another book, but this is probably because I get old, and not because of the translation. It is going to be so fun, can't believe I will re-read her books again after 27 or 28 years! it is going to be so much fun.

Now, the tiring thing of it, is that I will have another pretty girl Idol to research every bit of her Life(sigh) Oh no! Zhao, the Brightness and the Light[1], was enough for a lifetime of research and her long-term thinking understanding and learning. I need more lifetimes.

paradoxparalax··on My Parents Are Flat Earthers
Those fairy tales, I would bet that , if let's say for example Jesus, existed in reality as a person(not clear) He maybe didn't speak any of those fairy tales. They are inventions made by distorting and contorting what was originnaly said by the Thinker, most probably with malicious intentions.

Now there I am not clear, but in the case of Buddha, when he walked on earth(most probably true, if not already proven) I am even sure, and I dont like to say I am sure, because confidence is a two-edged blade, but all datapoints point to Buddha being probably very close to what we call an Atheist, and the rest was most probably added later as fairy tale.

A very good, I mean the best and most enlightening work ever written about Lamaism/Buddhism is probably that of the French Author Alexandra David Nell, That I have read decades ago, still remember her name, dont remember any of her books name, and Never found any mention of her existence again on Google or DDG or anywhere! Now everyone's DDG is the same, but as everyone's google is unique, if someone find any vestige of this French Author in his/her Search Engine, and can point us, I would be immensely , sincerely grateful, because I have been looking for it for decades now. Her writing still sounds like she believes in fairy tales, but in a pythonisical way(the best way :) she tells step by step all the non-metaphysical, philosofical serious explanation of each one of these concepts, that became fairy tales with time, unfortunately.

:late: How come the word "pythonisical" doesn't exist in English? Or my google is angry at me? Well...I hereby declare it's existance from now on, and, off couse, explain that this word is related to the smart and drug lover pretty girl(coincidentally!) that used to hang around the temple of Apolo in Delphi, and she was called by her close friends Pythia.

I make a daily effort to point out to elderly people in my family to be extremely aware of the electronic "fishing" for LandMoonDeniers, using "fishing hook/bait" headlines mixed in the middle of "serious/real" headlines, or adds placed by the website or the social media tool, and even spammed chat tool messages bought by the thousands from you know who.

When someone clicks one of this, they know you are easy to braiwash or scam. This is already very old technique , already used before Internet was so widespread, when a pretty girl will make cold calls all day long from some IP telephone call-center installed in Panama or Costa Rica or , in a small operation, in the Cayman Islands, and as she was trained, she could detect a LandMoonDenier in a minute by the phone, and she would set up the Larceny lace around his neck to scam her/his money.

Examples of this baits can be found, for instance, on The Sputinik News, what is very Scary and is a shame, and does't help at all the denial of Russian Interference by russian gov, but actually they don't really want to deny it(because it is not them who is doing this, If it was, they would never let the minimal vestige of evidence that it was them who do it), they know who is working in the shadows to elect , for example, a brainless in brazil, and they know this weird things are not coming from anyone from the U.S. or from the US intel, so they are just having fun playing and letting play, as long as the game is good for them.

:off course, the world's oldest profession is probably not that of the sex trade, or the sex trade was born at the same time that the criminal religious larceny firstly made by the first human who got a curious colored stone and told his tribe that this stone was God and that the village should give him/her good sex and good food,to keep the Priest of the Stone, bearer of the Words and Laws of God, happy, and to keep God happy by extension.

So what explains that the ratio has absurdly dropped after the Police crackdown? Manufacturing is still going on here, actually, manufacturing there is growing stronger as ever, with the workforce Surplus, now, salaries of factory girl workers went down a lot, because we don't have other things to do now besides work in the factories now, so manufacturing has nothing to do with this, and even if it had, a city doesn't become a sex capital because of high-ratio women:men, would be overly simplistic reasoning, and that's what I was replying to,

If this was true, please mind, BaoAn district that belongs to Shenzhen (and where you cannot find a single male boy among thousands of pretty girls if you go to try to get a table at a cheap worker's restaurant at lunch time in a big factory's gate), and every other labor-intense manufacturing hub all over Asia would be Sex capitals, what is not true. The district of BaoAn, in the border between Dongguan and Shenzhen, actually geographically located much more close to Dongguan, but belongs to Shenzhen, and because it belongs to Shenzhen, and not to Dongguan, Sex business is "forbidden", or at least nowhere as freely allowed as Dongguan(was), you can't compare. What get us to the reason a city becomes a Sex Capital in a country where prostitution is forbidden by the law(!)

The reason is that the Gov of that country thinks prostitution is a necessary evil that helps to prevent violence and rape and other things, so this Gov indicates a place where this can happen, for the sake of Society's Harmony(SheHuiHeXie). Almost Every city in China has a street, a neighbourhood, or an area where the Police pretends to crack but let it happen, at least until people start to abuse the relative freedom, because humans cannot have nice things without abusing it, then they will indicate another place to start from scratch.

Vietnam too.

I saw by the other comments this is not related to wechat pay. wechat pay have been a hassle to use for at foreigner fields for some years now.

Life without wechat in China is ok, but wechatPay helps a lot. In Zhejiang province and other industrial hubs Alipay is widely used, even by the little cigarrette shop seller, but most places this is most WechatPay's territorial waters, yes, maybe because Alibaba's birth of place is Zhejiang.

Many years ago I helped a cooperating individual and had to buy a Phone inside China, could not get Phone device from abroad to pay things with WechatPay by any means.

Later, could not make transactions after a while, even walking in person inside a foreign branch of ICBC, having accounts both in the same name in a China's local branch of ICBC and at the said foreigner branch, and firstly to have an account in a foreign branch is not easy, so thigs are getting hard indeed for wechatPay abroad.

Even my "personal" wechat, in a phone that is decadely old, with decadely old wechat account, has suffered a rather strange and suspiciously unexpected cut on the maximum amount of financial transaction limit.
