panpanna··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
No, the only rules that Google actually enforces are about security, scamming, trademark and stuff like that.

While there are guidelines for making better apps, google is happy to publish anything.

panpanna··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
Since when is google in charge of app functionality and UI??
panpanna··on Our app was banned because the button says “Report User” and not just “Report”
Daily reminder that your business/project/hobby should not depend on anything controlled by Google.

Edit: Despite all their shortcomings, I wouldn't mind seeing android phone makers join force and create an independent app store.

panpanna··on Git Clone Vulnerability Announced
What an odd title.

This is about the recent git LFS RCE (CVE-2021-21300), which afaik does not effect linux.

panpanna··on Google announces Flutter 2 with support for the web and desktop apps
Maybe it's just me, but I just can't figure Flutter out.

I mean, if you do exactly as their demos it works fine. But as soon as you do something else things just break.

panpanna··on Google’s VR dreams are dead: Google Cardboard is no longer for sale
It's Google, the ADHD company. What did you expect, really?
panpanna··on Are Xiaomi browsers spyware? Yes, they are (2020)
Xiaomi devices are officially sold in EU. Wouldn't a GDPR violation basically kill the company??

Note that Xiaomi is a Chinese startup hub, started by former googlers. 90% of what they sell is produced by Chinese startups.

(That being said, I would use never Xiaomi software myself. I only use their hardware with open source 3rd party apps)

panpanna··on Theo de Raadt 'Re: new: lang/zig'
I wonder why this was flagged...

Was it about his view on zig? Or his comment about rust??

panpanna··on FPGA Developer Tutorials
This is probably what you want

http://www.latticesemi.com/Products/DevelopmentBoardsAndKits...

ICE40 board directly from the FGPA manufacturer. It's cheap has an open source toolchain and works without any additional hardware. Just plug it in and go.

panpanna··on Nvidia made $5B during a GPU shortage and expects to do it again in Q1
Can't wait for AMD to focus more on GPUs now that zen 3-4 are done
panpanna··on FPGA Developer Tutorials
This is a great resource, but maybe a bit slow-paced for some people.

For a more learning-by-doing-it tutorial, I highly recommend fpga4fun

panpanna··on Facebook v Australia: Who blinked first?
I think the Australian government pretty successfully turned people against Facebook.

Facebook went far when they removed government information including covid articles and the with a little help from the government most aussies saw that as "the evil corporation is blackmailing an entirely nation".

Which is really what it was, so that's that.

panpanna··on Firefox is reviving “Sponsored Tiles”
> You can also turn off sponsored tiles, so this isn’t different in that respect.

The point is, I should not need to keep a close eye on Mozilla and disable stuff regularly. I should not need to fight my browser.

panpanna··on Firefox is reviving “Sponsored Tiles”
I desperately need a browser extension that automatically disables the latest shenanigans from my browser vendor.

Something like ublock with an open list maintained by the community. That way, I won't need to keep up with the latest crazy ideas Mozilla suits come up with to earn 0.01% more while annoying 99% of their costumers.

panpanna··on Firefox is reviving “Sponsored Tiles”
Here is a crazy idea:

Maybe web technologies have gotten too complicated. Maybe they need to be replaced with something that does not cost hundreds of millions to support?

panpanna··on Firefox is reviving “Sponsored Tiles”
Mozilla is getting hundreds of millions of dollars to set Google as the default search engine. You can change that in 10 seconds.

How are these stupid additions better for anyone? Consumers find them more annoying and they probably don't result in any significant month for Mozilla.

Anyway, we need another open source browser, one that is controlled by the community and not some SV company.

panpanna··on My tutorial and take on C++20 coroutines
Is learning modern C++ worth the effort in 2021?

I know classic c++, but don't really use it anymore.

panpanna··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
Will this work?

One "excuse" miner had for buying GPUs was that they could sell them 6-12 months to gamers.

panpanna··on Chrome OS became the second-most popular OS
But you have a dedicated search key!
panpanna··on Chrome OS became the second-most popular OS
I am a bit surprised by this. Why did this happen? Let's consider som possible explanations:

* Schools: School laptops were already a thing, I don't see how pandemic can significantly change those numbers.

* Price: Chromebooks are now much more expensive. And there are more cheap windows laptops now.

* Ease of use: Maybe this is tech savvy people buying laptops for their grandparents so they can keep in touch?

I don't know the answer. But as much as I hate recommending google products, chromeos is now a really good option for a lot of people.

panpanna··on Malware in open-source web extensions
I would actually be happy with some well planned machine review and some clean rules that are actually enforced.

A man can dream, I guess.

panpanna··on Umberto Eco: Ur-Fascism (1995) [pdf]
Oh, it's not as chaotic as you think.

If you have not read it already, check out Numero Zero by... hmmm... Umberto Eco.

panpanna··on Malware in open-source web extensions
The article is about The Great Suspender.

Kinda off-topic: with enough eyes all bugs are shallow, but does that really help when Google prefers playing whack-a-mole to doing the right thing?

panpanna··on Are the New M1 Macbooks Any Good for Deep Learning?
Some of the most important research papers of the last 10 years amount to tiny code snippets and use very small datasets.

Not everything needs to be gpt3 scale.

panpanna··on 20% of requests for Wikimedia Commons are for one image of a flower
According to the article IPs downloading this image come mostly from India.

So replace it with the pakistani flag to solve the problem (or start WW3)

panpanna··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Well, we need to build houses with bitcoin miners for heat generation.

(Idea stolen from guy on reddit who actually did this)

panpanna··on AMD reportedly developing ARM silicon chip
Note that AMD already uses ARM in their x64 CPUs, although not as primary cores.

These are mostly not user addressable CPUs and are used internally for management etc.

panpanna··on AMD reportedly developing ARM silicon chip
... and Nvidia.

But that probably doesn't count anymore.

panpanna··on AMD reportedly developing ARM silicon chip
This is not entirely correct. AMDs existing CPUs beat M1 quite comfortably.

Where M1 shines is power usage under load. That's what it's fanless, hence even longer battery life.

panpanna··on Investigation Xoth: Smartphone location tracking
On android 9+, giving it the permission is not enough.

You must also enable the GPS and wait for it to lock your position :( :( :(

So yeah, it's a function designed to force you give away your location (masquerading as a privacy feature)
