pampas··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Google as just as scammy as the scammers. For many years they manipulated auctions to capture more market share.

As a publisher it really sucks. The DSPs must know these ads are shit. It would be trivial to filter them with a bit of AI.

I've asked my Google partnered SSP to disallow ethically bankrupt ads like gambling, alcohol etc. They say "we've asked the partners to block those categories"... and then it just keeps happening. They're either unable or unwilling to help. I had to take ads down for several days at my own expense due to rogue ads. The ads are now in safe frames which doesn't pay quite as well but I'm okay with it.

This. When it's a person the original quote applies. But big companies have millions of data points on everything and are competent in areas they care about like their own profit. So you can assume it's not ignorance. They don't care if a publisher has to spend loads of time resolving issues rogue ads and malvertising because it doesn't affect them and the end user just blames the publisher.
pampas··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
All the friction goes down to the publishers fighting malvertising.

Suppose a secret like some personally identifying information was recently leaked into the main branch. You are legally required to scrub it. How do you fix it?

Ideally a repo needs to reflect the state of every event that happened. Practically there are edge cases when it's just best to rewrite history.

pampas··on I added a non-wi-fi Mitsubishi AC to Home Assistant
Research it with an LLM. I've ordered all the stuff for Panasonic and Daikin after a deep planning session. It told me what connectors I need that Panasonic needs a level shifter. Both brands have open source libraries for the internal protocols and wiring. I wanted Zigbee so the ESP32 C6 was the way to go. The Panasonic units I have already have Wifi but most companies suck at this kind of thing. I couldn't get the Panasonic Wifi to pair with my router. Daikin also sell Wifi modules and people don't to like them.

Remember that time when NSA director James Clapper reassured us they're not the baddies.

"Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?"

"No, sir."

pampas··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Easy. One end in each box.
pampas··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Thanks for the help. I ran it on high and it did pretty well and got a lot of one-shots in. The reasoning makes a much bigger difference than some other models.
pampas··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Yes. I've just run it on high and it did a lot better.
pampas··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
Great point. I've changed the naming.
pampas··on iPhone Duo
The mini had awful battery life and that's why it wasn't liked.
pampas··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash
I've run some evals on my puzzle game https://redactle.net/llm-leaderboard

Deepseek v4.1 flash is able to solve it some of the time. I've found it burns through more reasoning tokens than any other model. Google models like Gemini 3.8 Flash are still dominating and is able to one-shot most evals while being the cheapest.

I'm curious what other unique evals people are running.

It's not about US consumers but international trade. The US likes taxing the world's B2C activity.
pampas··on iPhone Duo
Modern phones are all phablets and it sucks but it's the only format they offer. Smaller phones are nicer to hold and nicer to use for everyday tasks. My thumb can actually reach things. At least AI will no doubt reduce the need for pressing buttons.

Manufacturers want phones to be thin so the only way to fit in the battery life is for the whole phone to be larger. In case you didn't notice it's really really difficult to find a side on photo of the iPhone Duo closed. They don't want to show the thickness.

pampas··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
The lack of support is why all the publishers I know give some third party SSP a hefty cut of their revenue just for support. Trying to get any non-wordy website like a tool or game approved is infuriating because they want blog spam.
pampas··on AirPods 5
I'd happily buy the older versions for less. Which is why they don't allow that.
pampas··on AirPods 5
They're so expensive you won't be buying many and that's great for the environment.
pampas··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
The Target marketing team famously could predict when a woman is pregnant but it was too creepy to, uh, Target them with only baby goods in dynamic marketing materials so they would mix in a few masculine things like lawn mowers into the catalog. No idea if that is what Meta is doing here but it's one explanation.
pampas··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
I watched the video and they're barely really trying to hide it. It reads some emails and immediately looks for stuff to advertise to the humans. Imagine how biased it will be once enshitification begins.

When the Google source code leaked it became clear a lot of the ranking boiled down to one big appeal to authority.

Registering domains on Cloudflare is great. They do it at cost as far as I can tell and more tlds have been added. I don't have to use a nasty local registrar with dark patterns anymore.
pampas··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
I see the same thing with advertising. The cost of a banner ad in real life is always decreasing. Now every road intersection, shop aisle, plane seat etc has a huge super bright billboard blasting ads at people who can't realistically avoid it.

No politicians are going to fight a media company. They're in the PR and advertising supply chain.
pampas··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
It's like a thread tying together two halves; Demand and supply. One stitch breaks and the neighbouring stitch is stressed and it breaks too. You could think of it like a load bearing seam.
pampas··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Plan approved – I'll start a background agent to create the app using react and npm.
pampas··on GPT-6 Astra
The load bearing seam is broken for me too.
pampas··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Hang on — I can apply a double tracked fix to the load bearing path, gated by provenance.
