pajju··on Google Web Designer
Yes, they are.

One of the other purposes of Advertisements are also to create impressions and Branding. You don't have to necessarily click every ad. :)

And with such visual tools ad making is very easy and reachable to all. A great project by Google. Kudos. With Visual tools like this we can interact with more depth. And lets not forget this is free too.

They might bring better ad-making experience overtime with built in ad-templates. All this will bring more Appealing ads.

And Eye catching ads serve as — Branding and Brand-remembering for Publishers, users notice them and remember(clicks not important in Branding)

pajju··on Google Web Designer
Yes, this looks as a perfect tool for ads — esp to create more appealing, eye-catching effects.

But its Branded as Google Web Designer. :)

pajju··on Big-O notation explained by a self-taught programmer
What you said is not very correct too! Big O tells about the "order of Growth of a function or the Growth rate", that's it. It gives a larger view of the function. Seeing from 1000 feet above the ground.

Link: http://web.mit.edu/16.070/www/lecture/big_o.pdf

My understanding --

A bounding function is when we know the exact function and its end-points from an algorithm. We know the extremes. i.e C1 and C2. i.e a Function falls within that boundary, it will always stay within that box(end-points). C1 and C2 are 2 lines, making a rectangle.

- Worst case, Best case, average case are different input cases, under which the algorithm grows in different ways. And we use BigO notation to classify them under easier functions, based on the order of Growth of a function.

And unless we don't know that exact function, its not possible to predict for any input variables. So don't call Big O as any bounding function, unless we know c1 and c2 <end bounds>.

- Big O is a notation that characterizes functions according to their growth rates.

- Different functions with the same growth rate may be represented using the same O notation.

- The letter O is used because the growth rate of a function is also referred to as order of the function. A description of a function in terms of big O notation usually only provides an upper bound on the growth rate of the function.

pajju··on Verizon backs Ubuntu smartphone
I don't like the way there are going with Network operators. Depending on a network operator is adding bloatware and less control, more fragmentation and hardware innovation.

Rather, How about they start a fund raising campaign or a Kickstarter - use a crowd-funding platform?

I will love to pay them.

Just to add: I'm mind blown after I switched to Ubuntu a year back. They already have numerous fans like me and Professional users, enterprises who trust them now, even the Server editions.

I would love to see Ubuntu grow independently! Go Ubuntu go, raise money, grow fast.

pajju··on Notes on computer science, math, research, programming, and industry
Excellent I loved your product and the direction its moving.

We are working on a similar concept.

We aim to predict - Customer behaviors based on a function of their Geography, previous CRM notes, tags, liking and tastes. We call that as Interest-Graph and store them as nodes. We identify patterns.

We don't focus on leads; as we don't have much data. Rather repeat buyers, these are previous customers. We try to predict buying-behaviors from data in structured, unstructured sources, papers, CRM's and ERP.

So far we are able to predict: what campaigns might work on a group of customers, based on our graph data.

pajju··on Client won’t pay, my final resort
One simple way to avoid such payment issues is - always host code in your servers.

- Make things clear in the start, the workflows and Billing process.

- If you get small hints of late payments or slow payments, just stop the work for some time.

- Keep Milestones and proceed one step at a time. We follow checklists with all our clients at ninjaas.com

- Only after your final payments are cleared, consider moving code-base to the production servers or give them the access keys.

- Don't ever get nasty with any client.

If things got wrong, maybe it was your own mistake in the first place somewhere? You missed gathering requirements or something better be done next time to avoid such steps!

Finally Learn the process: We've learnt these things the hard way. There is no general formula. :)

Thanks for the detailed answer.

In what scenario can this be used?

pajju··on 21 Months In: How to Manage a Remote Team
Startup != company.

Have you worked in a startup environment?

In any early stage startup, you need to be ready to roll out your sleeves and ready to do anything awesome in the interest of your team.

This might be getting new leads, contracts, deals or whatever. This is how all great companies started.

This should be the attitude.

And please don't say - I'll only do this and not that. I will never hire you or work alongside such minds.

Its the role of founders and early team to nurture the project and processes.

Startups are very low on budget and can't spend $$ for sales or MBA heroes. Today developers can write a great blog article and attract customers in your niche.

Note: We are all full-stack developers and completely bootstrapped. We have failed and learnt things the hard way so far. Once things are setup we have plans to invest/hire dedicated staff. We believe in training and making them align with our vision.

I think you might have never worked in a startup, so you don't get the idea and feel of it. :)

pajju··on 21 Months In: How to Manage a Remote Team
We too are a remote team at ninjaas.com.

I admire startups which open-source their - workflows, tools, processes and philosophies. They must be having really-really-big heart! :)

In our case, we are currently just Ramen Profitable. All our team members are remote, in the same time-zone.

Many small startups don't care much to invest in bringing Greater workflows, Processes and tools.

I keep telling to my co-founder - the hardest part in company building is setting up Processes, tools and workflows -- the Nurturing phase. It takes lots of gut, time and patience to explore and fix workflows, tools.

From my experience so far -

+ Any remote work sits on top of love for the work. I must love the job. Job satisfaction.

+ There must be a sense of ownership, reward and instant gratification. All other things like responsibility, Trust, faith comes on top of that.

+ Remote teams need highest levels of Communication clarity, Protocols and aligning with the Product vision. Communication tools are important. We use Google+ Private communities.

So, what if you are an idea-Stage/early-stage? If its an Idea and still not a concrete product? Then remote teams can't collaborate easily and brainstorm. We've found it very hard.

Also for Remote teams - Everyone should be doing support, sales, marketing, pitching, writing cool articles and almost full-stack work. Overall a Generalist attitude. This brings more clarity, responsibility and leadership overtime.

Finally as you said - The biggest wins aren't usually found in any blog posts or comments like mine, but in what you discover on your own, over time.

So keep exploring and don't stop! :)

pajju··on Nginx for Developers: An Introduction
We are moving to SoftLayer or Hetzner.

They do more granular level monitoring to detect faulty hardware early and replace them faster.

Also greater technical support, having used both of them previously.

pajju··on Nginx for Developers: An Introduction
Avoid using Digital Ocean(DO).

We had very very bad experience with them, file-system corruption, hardware failures.

And we are still unable to recover all our data. And so far, no hope!

They don't answer any of the questions properly, my team is very upset. We felt, they don't have much technical expertise in managing servers.

DO might be okay for testing and learning, but never use them for any production setups.

Update: we are still struggling to get our data back. No hopes so far.

We shall write a detailed blog post on the whole experience with Digital Ocean.

pajju··on Building a Modern Computer from First Principles
You start with a simple Nand Gate, then build the hardware, ALU, RAM, assembler, compiler, OS and finally build the Tetris Game. Remember all this runs on your own self-designed computer — hardware + software, all your work! Awesome once in a lifetime experience project.

Here's how it goes — You are just given a Nand Gate, you then construct other gates and complex logic from that Nand Gate. Then you build computer's basic processing and storage devices (ALU and RAM, respectively). Then next Stage you build an assembler and compiler for your own defined language. ;) Finally a High level language(jack) is implemented to run on your machine architecture. Then you build an OS for your machine. Jack OS.

And In the last step you build your first application, Tetris Game. ;) Remember it is running on your own self-built computer. ;)

This is one of the most well-thought self-learning Projects out there to build a computer from first principles. Kudos for the creators. Pure Bliss.

My experience — You get the feel and appreciate the project as you move up and also later in your life. Its a life-long experience.

If you are a college student, having a mentor helps a lot in understanding and appreciating concepts faster. Worth mentioning, this is one of the best gifts you can give for a curious soul who has just stepped into computers.

I rate this project very high, and the best self-learning project of all time.

pajju··on Assange in 2011: "They have automated the process."
+ We haven't committed any crime — then there's nothing to worry! And so spying on certain accounts is fine, if they need to investigate, track and analyze data for Intelligence.

+ I'm perfectly fine if they take my data — till its serving in the good interests of my family and people's safety.

+ It should only be in the good interests of our system and society.

+ But such credible data, should not be misused by the govt bodies or elected representatives!

Yeah its now combined to be 15GB for all Google products.
pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
Yeah, the doublr plans are not consistent with the lower 1TB plan.

Now this is like -- 1TB online storage = 450$/year, doesn't make sense now.

pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
Yahoo is looking fresh again!

I think this a well-thought idea to -- get more social.

Also with this move, it might push Google users to consider syncing and sharing their photos to Flickr now. Google gives 5GB for high-resolution, i.e original quality photos, Yahoo is giving 1TB, but think yahoo ads.

Any such kind of service is a lock-in ( platform level, so more control) and maybe they integrate tumblr strongly with photos? ( again a deeper lock-in to yahoo only core-products).

All this means -- they are back into Internet business.

From the past 2 days, there were enormous analysis around Yahoo, its principles were questioned, so did this all reach the board and the top management? :)

pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
I did not find it strange.

You get 1TB extra i.e total 2 TB + no ads.

Some interesting observations -- the cost of Free account for Yahoo is -- 450$ per free-user/year.

So, lets be prepared to get ads all around. :)

pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
1 TB is a lot of space for free-accounts, very generous move!

So, will they get more traffic now?

pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
So they must be editing those pages in real-time then! All those pages and occurrences across their site. ;)
pajju··on Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space
As per the new plans, there is no 300MB/month upload-limits on free-accounts.( please don't see Google search results, was that cached? )

Here are their newer plans --

Free-Accounts:

+ 1 Terabyte of photo and video storage

+ Upload photos of up to 200MB per photo

+ Upload 1080p HD videos of up to 1GB each

+ Video playback of up to 3 minutes each

+ Upload and download in full original quality

Ad-Free accounts: (older pro-accounts are gone!)

+ $49.99 per year

+ All the benefits of a free account

+ No ads in your browsing experience

Doublr-Plan(extra 1 TB space):

+ $499.99 per year

+ 2 Terabytes of photo and video space

+ You get all the benefits of the free account

pajju··on Is Google turning Gmail into an App platform?
I just discovered these apps which extend Gmail's possibilities--

Look at Streak (http://streak.com),

Right Inbox (http://rightinbox.com).

ActiveInboxhq (http://www.activeinboxhq.com/index.php)

pajju··on Is Google turning Gmail into an App platform?
Yeah agreed. I remember the saying -- Be a bitch yourself, but don't be someone else's bitch. :)

Build and think platforms and API's. Not consume API's :)

pajju··on Is Google turning Gmail into an App platform?
Great read, and I'm expecting this to happen sooner too.

Think it something like -- the core-emailing is there within gmail, but extend the functionalities via services. Some external app uses to build services on top of emailing.

Something like -- Hootsuite on top of twitter, Hootsuite manages and adds value by its own apps.

Think: we have Gmail powered apps? A link on top like: my-installed-apps -- to easily navigate and find newer apps for your workflows.

pajju··on Rich desktop app for HTML/CSS authoring
Feedback:

1. Make this as a webapp. Should work anywhere, like gDocs! Think: Anyone can collaborate, so the ideas and possibilities are more.

BTW, Why did you go the platform way? any particular reason worth mentioning?

2. Have a forum for knowledgebase, to answer FAQ's, ideas and take new-questions. See OSQA or Askbot, might help you a lot in this direction.

3. Show your users, all the cool possibilities. Videos and use-cases matters most to convince anyone to try your app.

4. Get more templates, widgets(short-codes) and page-layouts. This will be cool to start-off!

Customer reviews and comments: http://codecanyon.net/item/duet-project-management/discussio...

+ Feedback:

1. I did not find any word on -- updates, documentation, support or future upgrades from the developer. These things are more important. Who will maintain this project on long-term? And that's why SAAS based offering sells.

2. Also without a trial, I will never buy a solution, self-hosted or SAAS! I need to use it often to know that its the best-fit for my workflows.

3. And this being a company's project-management tool, should be tried and tested well: stable, secure and should work perfectly out of the box! I don't want to put time in maintaining another project. :)

4. Lock-in? Is there an import or export option from-and-to Basecamp or others?
