padjo··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Wind farms are expected to a account for it and it is routinely included in cost calculations.
padjo··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
It's an onion Michael, how much could it cost, $9.41?
padjo··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Nah, Europe was a happy participant in Iraq 1. The trend from that to Iraq 2 to whatever the hell they're doing in Iran now is really clear.
padjo··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
This has been brewing since George W Bush. Obama made a valiant attempt at normalising relations with Europe but I don't think any future US president has any hope of reversing this now.
padjo··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Not all of the EU is in schengen, but we do have freedom of movement. Ireland for example is not in Schengen and never will be because of our travel arrangements with the UK.
padjo··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
I really don't think that describes my Mastodon experience. Twitter for people with a conscience would be more accurate.
padjo··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
I mean the Supreme Court made bribery legal in Snyder so it's hard to imagine why anyone would think corruption isn't rampant.
padjo··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
Well I guess this begs the question how do you implement this ban without checking ids?
padjo··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
The argument is that there are parents who are too stupid/lazy to enable parental controls on kids devices and society has a duty to protect kids even if their parents are negligent. Also, kids interact with other kids, so even if you do everything right your kids wind up with access/peer pressure through the kids with bad parents.

I dunno if I agree but I think that's the thrust of it.

padjo··on Hackers Had a Live Feed of Every ID Verification Company Scanned for over a Year
One third party, managed by a public contract, seems much better than a parade of third parties for every service you interact with though right?
padjo··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
I think this is a bit of a non sequitur. The government will still be able to throw you in prison in either scenario. They will also be able to compel disclosure of your records in either scenario. So the difference is really just that in the scenario where apple verifies your identity there's an additional actor in the mix over who you have zero influence. It seems strictly worse.
padjo··on Hackers had a live feed of every ID verification company scanned for over a year
Funny was just testing the pilot of the Irish Government Digital Wallet. Definitely seems like the way forward if we're intent on doing identity verification. I'd rather the government mediate this than a bunch of random 3rd parties.
padjo··on .name Termination
Who is running the show over at ICANN? How can this possibly be a reasonable thing for a registrar to do?
padjo··on Lion-man
What always strikes me is that someone, 40,000 years ago, using a pointy stone and some ivory, can make a better looking statuette than I could manage with the best modelling clay and tools available today.
padjo··on "IT WoRKs BeTter in the App "
If the lose isn't going to dramatically impact your financial wellbeing then insurance is always an irrational bet.

padjo··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Who exactly is robbing you blind? Could it be your own billionaire class?
padjo··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
The funny thing is I bet ending birthright citizenship is an amendment that could actually be passed. You don't have to be a virulent racist to think the context has changed when you can get almost anywhere in the world in about 24 hours.

(I'm not sure where I stand on it but I can at least see an argument for revisiting the question)

padjo··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
A service like GH will still show a daily usage pattern, often with a peak somewhere around 16:00 UTC when most of the US and Europe are at work.
padjo··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
I don't typically have sympathy for businesses that fail to deliver a service as advertised.

I can have sympathy for the humans caught in the crossfire but only managing one nine of availability on a commercial service is not acceptable.

padjo··on Peppermint oil reduces blood pressure by 8.48 mmHg in small study
Publish or perish mentality + difficulty funding a larger study is why this gets published. There's nothing particularly wrong with it as an exploratory study, the big problem is the lack of incentive to try to reproduce the results and publish the inevitable null result.
padjo··on Four Years Ago, a Crypto Boss Went Missing. Now His Successor Has
Scammers of a feather...
padjo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
I have looked at the stats. In the US the 1% own 31% of the wealth up from 23% in 1990. The 50-90% own 30% of the wealth down from 36% in 1990. The fact that their spending drives the economy is just more ammunition for better wealth redistribution.
padjo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Some people, others are capable of being grateful for what they have.
padjo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
You're point would make a lot more sense if you didn't say the richest people are not the richest people.
padjo··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Americans are upset about not having any money while being the richest and most powerful country in the world. They are throwing a temper tantrum about a world order they created and are the main beneficiary of.

Probably diagnostics and debugging.
padjo··on Is it all just vapourware?
I never claimed to agree with the marketing.
padjo··on Is it all just vapourware?
Yep, much like having access to a circular saw won't make me a carpenter, having access to an LLM won't make the average person a software engineer.
