padjo··on Is it all just vapourware?
Yep, much like having access to a circular saw won't make me a carpenter, having access to an LLM won't make the average person a software engineer.
padjo··on Mea Culpa – Dark Hours
I think we're at the point where people are making the opposite conclusion from the premise: Let's let the computer make the decision because then we can't be held accountable.
padjo··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Do you think the Trump administration really gives a damn about wildlife?

There is of course some danger to wildlife but compared to things like planes, cars and boats its pretty minimal and can be managed.

padjo··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
They could absolutely moderate this at scale. They would just make less money so they have no incentive to do that.
padjo··on The Golden Age of British Ice Cream
It's really not the same thing. The coating is significantly thicker and more closely resembles real chocolate.
padjo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
So your argument is that they could have won in an alternative reality where it was worth paying a much higher cost for victory, therefore they didn't lose?
padjo··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Eisenhower would be considered a woke commie by today's administration

If you set out to achieve an objective, but the enemy prevents you from achieving that objective, you lost.

Hydro has the benefit of being available at night when you're unlikely to be using your car.
padjo··on Europe EV Sales BEVs Jump 50% & Reach 26% Market Share
In fairness Norway does have ludicrous levels of hydro per capita which makes electricity very cheap.
padjo··on Linux desktop market share has hit over 10% in North America
StatCounter is a joke.
padjo··on Software for One
Two of my most commonly used apps are my personal nutrition and workout tracking apps. Vibe coded and hosted on a Raspberry Pi. They're exactly customised to my usage pattern so infinitely better than anything I could buy, and they cost me a few hours and a basic Claude subscription.
padjo··on BMW Spider-Man in-car advertising
Those things are at least well intentioned, and honestly the lane keeping has once or twice saved me from accidentally leaving my lane when distracted, which might have saved my life.

An ad for a spiderman movie has no upside and is another small step towards a Minority Report vision of the future.

padjo··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Yeah it was a disaster really.
padjo··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Funnily enough it was Infantino who lead the introduction of the Nations League.
padjo··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Most Irish people (save a few in Dublin) are basically Americans.
padjo··on Europe's fires are just the start
This post would make sense if we didn't live a world where the head of the most powerful country in the world says climate change is a scam.

Also, plenty of middle class, comfortable off people refuse to change their comparatively luxurious, king like lives even a little bit unless there is financial upside to them.

padjo··on PostgreSQL's MVCC is bad. So is everyone else's
I would say ignore them. It was well written an informative. Some people have just gone insane and see LLMs everywhere.
padjo··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
"It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words."

Is an evergreen take on Nolan's movies for me.

Wait 'till you hear about the special criminal court...
padjo··on Humans haven't stopped evolving
Countering the nonsense prevalent in a lot of evolutionary psychology counts as a big positive in my book.
padjo··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
If you thought Afghanistan was a disaster, Iran would be at least 10 times worse.

padjo··on Alphabet's cash burn raises alarm for Big Tech as AI spending climbs
Curious how you are responding to this? Are there viable alternatives you are moving budget to or are you just hostage to their new tactics?
padjo··on My car’s OTA update broke Android Auto
I've stopped installing software updates to my car. They never seem to do anything useful and often will cause things to break or get reset. I no longer see the upside.
padjo··on The Graph That Should Be Front-Page News
Cool, so what have you personally done to reduce your co2 emissions? How do your co2 emissions compare to the global average? Or are you just pretending the problem is other people?
padjo··on Datacentres drive up big tech's carbon emissions to a third of those of France
Building the nuclear power plants should solve the problem in about 50 years...
padjo··on What's the best way to do authentication in modern applications
> So the boring 2005 design wins.

As an old guy reading this I had a lot of wtf moments during the setup. Then I laughed pretty hard when we eventually got to this line. Like there's a reason we invented cookies and all mature web frameworks use them for auth.

padjo··on My thoughts on the Bun Rust rewrite
While there are some interesting nuggets of context in there we could have done without the passive aggressive tone and personal attacks.
padjo··on US seeks cheaper hunter-killer drones after Iran destroys $1B worth of Reapers
It's not rational. China has even less interest in invading the USA than the USA has in invading China. And I think the USA's interest is effectively zero.
