p4coder··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Agreed! I had to do a double take and check the URL. I thought I am reading a press release rather than actual reporting.
p4coder··on Google I/O
At the moment, I end up using AI mode only because the ads are not as prominent as the normal search.
p4coder··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
I am guessing that the Oman's share Homruz fees will also shared with Trump businesses (via loss making investments, or another plane etc)
p4coder··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Today morning, I was checking TSA wait times. Guess what, they want you to install their app to get the wait time. [1]

p4coder··on Goodbye to Sora
I also like doing that for topics that I am tangentially interested in. One minor thing that I find annoying is that the narrators switch roles in the middle of conversation. They start with the female voice explaining a concept to the male voice and suddenly they switch. In the meantime I have identified myself with the voice being explained to.
p4coder··on US- and Greek-owned tankers ablaze after Iran claims 'underwater drone' strike
The nation is one terrorist attack away from rallying behind the president. And sadly the chances of that happening have gone up significantly in recent days.
p4coder··on Anthropic disabled my account after payment cancer patient/medical data trapped
I think what we really need is Internet user's Bill of Rights. The power and information asymmetry is too great to obtain fair treatment for the user.
p4coder··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Unfortunately it is not browser based (as in being local HTML+CSS+js). It is web based, where they get all your data.
p4coder··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Yes, it is the unfortunate reality of the US. You either fork over all your data to tax preparation companies on the web or pay them to use windows/MacOS software. There is still paper filing by doing taxes by hand, but that's a bit too inconvenient. Free online filing is restricted to $89k annual income.
p4coder··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
How do you do taxes in Linux? Install a windows VM? I don't want to use the web version. With Google docs being good enough, I don't really need windows for anything else. Last time I checked, the tax software didn't run under wine.
p4coder··on Evaluating the impact of AI on the labor market: Current state of affairs
Only if you think living longer is bad. Till early 20th century, urban life expectancy was lower than rural life expectancy in Britain. It was dubbed urban penalty.

p4coder··on GLM-4.5: Agentic, Reasoning, and Coding (ARC) Foundation Models [pdf]
Sometimes getting a second pair of eyes to look at the problem helps and is usually not a judgement of smartness of the first pair of eyes. Seems like it also applies to coding agents.
p4coder··on Genie 3: A new frontier for world models
Today physical world is largely mechanized, we rarely walk, run lift heavy things for survival. So we grow fat and weak unless we exercise. Tomorrow vast majority of us will never think, create, investigate for earning a living. So we will get dumb and dumber over time. A small minority of us will keep polishing their intellect but will never be smarter than machines just like the best athletes of today can't outrun machines.
p4coder··on Material 3 Expressive
Hmm, works just fine on my pixel 6a in chrome.
p4coder··on Boycott IETF 127
It depends on your citizenship. Some European countries reject 50% Indian Schengen visa applicantions.

p4coder··on The question that no LLM can answer and why it is important
The future of AI might be layering of various capabilities: Generative+Lookup+Deductive. I think the human mind works in a similar way. First thought is reflected upon. We search our memory to get relevant information and often apply logic to see if it makes sense. I feel the generative AI just produces a thought. We need to pass that through a system that can augment it with search and then reason about it. Finally need to close the loop and update the weights.
p4coder··on How Dowries Are Fuelling a Femicide Epidemic
One justification for dowry that people asking dowry used to give was till 2005, the hindu inheritance law did not have a claim for daughters. So dowry was a way to get that inheritance in advance.
p4coder··on Tesla Again Paints a Misleading Story with Their Crash Data
After seeing ChatGPT and others hallucinate and make mistakes I was wondering if self-driving AI is inherently susceptible to similar behavior. Like hallucinating objects on the road and ignoring signs etc. If we can not fully understand these types of behavior for LLMs at a fundamental level, is the self-driving AI any different.

Of course, it may be that the LLM architecture makes them susceptible for this, but not self-driving AI. But the question still remains, do we understand enough about it to trust human lives to the AI?

p4coder··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
I think the charging network is going to prove to be the iMessage of Tesla. By keeping it closed, they will be selling many more cars. In Europe where they had to use the standard port and open the network, there will be much stiffer competition.
p4coder··on Rent going up? One company’s algorithm could be why
Rent increase has been one of the biggest contributor to core inflation [0]. That has caused fed to raised interest rate at a rapid clip and cause the market crash. So is an algorithm responsible for the blood on wall st?

p4coder··on Scientists who say the lab-leak hypothesis for SARS-CoV-2 shouldn't be ruled out
I think the following is much better paper on this topic. It discusses how the furin cleavage site occurs in lab and why ace2 binding could have emerged and why the virus was well adapted to ferrets right from the start. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7435492/
p4coder··on South Africa suspends rollout of Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine
Not exactly, but there is this [1] that shows how the binding strength varies with single amino acid change.

p4coder··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
This is a great thread [1] that goes through the IFR estimation and relative risk of dying due to COVID for various age groups. Bad news for me (45-54 age group) my risk of dying goes up to 1.7x if I get covid.

p4coder··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
I simply did percent_dead times num_dead/percent_cases times num_cases. That leads to ~0.5%. I agree with you that IFR is unknowable without very thorough sero-survey. So all we have is CFR to go on. The ratio depends on population age and test availability etc.
p4coder··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
My daughter's school has 2000 kids. 4000 parents. In Santa Clara county the death rate for 40-60 is .5% [1] That would mean 20 parents dead if everyone gets it. Many of the households in immigrant families are multi generational. That will have a multiplying effect.

[1] 12.7% deaths and 29.1% cases https://www.sccgov.org/sites/covid19/Pages/dashboard-demogra...

p4coder··on AT&T Fiber in the SF Bay Area is flipping bits
TCP checksum is simples one's complement checksum. So if two bits are flipped in the same position in two different 16 bit word, they cancel each other out. If you look at all the diffs posted, they differ in even number of lines.
