p1nkpineapple··on Light No Fire – A Fantasy Game from the Makers of No Man's Sky
I wonder if it is physically possible, nowadays, to just quietly launch a game without building up the necessary hype beforehand. In Hello Game's case, the community is so burned by the company that they are immediately distrustful when they announce something new (see the other comments, for example). What would have happened if they had just put it on the steam store? "Here's what we made, see for yourself if it's good".

Use the money saved from minimal marketing to build a better game. Heck, they'd get a lot of viral marketing for free anyway from the media companies falling over themselves to cover the surprising game release.

> As a consequence, my time spent on the site is way down, and the time I do spend is higher quality material.

For me, I've found DeArrow (clickbait "blocker") has had exactly the same effect. I find myself no longer mindlessly scrolling through the suggested feed and am more particular about what I choose to watch.

p1nkpineapple··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
I only ask this out of sheer curiosity - WTH are you building?

Fascinating! Is there anywhere where we can follow development of this?

p1nkpineapple··on RPG in a Box: A grid-based, voxel-style game engine built on Godot
Woops. Not sure how I missed that :D

Dann, that is a crazy amount of functionality built in to an indie project! Well done to the creator.

I notice the project is not open source. Do they plan on monetising it eventually?

p1nkpineapple··on Langchain Is Pointless
> Look at research in prompting: chain of thought, react, reflection, tree of thoughts, zero vs few hot etc. Then completion vs conversational interfacing. Then memory management via vector databases and prompt expansion vs compression vs progressive summarization etc.

Wow, that's a list of things that's completely new to me - thanks! Do you have any particular resources that you'd recommend for learning about these different topics?

p1nkpineapple··on Ask HN: What's a good, privacy focused bookmark manager?
I'm personally a big fan of Linkding [1]. You have to self host it, which means all the data stays local. I like the minimalist approach to the UI and there is a browser extension and (community created) mobile app [2]. Its also built on Django, which makes it pretty easy to manage/extend/modify.

Wristers (we call them "pulse-warmers" here) are AMAZING. My Grandmother-in-law spends her days knitting hundreds of these, and now we have multiple plastic bags full of fluffy multicolured pulse-warmers that we don't know what to do with.

If anyone her wants to pay the postage from NZ, I'll happily send them around the world for no cost :)

p1nkpineapple··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
"If you keep planning your whole life out like this, you're going to end up miserable".

I spontaneously proposed to my girlfriend last night. She said yes :)

p1nkpineapple··on An app can be a home-cooked meal (2020)
In my family home growing up, me and my sister had our bedrooms upstairs while the dining/living rooms were downstairs. When it was dinner time, my mother would yell out "Dinners ready!" up the staircase - often to deaf ears, as us young teens were pre-occupied with loud music, gaming or talking on the phone.

After coming down one-to-many times to a cold dinner, I developed my first "app" with MIT App Inventor - Dinners Ready, an app with three buttons: "kid A", "kid B", and a larger "Both". Pressing a button would send a simple text message saying dinner is ready.

My mum loved it. Suddenly she didn't have to worry about fruitlessly yelling to her distracted kids. I wouldn't have to rely on my grumbling stomach to come downstairs to an empty dining table with my food going cold. We used it for years, and she still brings it up from time to time. To this day it remains my most well-reviewed app with 100% happy users.

p1nkpineapple··on What makes a senior engineer? Writing software vs. building systems
As a junior with the regular high aspirations for career growth to Staff engineer/leadership, am I doing myself a disservice by orienting myself early in my career around "Systems thinking" (NFRs, requirements analysis, testing, observability etc as the article discusses), instead of focusing on the technical "code quality, best practises and cutting edge qualities"?
p1nkpineapple··on Launch HN: Dendron (YC W21) – Structured note-taking for developers and teams
Congrats on the launch!

I've been using Foam [1] for the last year, which is an open-source vscode-powered aternative to obsidian. There seems to be a large overlap in features. What benefits does Dendron have over Foam that would convince me to switch?
