What about the cartel? Have they punished Samsung and Hynix yet?
p0w3n3d··on How to Create a Tor Exit Node (2015)
I wonder, according to law, what are the outcomes of maintaining an exit node, apart from having, I quote, _balls of steel_

p0w3n3d··on The Post-AI Internet Doesn't Look Great
Is there no-AI internet? Like anti-nuclear shelters?
p0w3n3d··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
> it doesn't have an OS with a large market share feeding it users

Remember when Microsoft was sued for having installed one browser in their OS and making it default?

Now suddenly we're okay with another company installing another browser in their OS

p0w3n3d··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
GUIs used to be fully keyboard driven. At least old windows. You could do everything, and those things that were broken (no tab order etc) were accessible by numeric keypad's steered mouse (accessibility settings)
p0w3n3d··on Tell HN: PayPal blocks GrapheneOS
I wonder do you have administrator access on your Windows/Mac/Linux?

Because your argument sounds like you gave the admin password to someone else to prevent yourself from tampering with your computer for the security reasons

p0w3n3d··on Software engineering is about managing complexity
Sadly many managers decided to do so and the damage is done

I love to say that

Some managers didn't pass the Turing test
p0w3n3d··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
In numerical methods this is called error propagation. And since the neural networks are basically numerical approximations of a certain function, this shows apparent similarity of the propagation on a macro scale
p0w3n3d··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
This is quite a problem in London. I've been there recently and you really cannot go to toilet if not in a hotel office or a museum
p0w3n3d··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
My memories of windows 95 are very fond. I used to install it on Pentium 133 and boy it flew.

However the most wonderful thing about software written at that time was it was written with care and skill.

p0w3n3d··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Web enshittification should be disallowed in public offices. It's so easy to create a news entry in Facebook or Twitter/X but they are always walling you from it unless you subscribe. This is unacceptable in public service sector.
p0w3n3d··on HelloAssembly: The smallest possible complete Windows application (2021)
Looks too kinky for me. WinAPI + C - okay. But not this
p0w3n3d··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
It's for our safety, so when Kathy in the primary school steals Beatrice's picture in paint, miss Wallingford will tell who was the original author
p0w3n3d··on I built a low-latency AI companion that plays Skyrim with me
The voice of the companion is awesome.

I'm surprised how good the talk is (i.e. the voice recognition). My disabled brother is struggling with good native polish voice to text btw. If you people can recommend anything good or local

p0w3n3d··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
Thanks! That's quite important information worth saving

p0w3n3d··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Maybe that's why they are doing it on the airport which is extraterritorial
p0w3n3d··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Sadly both Google and Apple allow this only when using the cloud... You even can't configure your own cloud provider for the backup
p0w3n3d··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore

Lol got my mac M5 128GB I'll import a JS framework for multiplying numbers
Careless coding has been introduced by people saying "programmer's pension is more than double the RAM" but it is no longer the case. The windows UI could occupy 30MB at most. But they chose differently
p0w3n3d··on People sick, 57 hospitalized in 32 states courtesy of contaminated jalapeños
Many people no longer know what SCO was and what fuss did it in Linux world
p0w3n3d··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi

Big companies will read up the books and make their AI recite them from memory, but Archive.org was sued for renting one book on an exclusive basis (unless one would return, another wouldn't be able to rent)

p0w3n3d··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
In my country there are two parties always being elected. Quite similar to US system. It's always first saying "elect us, otherwise second will win" and the second saying the opposite.

Asymptotically those parties go the same way, but always introducing new laws that improve oppression-style control, explaining that those others must be controlled. And the voters accept the solution, but do not understand that the next year the second party will come and use the solution.

I don't know if you get what I'm saying without the context but this is exactly the case: imagine police state appearing in your country. Does the law help them or are you still free

p0w3n3d··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
First - it's great that people can't take screenshots of their sensitive data by accident

Second - I hate when my device keeps me from anything. I'm used to have control over my computer, and this is outrageous that I can't take screenshots of anything I want. There should be a god mode or something like that.

p0w3n3d··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
Spies. Spies everywhere
p0w3n3d··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
for lyme disease? Can you share which?

I believe in my country this is treated differently...

p0w3n3d··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
According to evidence based medicine, infected tick's bite is not equal to infection of the patient. It means that the test can be false positive and based solely on it, people would start exhausting treatment for nothing
p0w3n3d··on Google is making private AI practical with homomorphic encryption
That's not what I meant. I meant botnet taken over by Google
p0w3n3d··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Yeah I find the phone-taken images much worse than camera-taken even despite the astonishing number of megapixels and amount of technologies promised in the phones nowadays. Sadly most people don't buy the camera because it's too expensive and you need prepare yourself to take it with you (so the most photos are taken instantly with the phone)
