p0d··on How to Create Presentations in Markdown
I like using Marp.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is there a GUI for bash shell?
Maybe you should make one? Slack to me is IRC. I imagine there is mileage in giving the world Bash in a more usable fashion.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is programming a drug?
I resinate with the joy of making things and building castles in the air, thank you. I very occasionally write poems, so I get the thought-srtuff.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is programming a drug?
This is very helpful, thank you. I am in my 50s, so heading your direction. I observe in my friend's parents the importance of keeping the mind active. I am fortunate to have such a fun way of solving puzzles.
p0d··on Ask HN: Read the Docs Like a Book?
I guess I was hoping for something that would work offline like my kindle and also equally responsive. The epub readers I use seem very slow...however, I'm starting to wonder if the slow is related to the size of most documentation.
p0d··on Ask HN: Other than VS Code, are there any good IDEs for remote development?
The remote tools in VS Code are amazing. I rememer text editors and filezilla.

I also recently discovered with the docker extension I can see inside containers in VS Code. Not exactly breaking news I am sure but I am one who is slow to change my ways.

p0d··on Ask HN: What's the best way to exit tech?
I left tech at 49 and became a lecturer. It's a bank holiday here in Ireland and I write this from a cafe, following a nice walk. Enough said.
p0d··on Write for others but mostly for yourself (2022)
My blog has been private for twenty years. I have honed a lot of my thinking down to several bullet points. For example, how to manage my finances and save.

It is also a great way to record goals and their outcomes. I strikethrough completed life goals as a kind of version control.

p0d··on Brits left baffled by Brexit's 'not for EU' food labels
I am from Northern Ireland at the heart of this confusion. I think Veda Bread should be marked as Not For EU. I am sure this alone would encourage immigration to our little island.
p0d··on My SaaS Journey from $1000/Mo Heroku to Home Server
My app doesn't drive enough concurrent traffic for me to worry about load.

The worst part is that things run so smoothly it makes me to lazy to do updates and check in as much as I should.

My main pull to Hetzner cloud followed having a good experience of their dedicated servers in my last job. Coupled with a fixed price for vms. I think the monthly traffic limit is 20tb. I'm nowhere near that

p0d··on My SaaS Journey from $1000/Mo Heroku to Home Server
My last job was working for a growing saas company and this means security questionnaires and compliance. Your home server and environment wont tick many boxes.

I have been running my own small saas on Hostgator then Hetzner for the last 17 years. Go for cheap cloud servers. I currently pay £20 per month for £1000mrr

p0d··on Ask HN: Are You Happy?
Yes.

I walked with my son a few days ago and had coffee.

Yesterday I went for a walk with my daughter and had lunch. In the evening I had dinner with a friend.

Tonight I will walk to the ice-cream parlour with my wife.

Happiness is found in the simple things.

p0d··on Ask HN: What have you made with Raspberry Pi?
I'm using a pi as a firewall between my house and a 30 meter ethernet cable to my shed.

I wanted ethernet to my shed but found that physical security of ethernet was a little pricey. I'm using an old pi, a cheap ethernet dongle I got in lild in a sale and ipfire to create an isolated network in the shed.

p0d··on Ask HN: Advice for a new father?
Thank you. I thought that among the cereberal answers I would try and communicate that new parents shouldn't worry too much. The fact the op is asking for input is already an indication of their care and concern.
p0d··on Ask HN: Advice for a new father?
I have two flourishing adult children. Here are some things from experience not to do;

* Do not accidentally drop them on their head * Do not accidentally dislocate their elbow. * Do not put their shoes on the wrong feet when taking them for a walk. * Do not put them on a snow sleigh on a steep hill with a river at the bottom. * Do not neglect them in a bookshop while reading computer books and then turn to watch them being dragged heavenward up the outside of an escalator to the next floor.

And things to do;

* If a Father/Daughter * Do not make fun of her, even as a baby, baby girls understand more than you think * When she is an older girl buy her a beautiful pair of shoes/boots of her choice. She will not forget it. * If a Father/Son * When he can walk take him to the forest and let him choose a stick. * When he is older teach himself how to defend himself e.g. someone grabs him by throat, stamp on their foot.

When they are in their 20s; * If they live in the same city go for a walk/coffee with them every week or two.

Family is all about walking, talking, eating and playing. Work is about paying the bills. Service is what we do for others.
p0d··on Ask HN: What are you reading Feb 2024
Impossible Creatures, Katherine Rundell. I am 52 and haven't had as much fun since reading The Hobbit, 40 years ago.
p0d··on Ask HN: What tool to choose for network structure and setup documentation
In my last job we used hugo and git for it's simplicity. We shared the repo among the infrastructure team and enjoyed working with text files.

The quality of the information stored trumps the whizzo way of sharing it in my opinion.

p0d··on Ask HN: How to know what you want to do for the rest of your life.
An 80yr old told me the third job is the good one.
p0d··on Ask HN: Small business owners on HN. How do you do your accounts?
Xero and give accountant access
p0d··on Ask HN: Why aren't any of my classes taught by my instructors anymore?
In education creating content is hard work. In business marketing and sales is hard work. So others get paid to sort the problem with varying results. We are obsessed these days with pushing problems on to others for an easier life, when often a better job could be done locally.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is there a Google Form like solution for Dropbox?
I ended up running with Google Forms and using rclone to sync the data to Dropbox. I use rclone anyway for backups, so should have thought of this in the first place.

I continue to use Google products but I am determined not to rely on any of their services in case they "go away". I know with this solution I will always have my data.

p0d··on Ask HN: Is there a Google Form like solution for Dropbox?
Thanks, looks interesting, having a look now.
p0d··on Ask HN: Is there a Google Form like solution for Dropbox?
Had a try, there didn't seem to be an option to collect the data in csv/spreadsheet. If there was I missed it.
p0d··on Ask HN: Techies, how do you keep yourself physically engaged?
I walk 3 miles a day, takes about 45-50 minutes.
p0d··on Ask HN: 2023 lookback retrospective what are your takeaways from this year?
I built a shed office in my back garden. My garden is sloped. I was working on the roof trim of the shed up a ladder and it gave way. I hadn't been careful enough that the ground was level. I fell from about shoulder height and landed on my shoulders, from behind.
p0d··on Ask HN: 2023 lookback retrospective what are your takeaways from this year?
One key takeaway is Barcelona is great, going back next summer.

Another is think carefully every time your feet leave the ground. I fell off a ladder and was ok, but I could have broken my neck.

p0d··on Ask HN: Show Your Homelab and Home Server Setup for Inspiration
I have been running a server in the attic for 20yrs, now relocated to the shed (not the same hardware).

I am getting a lot of joy out of vnc connect at the moment. I have ethernet to my shed with a pi firewall between my attic and the garden. VNC connect means I don't need to pfaff about with port forwarding etc.

I use rclone to sync my saas business backups from the server to the cloud. That may not sound secure but I used to be an Infrastructure Lead and I have seen how government agencies left doors open in data centre cages.

One piece of advice. Don't waste all your holidays on such projects, pace yourself :-)

p0d··on Ask HN: What's your self-care routine?
I walk to either the gelato shop, or cake shop, on a Friday night, and partake in one or the other. Love is measured in coffee cups and dessert.
p0d··on Ask HN: What email service are you using these days?
Fastmail with Gmail as the client.

I don't trust the long term viability of Google products anymore, including Gmail.

I love that fastmail can handle any.name@my.domain

p0d··on 16-year-old Looking For Guidance
The learning for me has been to solve existing problems. Maybe create something that solves a problem for yourself or someone in your family? You will be surprised how happy the average person is when you make something that makes their life easier.
