oznathan··on A Guide to Fully Homomorphic Encryption
FHE will probably take a while to become practical. Remember, the first schema was published only in 2009, which is very recent in cryptography standards.

Secure multi-party computation can achieve similar objectives (compute on encrypted data-sets), but is much more mature research-wise (first schema dates back to the 70s) and can be practical for large algorithms today. See http://enigma.media.mit.edu/ (disclosure - I'm one of the founders)

oznathan··on Enigma: Decentralized Computation Platform with Guaranteed Privacy [pdf]
Yes, that is exactly the case. The idea is to let 3rd parties use the data without ever having direct access to it. They can't reconstruct it, and only get the result of the computation.

Thanks Tal!
oznathan··on MIT's Bitcoin-Inspired 'Enigma' Lets Computers Mine Encrypted Data
Hi, co-creator here.

1) More electricity it used, but it has some benefits. What is the social and financial cost of data breaches and identity theft? Hopefully at scale a system like Enigma can help with that.

2) At scale, you are correct. Blockchain scaling is a problem that a lot of people are working on, hopefully it will be solved in one way or another. If it doesn't, we'll need to find another solution or Enigma will fail.

oznathan··on Show HN: Stochastic – JavaScript library for simulating stochastic processes
Awesome, going to use it in my trading bot. Thanks!
oznathan··on Fraudulent trading activity at Mt. Gox
Unfortunately every market is highly manipulated... And in any market you deal with people who have more information than you. The game is trying to understand the manipulation.
oznathan··on Fraudulent trading activity at Mt. Gox
I lost some money there too, I've been their customer since 2011.

But if the main reason for the April and November bubbles is Willy, than the current (amazing) state of bitcoin is thanks to him.

oznathan··on Fraudulent trading activity at Mt. Gox
I don't think the bot is responsible for either bubble.

But, if it was, the bitcoin world owes everything to Mark Karpeles. Because of the price surges it got all the media attention, VC investments, hundreds of companies popping up, millions of users...

oznathan··on Passports for Bitcoin
Yeah he's a bad investor..

don't hate mate.

oznathan··on Passports for Bitcoin
Richard Branson just invested millions in Bitpay, a bitcoin company. You should tell him it's dead!!
oznathan··on The Spectacular Failure Of Better Place
The real reason is because Shai Agassi, a 0.001 percentile guy, was beaten by Elon Musk, a 0.0000001 percentile guy.

oznathan··on My low-paying, early-morning, exertion-requiring job
Accuracy is so important in HN :)

Fact - cycling creates short leg muscles, hamstrings in particular. For those of us who have tight hamstrings, which is most males (according to my subjective, biased observations), this is not good. Creates back problems later on.

I agree that some cycling is better than no activity. But I would say that going to a hooker every night is also better for you health wise than staying in and watching tv, as long as you wear at least 2 condoms.

oznathan··on My low-paying, early-morning, exertion-requiring job
If you asked nicer I would have googled it for you, but you can do that yourself.
oznathan··on My low-paying, early-morning, exertion-requiring job
Right, but in other activities if you practice safely and under professional supervision you can usually minimize the risk. Here the movement is short and repetitive which in turn builds short muscles. It's a "feature", not a corner case "bug".
oznathan··on My low-paying, early-morning, exertion-requiring job
Cycling is actually not that healthy. Repetitive short movements shorten your muscles, which causes all kinds of problems.
oznathan··on Square Market Accepts Bitcoin
You should wait until Paypal accepts bitcoin to say that.
oznathan··on Waze Co-Founder Skips Google to Try Startup World Again
Uri wasn't full-time at Waze for a while now.. he co-founded Feex almost 2 years ago, and he's also not full time there. He does a lot of angel investments. I don't think that him joining Google was every a possibility.
oznathan··on Waze Co-Founder Skips Google to Try Startup World Again
They did a successful pilot in Israel this past year. A lot of people use them and saved significant amounts of money. They use the Waze founder for PR but he is not the real story, the service is.
oznathan··on Could keybase.io do for crypto what GitHub did for Git?
I can't store the key myself and I wouldn't want to. I can create it myself but it's stored in a central key server.
oznathan··on Could keybase.io do for crypto what GitHub did for Git?
If they hold your key, your privacy can be violated. By them, by someone who buys the company or by a secret government court order.
oznathan··on Could keybase.io do for crypto what GitHub did for Git?
If I were them I would market more the online identity verification aspect and not mention one word about crypto or GPG.

Also, I don't like the choice of a centralized solution for privacy problem. It could have been decentralized.

oznathan··on Mt. Gox Finds 200,000 Missing Bitcoins
People "assumed" about that 200k wallet over a month ago. "Proven" is subjective and a rhetoric that has agenda on its own.
oznathan··on Mt. Gox Finds 200,000 Missing Bitcoins
Check the bitcoin reddit. Everybody knows about that 200k btc for weeks. There is evidence they have about 300k more.
oznathan··on Mt. Gox Finds 200,000 Missing Bitcoins
Their official announcement is even more ridiculous. https://www.mtgox.com/img/pdf/20140320-btc-announce.pdf

The have more coins and there is evidence for that in the blockchain. Many people know about that for weeks. After they figured people were on to them they released this lie.

Nobody just forgets about 200,000 btc.

oznathan··on Mt. Gox Files for Bankruptcy Protection
No one stole anything from them. Or at least not something remotely close to what is reported. How can 800k btc go missing?

Even people with few hundred btc split them between several different offline wallets. Can't be stolen. Their hot wallet being hacked is a total possibility, but it would contain no more than 5% of their coins. So, they just emptied the cold storage until it was completely empty?

No.

Something else is going on and we will all know soon enough. Don't let yourselves be manipulated like that.

oznathan··on Gmaxwell's “prove how (non)-fractional your Bitcoin reserves are” scheme
Bitstamp have proved their good intentions and competence. They also have the most to lose at this point as the market leader. Had zero problems with transfers from there, very quick support replies, seem to be in good relations with their bank. I trust them. Karaken also look promising, but it's a new exchange.

Anyway, best bet is to use several exchanges to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities and to distribute the risk.

oznathan··on Ask HN: Why are nasty comments more common on HN?
This comment was actually to an article I wrote. Here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6828726

I don't believe that it was trolling.

oznathan··on Ask HN: Why are nasty comments more common on HN?
I agree.

Also, a lot of people with positive reaction just upvote an article. If you consider upvotes as positive comments, the ratio is way different.
