ozlikethewizard··on German Bundeswehr Uses AI to Screen Applicants for Right-Wing Extremism
The original article uses right wing extermism as an example, but the description of the system translates to "constitutional fidelity". So its probably safe to assume that this will be looking for any kind of extremism that could be anti-constitutional. Always important to remember from a german perspective that it was the communists and socialists that held the line of resistance and were some of the first to be oppressed during the rise of the nazi regime, whatever your views on the politics are.
ozlikethewizard··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
When did my car being able to navigate become a critical function?
ozlikethewizard··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
I mean I think were agreeing, in a body of text this size I'd expect to see the dramatic short sentences and standalone dramatic sentence maybe one or twice. This article they are constant. They're great devices were used appropriately, but when the whole body of text reads like it it's awful.

Not asking anyone to stop using those writing devices, just begging for any work to not be exclusively dramatic devices. And when you read a piece of work like that its generally a child or AI lol.

ozlikethewizard··on Palantir's Co-Founder Wants Us Less Judgmental About Deadly Iran School Strike
This is hilarious, its the schools fault it got blown up. Talk about victim blaming.
ozlikethewizard··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
GB news is slop, you get to decide if you're misinformed or malicious.

The victims fine was overturned and the attacker was convincted, justice system working as intended: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9v7wlj3pr2o

Hasan is still not British.

ozlikethewizard··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
Its gaining popularity in the UK and is starting to show up sporadically, but the opiod epidemic provided pretty extreme fuel to start the fire in America. No idea if itll ever take off here to the extent heroin did, depends on the economy I guess.
ozlikethewizard··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
That Hasan guy is American right? Unsurprisingly British laws need not apply.

I don't think that statement would go down too well here, but even then context is very important for incitement to violence. Considering people were and did set fire to hotels I think it was worthwhile investigating.

ozlikethewizard··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Doesn't 'Force Majeure' mean exceptional events outside ones control? Pretty sure everything involved here is Oracles own making lol
ozlikethewizard··on Moving from cash to credit cards, PayPal, etc. is an ongoing privacy disaster
We just shitting on one of the last bastions of hacker culture for mobile tech now then? When did HN get such a taste for the boot?
ozlikethewizard··on I Don't Like LLMs
Could have installed libretorrent in about 12 seconds network dependent. Feels kinda like classic LLM obsession. You've used it to "save you time" in a problem that didnt need solving. Big part of engineering used to always be knowing what you didn't need to build something for as well
ozlikethewizard··on I Don't Like LLMs
What were you paying for?
ozlikethewizard··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
Somewhat tangential but is "most secure consumer mobile device" actually correct? Does an iPhone beat out a grapheneOS android, or would that not be considered consumer because of aftermarket changes? Seems like a pretty bold claim but I know apple is pretty damn good with security (as long as you dont count Apple as a security risk themselves)
ozlikethewizard··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
Houthi's were also recently active against Israeli assets as Palestinian solidarity. Another situation that could not have happened without US intervention (support in this case).
ozlikethewizard··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
The houthis are part of Iran's 'Axis of resistance' and have also publicly stated one reason for their recent increase in activity being Palestinian solidarity.

Given the Iran war and Israels genocide only being possible through US support I'd say the US has a pretty big hand in the matter.

ozlikethewizard··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
I think mandatory voting is only reasonable if their is an official spoil option that should trigger something if selected enough. The outcome is tricky in parliamentary/party based systems, as if you have a revote just going to end up with the same parties, but I also think its quite undemocratic to force someone to participate and therefore tacitly support a system that may be screwing them. In a democracy no one should be forced to pick between (what they consider) terrible options.
ozlikethewizard··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
Ah yea, because the problem is hard we shouldn't try to fix it we should all just burn instead
ozlikethewizard··on Coding Is Over. Get over It
I'm still waiting for no code developments platforms to make me redundant.
ozlikethewizard··on Coding Is Over. Get over It
It's been tomorrow for an awfully long time now. Does it feel like the quality of software has got better or worse in the last few years? Is larger quantities of worse software really want we want to optimise for as an industry?
ozlikethewizard··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
Right all those people protesting outside data centres are bureaucrats? This is a ridiculous take, large swaths of the population are against AI, most people are concerned about resource use, their livelihoods, and a destruction of the human element in so many crafts.
ozlikethewizard··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
and murder is illegal but people still get got. "Some people will bypass it" is not a valid reason to not have a rule.
ozlikethewizard··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
Thought this was going to be about the impending global food crisis. Largely less concerned about automatiom when global harvest output was absolutely shattered this year and isn't likely to be much better next year.

Can't eat data centres.

ozlikethewizard··on There Gonna Be a Shortage of Everything
GDP per capita is not an effective measure of the economic quality of the average person though. If growth is centralised in the hands of the few, then sure per capita goes up but most peoples access to increased wealth does not.

Look at something like HDI instead, US actually down over the past ~decade:

ozlikethewizard··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
This is actually hotspot rollouts as far as I know though? You dont see BT/EE wifi networks everywhere, particularly not where you'd expect to see a concentration like residential streets / buildings with this kind of system, mainly see BT / O2 hotspots in public spaces like train stations + event spaces.

Tbf may just be less monopolisation of broadband making it more sparse, but they actually have a map of hotspots on that site which implies they are intentionally placed.

ozlikethewizard··on A third of Perplexity's citations don't contain the number they're cited for

ozlikethewizard··on Anthropic banned me for "suspicious signals"
If claude was gone why am I still having to read this shite:

"I opened my inbox and there it was: Claude, gone. Not a warning. Not a rate limit. A revocation."

ozlikethewizard··on AI Can Make You Suck Faster Too
Denial of Service is still an issue whether its from an external attack or spaghetti soup code bug. Outcome for your users is the same.

From my perspective it looks like were just allowing hostile developers within our environments now lol.

ozlikethewizard··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Damn now im looking forward to the day when books end up like physical game disks, where somehow you're not buying the book just a license to it, what a boring dystopia this is lol
ozlikethewizard··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
If its a hotspot you'll have to login to authenticate, so presumably the traffic is uniquely identifiable. I'd hope when LE contact ISP for details theyd be able to go oh that ip address is here but it was actually this persons traffic.
ozlikethewizard··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Yea this almosts sounds like it could be a great idea with proper execution, nothing like this in the UK. Imagine if they were upfront and said "well knock a tenner (or whatever is reasonable in the US) if you allow your access point to be used as a hotspot"
ozlikethewizard··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Yea competition only enforces integrity if consumers are selecting for integrity. Without getting into a nitty grityy morality debate, you've got an obvious first issue here that many if not most people dont know what they are buying when it comes to tech, so we cant expect a market to correct for our perceived morality if the consumers havent even got a clue they're being slighted in the first place.
