ozfive··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
They are being made. I have a four node network already in my suburb. There is a software project that is written in Python that essentially turns lorawan nodes into BBSs similar to briar.

This deserves a /s
ozfive··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
Maybe ham repeaters but when we are talking lorawan they will have a hell of a time taking the networks down that are already established. Just in my suburb we have more than 6000 nodes because of the helium network.
ozfive··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
A good use of briar is having it on your phone already so that during a natural disaster you can connect with others that already have it at community relief spots. Keep it just in case and it will come in clutch when you need it most!
ozfive··on Native Amiga Filesystems on macOS / Linux / Windows with FUSE
BeOS fans still exist!
ozfive··on Adobe Photoshop 1.0 Source Code (1990)
Finds the center of a rectangle r Positions a width × height region centered on that rectangle.

Clamps the result so it doesn’t go outside the document.

If the region is bigger than the document, it re-centers instead of snapping to (0,0).

ozfive··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
The layoffs are due to tax incentives in the tax cut bills that financially incentivize offshoring work.
ozfive··on AI tooling must be disclosed for contributions
Yep, it’s not a brand-new problem. I just wonder if AI is going to turbocharge the odds of these disputes popping up.
ozfive··on AI tooling must be disclosed for contributions
What will happen when company A implements algorithm X based on AI output, company B does the same and company A claims that it is proprietary code and takes company B to court?
ozfive··on Nintendo just delayed Switch 2 pre-orders due to Trump tariffs
Pre orders but not launch date. Reasonable considering the circumstances.
ozfive··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
Someone once told me be a cook, a hairdresser, or a repairman.
ozfive··on Learn electricity and electronics fundamentals without taking a formal course
It is exciting! I used to read the Ma-Bell manuals in the science and math library at the University of Oregon.

Edited for emphasis.

ozfive··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
We've heard this for many decades. I'm sure we will be hearing it for decades more...
ozfive··on A Dyson Swarm Made of Solar Panels Would Make Earth Uninhabitable
Why is my brain not getting this right now. 140 K is -270 F so we would go into the negative with a Dyson sphere?
ozfive··on Richard Feynman's blackboard at the time of his death (1988)
Of course, some desires are straightforward. But if every want was just about the thing itself, marketing departments would be out of a job.
ozfive··on Archibald Low's ‘ruthlessly imaginative’ 1925 predictions come true, mostly
The prediction of herbs as street lights is not far off since now scientists are working on glow in the dark trees.

I have a solution to secure Wi-Fi into perpetuity.
ozfive··on India's airline industry in chaos after 90 hoax bomb threats in a week
When I was in Bangalore in 2018 they wouldn't even allow anyone into the entry hall without a boarding pass and passport. Security was more tight back then compared to how you describe it now.

This app doesn't work at all. Signed up, entered a todo item and it errored out.
ozfive··on CMG pitch deck on listening to your conversations to target ads
This wiretapping plain and simple!
ozfive··on HDMI Forum rejects AMD's HDMI 2.1 open-source driver
Single-digit-nanometer-node custom ASICs aren't really required to achieve this. Although there is higher latency this can and has been done on FPGAs at a company I worked for which designed and built custom AVOD systems for private jets and helicopters.
ozfive··on Air Con: $1697 for an on/off switch
There are so many companies that I am sure countless individuals have come along and have solved a problem for themselves that many other customers probably have. These solutions hardly ever surface.

I for one was upset when I bought a HiFi amp from Cambridge Audio (CXA-81) and it came with an IR controller. The only way to be able to control that amp through the app is by means of a DAC which costs another couple of thousand dollars. I refused to accept this as my solution. I wrote a web server that used a Raspberry Pi Zero W and an IR transmitter along with a rudimentary Android app that had a series of buttons which corresponded to the functionalities I needed.

If anyone is interested the web server (written in Go) that the Android app talks to is located here https://github.com/ozfive/CXA81-IR-Remote-Server

I will upload the the Android app source in the next week.

ozfive··on Claude's API now supports CORS requests, enabling client-side applications
Even using the client's keys it would be a good idea to give a disclaimer that their key may be stored (If that is the case) and can be accessible through nefarious means. People are very susceptible to phishing attempts etc. and this sort of business model (where you have the client supply the key and store it through the browser is a slippery slope.
