oxygen··on Ask HN: I really want to start a startup but I don't know what to do.
I was in a 'similar' stage 2 years ago. I grouped with 3 of my friends and started having conversations on a daily basis. All of us came from different background -tech, finance, marketing, research; but had the same start-up itch. We threw ideas on the wall, critiqued them, followed up with some research. Eventually we found our start-up idea which btw has evolved into something completely different in 2 years. So: 1. Form a core group 2. brainstorm, read, research 3. DO IT
oxygen··on Competition is overrated
What about the winner-take-all markets?
oxygen··on Online Shop Till You Drop With Your Friends On Plurchase
In general I am not a big fan of any kind of browser plug-in or frames but plurchase has done it real well. My GF asks for my opinion on a lot of her online purchases (of course what I say really doesn't matter). But this will be a great way to substitute the back-and-forth email chain.
oxygen··on You're our customer. We Hate You
The economics indicate that giving discounts to new customers is more NPV positive than just repricing the whole portfolio. Every portfolio has sleepy customers who don't get maximum value or the maximum perceived value. However, every active and vocal customer should be provided with all benefits. That's the perfect marriage of economics and customers service.
oxygen··on Ask HN: Seeing points again?
I am not sure if the point system changes my behavior or writing style. It definitely impacts my reading style. Let me think of a good experiment to verify.
oxygen··on Ask HN: Review my classroom web tool, Eduset
I would check if teachers think about their job in terms of workload per class or per month and work backwards from there. The real question is: how do I get to $X/teacher?
oxygen··on Ask HN: Review my classroom web tool, Eduset
I like the design and the core concept. My suggestions:

1) The video was helpful and I would out it right under the "Try it for free" tab

2) In terms or pricing strategy, I like the idea of giving away one class for free and then adopt a per class pricing at around $30. I am sure there would be some teachers out there who would just use their one class slot for all classes but then you will always find 10% of your customers getting more than what they paid for. Lets worry about the remaining 90%

3) Make sure you keep track of what school are these teachers from. As soon as you see >5 teachers from a school registering, you might want to solicit an institutional model

4) I, as a teacher-customer, am not sure how will it work for students. What would they see and how? A video will help.
