oxplot··on Elon Musk Owns Twitter; CEO and CFO have left
> The odds are that Twitter will probably be dead in a year.

And that's based on what exactly?

> He'll bring on a few yes-men executives that'll applaud him

Again, based on what?

Now here's a prediction actually based on Musk's past perf:

He'll bring in people who get shit done, and get it done fast. Twitter will achieve things everyone says is stupid, ridiculous and impossible now as he's done in the past 20 years with Tesla and SpaceX.

That will be followed by a large swath of copy-cats who will try to replicate it to no avail.

oxplot··on Tesla Engineers Visit Twitter Office to Review Code for Musk
> This is absolutely ridiculous.

Asking people whose work you trust to evaluate something you can't evaluate yourself is ridiculous now?

EDIT: however, it does leave a bit of a bad taste in Twitter employees mouths, in that it basically indicates that Musk doesn't trust them. Hmm, that's not optimal.

oxplot··on Rust in the Linux Kernel: Just the Beginning
> I'm opposed to this. I want to be able to actually compile my software if I wish so.

So what you're saying is that you're opposed to millions of people having more secure software, and perhaps millions of dollars spared from breaches, because it makes your own occasional singular personal experience of compiling the software faster?

Or did you mean something else?

oxplot··on Tell HN: Getting Ready for Unemployment
I don't know if you've ever noticed that when you're tired, like really tired, doing the most simple tasks feel like moving mountains. They may make you angry, frustrated and annoyed. But you go to bed, wake up the next day and can take on any task. If you think about your current situation as "temporarily being tired", then you know some time later, you'll be feeling better. I use this kind of brain hacks all the time to snap out of spiral thinking. Give it a try.

> I don't know when this war will end and whether they want to nuke the Northern Hemisphere away or not.

I am in a very good place right now and yet I do NOT watch main stream news, regardless of what it is. I have recently started to script away negative content on HN and Twitter as well. So, cut yourself off from news. That alone should lift you up quite a bit.

The world is just fine. It's your fellow human beings who can't pay attention to anything but drama and chaos.

> Trying to do something "useful" in the meantime...

That's the spirit. Also, seek help from pros. Bunch of talking and some drugs can make a world of difference. They are not the cure, but a stepping stone, little push, to help you along the way.

oxplot··on Next steps for Rust in the kernel
For those with better understanding of where zig is at, why not zig for kernel development? Is it merely because it's still in heavy dev?
oxplot··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
Didn't you hear "Twitter" develops on production too, with no staging env.
oxplot··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
Yes, as much as practically possible. For instance, in an online forum, days long delays would be impractical, but maybe 10-20 minutes.
oxplot··on Amazon putting a three-day pause on reviews for Rings of Power
Delaying the effect of human actions seems like a great idea in general. Humans tend to get angry and do/write something they would either regret later or something that hurts others.

Even if the reviews aren't verified, simply confirming with the poster a few days later whether they want to make changes before making it public may reduce the number of rash remarks.

oxplot··on Samsung Loses a Ton of User Data – Offers Nothing to Victims
> Samsung did not 'lose' anything.

Well there is DLP: "Data Loss Prevention is the practice of detecting and preventing data breaches, exfiltration, or unwanted destruction of sensitive data."

oxplot··on Fix it, Fork it, Fuck off (2019)
Disclaimer: I write open source software and I use open source software.

It's a non-useful and self-damaging trait that most people seem to have: yell at others to try to make them behave in a certain way where they can instead take actions on their own to ignore/avoid those behaviors.

This shows up all the time at work where people complain that they are getting too many slack messages or emails. You are not some hopeless caveman who has no idea what a computer is. Set up a filter and send everything you don't like to trash. Silence your notification. Mute/leave channels. Oh right, you are also a software developer. Write code to automate the above.

> There is no need to abuse the maintainer, repeatedly post the bug, harass them over twitter.

Block the user on GH/Twitter! Lock the conversation. Write a script to do the blocking for you automatically (Twitter and Github both have APIs for that - that should be a hint that this is an intended use case!).

If you have already identified someone as an abuser, any response, negative, positive, dismissive or otherwise, is only going to encourage the behavior - that is a well studied pattern. Writing a post and having it end up on HN does the exact opposite of what you hope it would. Someone reading your post is going to specifically go out of his/her way to fuck with you.

Instead, just ignore.

oxplot··on A spelled-out intro to neural networks and backpropagation [video]
Wow — this was in fact the most easy to understand and yet from-first-principles intro to NN that I've seen. Glad Andrej is focusing on ML education.
oxplot··on RavynOS – Finesse of macOS, freedom of FreeBSD
Hmm, looking at the screenshots and comparing with my current Gnome on Wayland, the latter is way more beautiful and with better utility.
oxplot··on I Stopped Reading Hacker News Comments
> Do you think it is humanly possible to always check for any new comment? How would you even locate them (HN does not tell you which comments are new)?

That's why I use a HTML->RSS script on my profile comment page and get standard RSS feed of new replies sent to my email! Easy peasy.

oxplot··on Framework Laptop (2022) review: the repairability dream
What doesn't get mentioned is the amazing support provided by the Framework team. From their community board [1] to their customer support, these folks love their customers. From the CEO (Nirav), to their system engineer (Kieran) and all in-between, drop in to answer questions and help solve issues. The community forum is akin to Arch Wiki. You find some gems of replies to technical issues that are unparalleled across the net.

Best laptop support experience ever. Best laptop ever. Verge, "Generic looking" as a con? AYFKM?

oxplot··on Starlink Maritime
> That requires intersat communications which the RV plan doesn't provide.

Intersat (laser links) comms is not available at the moment. Fairly sure they simply geofence non-maritime accounts. As you can see from the maritime map, it only covers water next to the shore which is a good indicator that they still use ground stations directly to provide service.

EDIT: looks like it's not geofenced based on some other people's comments who've been using the standard terminal on boats.

oxplot··on Starlink Maritime
You can easily use an inverter to go from 12v to 110V/240V and just use the stock adapter. Alternatively, you can get your hands dirty and do what I did [1]. However, I'm fairly certain that the non-maritime accounts won't be able to use the service on water (most likely geofenced) so that Starlink can sell their maritime version.

oxplot··on 40% of Google users now connect via IPv6
> there is no reason to not support ipv6 out of the box in 2022

Use the age of a service as the metric, not the absolute year we're in. It's probably reasonable to say that there is little reason not to support IPv6 for an ISP with X years of operation. Starlink is young still.

An analogy is worldwide sales for a new laptop company. You can say that in the age of globalism, there is no reason not to ship to every continent right off the bat. But for a startup with limited cash that has lot of building blocks to lay out, it's a huge risk. They should plan for it, but only branch out when they've got a solid foundation.

oxplot··on 40% of Google users now connect via IPv6
It's not a function of overlap. If they've determined IPv6 isn't a priority and instead a risk, then it makes no sense to dedicate resources to it right now. It's not as if everything else about the firmware/software is wrapped up and the software team is sitting on their hands doing nothing.
oxplot··on 40% of Google users now connect via IPv6
That's what CGNAT provides a temporary solution for.
oxplot··on Code replay attack on the myGovID Scheme
Am I missing something or is this just a run-of-the-mill phishing attack? If it is, then every website under the sun that doesn't use a FIDO or WebAuthn is susceptible to it. How is this any different?

In fact, Google has a very similar 2FA option where you can simply press a Yes/No on a mobile device you are already signed into, in order to authenticate another device. None of the this PIN stuff is going to do much to reduce the odds of phishing.
