oxff··on Tell HN: Food is too expensive now
The answers to your question would either lead to being downvoted into oblivion or shadowbanned here, lol
oxff··on Ask HN: Should a professional software dev know how many bits go in a byte?
If you can't do napkin math with bits and bytes to calculate capacities, bandwidths, flows etc. you are lacking one of the most essential skills there are, and need to pick up the slack ASAP.
oxff··on Prettier for Rust
Why would I use this and not the established `cargo fmt`
oxff··on Ask HN: Is it a career negative to join Meta now
Really? Were you rejected from interviews because you had FB on your resume?
oxff··on Ask HN: Going All-In on Rust
Work. You want to check you can be employed with it if you go all-in.
oxff··on Ask HN: What's your note-taking methodology?
VSCode + markdown files which are linked (Foam).

Zotero for stuff collected from browser.

oxff··on After Obsidian and Logseq, I give Dendron a try
logseq feels such an anti-intuitive mess to use, haha. struggling to even get the cards work.
oxff··on After Obsidian and Logseq, I give Dendron a try
These programs will not help you organize your thoughts; they work if you have already organized them. Some seem to think the causation goes otherwise.
oxff··on Ask HN: What habits apps do you use? Why do you like those apps?
I refuse to gamify and disassociate myself from my own body as such by turning it into a metrics tracker, I use none. Seems inhuman.
oxff··on Security policy audits: Why and How
> Information security isn't just about software and hardware -- it's at least as much about policies and processes.

I recently came across these, which really helped me to understand the basics:

It was an informative read for someone who had paid little attention to this stuff.

oxff··on CircleCI Announces Support for Gitlab
I was kind of against this, until I realized the reason I even began programming was purely out of social need (to make a program for me and my friend). I don't really mind it anymore.
oxff··on CircleCI Announces Support for Gitlab
> Stifle competition by offering free services that their non-MS-owned competitors can't afford to offer.

This is quite absurd complaint, is it not?

oxff··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Why is it so hard to have a site where I can share pictures with and for friends and see them in chronological order
oxff··on Ask HN: Do You Trust Grammarly?
It is very obviously some intelligence agency op.
oxff··on Zettelkasten 101 Series: What Is a Fleeting Note?
People dont understand that the whole graph-first note taking is not even ZK.
oxff··on Ask HN: Why do you make class members private?
"With a sufficient number of users of an API,

it does not matter what you promise in the contract:

all observable behaviors of your system

will be depended on by somebody."

oxff··on Ask HN: What are the best programming tricks you know?
Not strictly a programming trick, but when something breaks I do this mentally:

1. Don't change anything.

2. Ask myself what do I know.

3. Ask myself why do I think I know (2).

4. Ask myself what to do next.

The step 3 is really the big one.

oxff··on Ask HN: What are the best programming tricks you know?
Writing functions that return side effects as a message instead of running them within the function must be one of the most underrated things.
oxff··on What’s the end goal for you programmers?
Regular people will not retire anymore is my guess.
oxff··on What’s the end goal for you programmers?
People generally work now so that they don't have to work later.
oxff··on Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS crash course series
Using these tools in personal projects is how you learn them though, so you can talk about your experience, and maybe even show some prototype in an interview / CV etc.
oxff··on Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS crash course series
All these "you don't need X / Y / Z" points critically miss the point that it's irrelevant when that is what the companies hiring people want anyway.
oxff··on Ask HN: Why are self-taught developers deprived of “free for education” tools?
> free for education really is a marketing tool to get the students to use and depend the product so they when they land a job they can convince their Product Manager to pay for it

lol (i was extremely guilty to this)

oxff··on Embed is in C23
People who call C simple have some weird definition of simple. How many C programs contain UB or are pure UB? Probably over 95%+. Language's not simple at all.
oxff··on We're going to need a lot of solar panels
Just use nuclear power.
oxff··on “Starting Up Security”
A collection of information security essays and links to help growing teams manage risks. I found these helpful.
oxff··on I regret my website redesign
The agency was a JS abusing their client so idk why you would just lash out at new great technologies when they weren't part of this.
oxff··on About using Nix in my development workflow
> nix is a system you have to actually use to begin to understand and synthesize

Then it is fairly bad as a tool, you don't wan't to spend disproportionate amount of time learning to use the tool when the goal is to just use the tool and forget about it (ie. using Nix for more deterministic builds).

oxff··on About using Nix in my development workflow
Nix documentation is such a clusterfuck. You have to basically forage some kind of "most up2date understanding" of basic best practices from random ass blogposts / digging into other people's configs. This is a major red flag.
oxff··on Ask HN: Which book/subject you wish you had early on in your programming career?
https://www.tedinski.com/archive/

healthy criticism of common software engineering practices, with very helpful practical ideas to use in your own design / engineering.
