oxff··on Android 13 requires devices to have more than 2GB RAM and 16GB storage
> Android seems to be growing inferior to iOS in almost every way

Crazy statement. I have iPhone for work and it is horrible to use. I haven't met a single thing from UX point of view in iOS that is better than whatever is in Android. It's a complete downgrade IME.

oxff··on Ask HN: What happened to vanilla HTML/CSS/JS development?
You don't get hired for, say, a role that requires Svelte / React expertise by pointing out "I did it in vanilla JS!" - so you are correct, industry sets the rules and your CV if you want a job from them, needs to reflect this.

There are also software engineering (not programming) reasons, mostly because they set standards for stuff like state management, for why they're useful - helps with future maintenance, documentation etc. when you don't have to interpret a custom self-made framework and teach it to hires.

oxff··on Ask HN: What happened to vanilla HTML/CSS/JS development?
I'd say 80% marketing and "monkey see, monkey do" effect.
oxff··on Ask HN: How do you deploy your weekend project in 2022?
flyio since Heroku had the little accident, works for me
oxff··on Ask HN: What happened to theregister.com?
It is like reading articles made by language model.
oxff··on Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic?
U relax the Malthusian selection, u get side effects, simple as.
oxff··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
This thread is a real horror story.
oxff··on Ask HN: Best and Worst API Documentations?
Best: Github, MDN, Rust standard lib docs, Stripe.

Worst: anything MS (excl. Github obv).

oxff··on Half of Japan's LDP lawmakers had ties with Unification Church
Someone over at Twitter called it the most successful robloxing in a while for this exact reason.
oxff··on I tracked everything I read on the internet for a year
The articles I've read are recorded by the fact that they contain a note in the Zotero catalog. Articles I want to read are implicitly recorded by the fact that they're in the catalog without a note attached to them. In Zotero when I use its notes functionality I mostly copy-paste quotes from the source material as a highlight reel for myself.

Here's a picture to show: https://i.imgur.com/HvIxdI0.png, everything with '1' under the first column is "read" or at least skimmed, and everything without it is unread but waiting to be read.

Diary contains more of my own thoughts about the material if they arise, and other stream-of-conscious stuff. For organizing my diary I use just tags and timestamp as a filename.

The main thing I'd say is that you have to kind of test and fiddle around with this stuff, once you find something with next to 0 overhead (like my flow is for me) it becomes quite rewarding in how it helps you gather and retain information. I could never get into the whole Roampilled hyperdimensional graph productivity BassBoost thing myself.

oxff··on I tracked everything I read on the internet for a year
Zotero simplified a lot of my note taking / "information retaining" from stuff I bookmark / read. Much better than Obsidian etc.

> Add thing to Zotero, 99% of the time the metadata comes with it and is searchable already.

> To mark it as read, make a note for it (usually consists of main idea, good / bad ideas in the article, few sentences).

> Zotero entries without note are assumed unread.

for my diary / misc notes I use vscode with some markdown plugins, foam has like daily note functionality which is nice, add a new diary entry and add some tags ezpz

oxff··on What to read to understand central banking
I wouldn't start with Economist nor theorycel material in general. The fastest I got to understand Fed was to read about their operations, observe market reactions to them and read their own research. Easy strike against starting with ad-hoc theory material is that they tend to misinterpret 2008 QE.
oxff··on Ask HN: Work Culture Canary?
Why is this a red flag / canary? Given the chance, I'd take every single non-monetary benefit (such as "health benefit", or "exercise benefit") as direct monetary compensation added to my pay, by virtue of the fact I know much better how to allocate that money such that it is beneficial to me.
oxff··on How the SQLite virtual machine works
For some reason, IME, SQLite feels the hardest to use of the popular databases. I did start my own database journey with Postgre and MSSQL so I feel kind of lost with SQLite whenever I use it.
oxff··on What the interns have wrought, 2022 edition
They have the only podcast worth a shit too.
oxff··on Why has software supply chain security exploded?
There is more money to be earned in exploiting the supply chain.
oxff··on Ask HN: Work Culture Canary?
How they treat office work (first or second class)
oxff··on Ask HN: Where are you getting your information from?
From anonymous cranks in Twitter and 4chan, they seem to have a very high batting average compared to credentialed people these days.
oxff··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
I mean guys, it supposedly started next to a lab that studies the virus and they've yet to find the original bat population spreading it. If I made a Contagion 2 film that asked you to suspend your disbelief wrt. these two facts you wouldn't buy it.
oxff··on Ask HN: Do you use foreign keys in relational databases?
How is this even a question, besides denormalization cases, FKs are essential for data integrity and management if you have even slightly relational data (data that is composed of joining tables), it guarantees you a source of truth..
oxff··on Ask HN: Location based pay is killing my motivation, how do others handle it?
pay in EU is absolute vomit comapred to US, we are v. poor compared to yanks
oxff··on Ask HN: What book have you re-read 3x or more?
Blood Meridian.
oxff··on Ask HN: Should I continue to binge reading CS books from secondary sources?
PRIMARY SOURCES are important because computer science, programming and software engineering are not abstractions that exist outside of history, outside of their practitioners. There is a lot of PATH DEPENDENCY and TECH DEBT that simply exists and which guides theory and practice, and we cannot wish it away by pointing to an objectively superior technical solution.

HISTORY helps to explain why this came to be and often these primary sources serve as historical records and they make the future (our present) make sense since, as a purely TECHNICAL SOLUTION, some things or developments do not make sense.

This has become fairly evident to me when reading about data management and databases the past month, the original papers starting from 70s up to today.

oxff··on CMU 15-799: Self-Driving Database Management Systems
Very interesting and instructive course from Pavlo / CMU on self-driving (ML optimized) database systems.

A motivational essay attached to lecture 1: "On Machine Learning Agents for Autonomous Database Management Systems"

oxff··on Mastodon still can’t replace Twitter
On a technical level it is easy to make a product that is better than Twitter: replicate it exactly but fix the complaints.

The reason it is not getting actually replaced by another product is very simple: they can't move the community of Twitter there. Largest public place to go and make your political enemies seethe and cope in 280 characters or less.

oxff··on We want to make Nix better
Make the documentation up to the modern standards. If I have to open a single random blog or Github repository to find out what to do and piece it together like a puzzle - it is impossible to adapt at organizational scale.

It is also complex enough to require a modern Language Server.

oxff··on SQLite: Past, Present, and Future
I read papers most of the time on phone and these two column papers are such a PITA to read lol
oxff··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email
"after @ there are no dashes of any kind"
oxff··on How to Improve Indoor Air Quality
How the f. article titled like that has 0 mentions for plants
oxff··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
Does Mac have anything like WSL or are you stuck using Virtualbox or Docker?
