overu589··on The Psychology of Phishing: Why Smart People Fall for Scams
Brevity, only a few lines back and forth, simply didn’t acknowledge my chatty inquiries. He’s an old timer, who seasonally habituates a Latin American remote location. I tried calling a number I had, though didn’t get ahold of him until after things unfolded. He said he got a lot of messages from old friends!
overu589··on The Psychology of Phishing: Why Smart People Fall for Scams
Oooh, I got hit by one. I got a random email from a long time back community level friend/acquaintance. An old timer who seasonally migrates to a popular south of the border retreat.

Over a back and fourth of vaguely brief emails asking if I could do a favor. He doesn’t have a working credit card and his cash is not useful getting a digital gift for a friend.

A hard luck friend (the dying kind) is having a birthday and asks if I could order a gift card of a generous amount (to cover part of something else she has always wanted.)

You know who the sucker is. Casually generous and asking little of others. I did reclaim my losses due to the fraud (consumertopia ain’t all bad) and learned a valuable lesson. These fraudsters hacked my friend’s gmail account and knew whatever that provides.

overu589··on Ask HN: How to thrive as a self-taught developer?
“Own time”? I guess I think of it all as my own time, even when I’m cashing out on bits and blocks here and there.

One’s whole life should be a personal project no matter how you spend it! And the whole world is your teacher, you have to be the self learner.

overu589··on Ask HN: How to thrive as a self-taught developer?
I have always thought it was the only way to thrive.

All of this processing you have to do internally. You can and should learn from others yet the work has to be done on the inside. Stop oversharing.

Your reliability is your only commodity. Someone somewhere will give you an opportunity, something will come along, being competent and prepared at that time is the winning strategy.

Don’t be a pain in the ass. Be like a monk with your own problems and inconveniences and others will grow to admire your composure and cool under pressure.

Don’t wait for good luck, continuously train to be that useful badass!

overu589··on Ask HN: Best self-hosted wiki for local communities?
I really like tiddlywiki, especially since you can take offline self contained snapshots, and it is sooo customizable you can become “converted” to its way of doing things.

There has long since been server versions, and recently they released a new and improved service version which takes aim at your needs.

> works for some projects and not for others

Precisely why independents exist.

All of that other stuff is your distraction. You can have a mixed strategy. You can tune and innovate over time. Think things through and find what meets opportunity. Clients want work done with out the pain in the ass. Being direct and easy to deal with is “why me” in the first place.

You can invoice in blocks and pre bill ~25% as a retainer of necessary. You work through blocks of hours or features and send “pay the amount of” invoices every week (or as agreed) subtotaled from the projected original.

The first (or routine) invoice is just their professional promise to pay you as agreed if you do the work. Periodic or batch “pay amount of” invoices notch away at these. Keeps everything clear and hassle free.

Yes, and if there are unexpected issues driving up the unproductive yet necessary time, eat the hours.

Integrity and foresight are the “premium.”

> Darkness isn't a force, after all: it's just the absence of light.

Are you sure? From a perspective it appears darkness is drinking away the light to light’s last embers.

overu589··on The psychonaut field manual [pdf]
Dark is devouring the light.

The spiritual communities are going bonkers about lizard people and other occult (and worse), not because that is actually true rather a psyop spiritual battle is boggling minds from within.

The immoral and corrupt know they can trust (and will “pay”) each other. The moral will be ridiculed or prescribed antipsychotics for their troubles.

You say otherwise because that was the old teaching, that is what you want to believe, and no one has made trouble for you otherwise.

The light and love is precious, it must be nurtured and maintained, protected. The modern mind (comfortable, convenient, and convinced it’s all a state of mind) just doesn’t have the tenacity of will to endure the mounting struggles. Not at scale anyhow.

overu589··on Does anyone else wonder about this?
All the time!

Existence exists and life (consciousness) exists to experience it.

Relationships.

That’s way “it’s all about.”

Relationships create more probability in the Universe, rather than everything merely winding down. More than an expanding cloud of fire and cinder anyhow.

Your relationship with yourself, your environment, others, and your works is more universe than without.

overu589··on The psychonaut field manual [pdf]
Yes, most of what is experienced is curated. Large parts of our minds evolved to suppress and filter raw perception, that it does not drive us mad and we can think with clear purpose upon consciously important issues (whatever they may be.)

The first years would be spent quieting the mind, though the real work is rigorous and exhausting.

Aside from the immense crevasse which cuts one off from even perceiving the many subtle distinctions, those experientially adept may merely manipulate your perception. In fact, without an uplift curating your experience you could not in a thousand years stumble upon Power yourself.

Other than the immense difficulty, it really is kind of tame. The wormholes are in our heads. Some are masters in creating their own hyperdimensional space (which the flat lander may have trouble comprehending.) this may be every bit as amazing as generative AI creating an HD interactive experience, or a fuzzy blob in the back of the mind which leaves you with a forever haunting impression.

Anything substantive will be trivialized or made taboo (called “insane” ending all argument.)

And dark designs do thrive in the shadow of humanity’s incredulity.

“Yes Virginia, magic does exist in the world; like all things beautiful, dark minds covet and it is the innocent who pay.”

overu589··on The psychonaut field manual [pdf]
It works quite well, only it takes decades to develop a technology that runs on human minds (rather than silicon.) It takes decades to develop with another “uplifting” you, which you don’t have on account of it being a controlled and coveted field. Those who certainly do run the world through these means are subtle. “Indistinguishable from bullshit or an act of God” subtle. Besides, what can’t you explain away by chance or psychosis?

Minds may be networked, the occult society which moderates this is lawless, immoral, and can hear every thought (and memory) in your head.

This PDF is a funsy lay guide. Psychonaught is how I got started. Power is not so innocent.

overu589··on Anyone here successfully working part-time in tech?
Don’t call it “part time”, become an independent contractor, focus on a niche, and only bill how ever many hours you like. I have spent long periods of time only billing ~3 hours per day. Great for life/work balance. Btw, the more you bill the more your time will be valued. Don’t make a concession, mark yourself up as premium.
overu589··on Is it true that up to half of people have no inner monologue? I investigated
Some people literally have an incessant prattling which narrates pretty much everything they think about. Some couldn’t type this sentence without every word repeated to themselves.

And others are as you describe. And still yet others, something else (like psycho-emotional playback and thought image chain reactions.)

overu589··on Tiny home on a bicycle provides shelter for the chronic homeless
I volunteer in kitchens and give direct. I befriend my locals and help them pay for their medicine if they ask (unbelievably, the homeless at times still have to cover their prescription costs.)

I don’t prescribe the alienation and hostility I see my fellow jackass American exhibit. You see them as “them” or “those”. You’re (karma critic) the “them” or “those”, these are a collective of individuals bound only by your dissociative contempt.

overu589··on Tiny home on a bicycle provides shelter for the chronic homeless
I blame that populous who requires a centralized authority to do things for them.
overu589··on Ask HN: What did "computer geek" type people do before computers were invented?
Well, hackers made furniture with hatchets apparently.
overu589··on Tiny home on a bicycle provides shelter for the chronic homeless
It’s worth a try, one bicycle home at a time.

Upon the heap of many issues involved in “homelessness” is wedged the modern lie that conventional housing and lifestyle is natural or working for us all. In addition to drugs and psychosis and devastating circumstance of impoverishment, there are also those who cannot escape living as a part of the open streets of the world.

overu589··on Elon Musk's alleged burner account 'Adrian Dittman' exposed
Lolz
overu589··on Ask HN: Why do so many software developers fail the FizzBuzz test?
I used a variation of rot13, discovering much the same thing.

I try to put myself in the other’s perspective. Firstly, many (myself included) do not respond predictably on “on the spot”. Going cold into a problem is like doing some responsive physical activity, it often takes some mental warm up. The obstruction of “mental tooling” makes a unit of effort in the span of two hours, two weeks, or two month frames.

Solving the problem in “pseudo code”, in which you don’t actually intend to run it for instance reduces the anxiety of the dev environment not working in exactly the way you require for your iterative dev round trip. Even if it isn’t actually a problem, our mindsets are actually slower switching intellectual frames, where those frames may be compartmentalized competence.

Is that compartmentalized competence in there, and can I get it out? Is it wrapped in a tolerable character? So many dimensions set us apart.

overu589··on What Priority the Innocent?
Every priority is for the innocent.

These thought experiments are out of touch.

The whole point of law is to protect the innocent.

Punishing the innocent is a crime.

overu589··on A Robust Definition for Human-Level AGI
What every humanly possible benchmark?

Put it in a sleeve (body) and have it function coherently and self responsibly, that is one even further. Have this first survive.

We haven’t figured ourselves out in important ways, we haven’t passed all of our own tests.

overu589··on Living ceramics utilize bacteria for gas sensing and carbon capture
The idea of developing symbiotic living systems is more appealing than the very modern “what can I monetize by this” topic angle. Sure, sensors are cool. Living technologies, even cooler!
overu589··on Scientists observe "negative time" in quantum experiments
I think this is not what they describe it as.

I believe this is like Tesla’s water valve or any kind of constructive and destructive back propagation.

It isn’t “negative time” it is the slit experiment only the wall or slits are the target refraction back propagated.

overu589··on Arizona School's Curriculum Will Be Taught by AI, No Teachers
I would like to see one taught by the last printed copy of the encyclopedia Britannica (not the AI version), and see who comes out on top.
overu589··on Ask HN: How old is your oldest password?
For your question, I remember my first password from when I was ~13 and use it in jokey places, though my longest running password was twenty years, and that’s exclusively for local devices.

On the general topic, I’m a touch typist and terrible at remembering things though I discovered I could learn to reflexively type passwords I did not intellectually “know”.

These days I keep a password tab in my ever on person pocket journal (my persons is security ground zero) of ~18 character highly random strings which I rotate continuously. I find it takes me a couple of weeks to be able to use these passwords without looking (or “knowing” what they are.)

I use one for personal system login, and one for my local only password manager (no lost pass.) All else uniquely keyed within!

overu589··on The Paradox of the Internet
Some of that is insightful, though I find the conclusion your own deception. The infrastructure of democracy was designed and configured by the capable. Living systems being generational, we have progressed now beyond centuries upon this platform. What exhibits today, under scrutiny, is that (firstly) those passing contemporary standards of education are not psycho-emotionally superior (as opposed to those taking it very seriously.) Also, today’s implementation is abstracted so far that sillystring and lies keep it all held together. “Too big to fail, it lumbers on at the expense of the lives of others.”

I do not blame the meager political selection, I blame the apatite and base lack of integrity among Americans. The apathy and conceit that they can live a life of distracted nonsense and then “decide” based on their thoughts feelings and beliefs when the time comes. It is complicated, demand more!

I wouldn’t wish notoriety upon anyone I care for btw, few can be as cruel and devastating as the apatite of that mob, whoever is ruling them. I know everyone thinks their neighbors are nice these days, yet there remains submerged ill wills among us.

The curriculum should certainly contain chapters of the corruptibility if not incompetence of ordinary persons.

overu589··on Citizenship Is Becoming More of a Privilege Than a Right
I agree with the flagged and dead comment by @anovikov.

Everyone has human rights no matter where they are or are from. Everyone living in accordance with local laws have the protections and freedoms as all persons. Citizenship however? The right to vote! The right to decide! The right to impose one’s cloistered views upon others? May this right be given by some rudimentary process of merit, such as civic service or application (demonstrating competent working knowledge of democracy and governance.)

Everyone has the right to their own hide, who can truly be said to have a stake in the civic order who has not served or worked to comprehend that order?

Note: This is a critique of default citizenship not the linked article specifically.

overu589··on Ask HN: Would Anyone Pay to Go After Phishers and Scammers?
Sounds necessary, even on some level of community vigilance.

Simply doxxing the offending parties and their operations for a level playing field seems praiseworthy.

Good luck with that!

overu589··on The Paradox of the Internet
I’m finding so called “democracy” disappointing. Maybe we should reevaluate that certain domains should have an order and topology required by its purpose.

For instance, democracy has no place in formalized education. The student is the commodity and entered (and may exit) their arrangement of their own well informed consensual free will.

Beyond this, vigorous debate is nice. Democracy may be as base as appeal to mob appetite. Besides, aren’t democracies themselves contingent upon prosperity, peace, and well disseminated information (or something)? Which are we?
