outime··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
I find it funny that if I were to read your comment outside of this website, I could most likely identify it as a HN comment because it mentions barely-used sites popular in HN (such as Bluesky, Signal, Jitsi, IRC, etc), but skips mentioning actually popular ones everywhere else (like Snapchat, Facebook/Messenger, Instagram, TikTok, etc).
outime··on Pilot study shows ketogenic diet improves mental illness
>I think we're just starting to understand the link between diet and mental state

"All disease begins in the gut" – Hippocrates (460 – c. 370 BC)

outime··on Apache Guacamole: a clientless remote desktop gateway
Several years back, I developed an education platform using Apache Guacamole for a startup. Its robust functionality and high level of customization made it an exceptional choice. I can only imagine how much more powerful it has become since then. Kudos to the devs for their invaluable contribution to the OSS community.
outime··on Ibis, a federated Wikipedia alternative
I believe that if I have a new project and I want people to read about it and get interested, I must support mobile browsers (which nowadays produce more than half of the global website traffic) - more so if not doing it like in my example means not being able to read a single line at all.

It's just basic accessibility what we're talking about here.

outime··on Ibis, a federated Wikipedia alternative
Cannot take a project like this seriously in 2024 while looking like total garbage [1] on mobile.

outime··on Simplicity of IRC (2022)
I started writing bots and scripts in mIRC Scripting at around the same age, perhaps even a bit earlier. Back then, there were full-fledged bots (as in Nickserv, Chanserv, etc) for servers like UnrealIRCD that were entirely written in mIRC. I fondly remember those times as they were filled with lots of fun and opportunities to meet interesting people every day.
outime··on The largest climatized reading space
Oodi in Helsinki is a quite interesting concept, although not the best if you want to be in complete silence.
outime··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Not in Finland for example.
outime··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Same in Spain since 2004 Madrid train bombings IIRC.
outime··on Sora: Creating video from text
How many 14 years old do you know who collect vinyl?
outime··on The appendix is not, in fact, useless
For what it's worth, I can relate to your story very much, albeit with a slight twist. The last time I experienced such intense pain, I ended up fainting (first and only instance in my life) in the ER. Consequently, surgery became a must.

IMHO, considering your past experiences with similar symptoms and existing scarring, it seems advisable to forgo the appendix, especially given your susceptibility to infection. If you hadn't done it, perhaps one of the future occasions could have ended much worse.

outime··on Ask HN: What happened to normal-sized smartphones?
Brace yourselves for the monthly brain teaser on Hacker News, where the average user struggles to comprehend why corporations axe a type of product with the smallest market share.
outime··on GM says it's dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto because they're unsafe
>There's no obligation to buy a new one

Maybe at your location. For example in Spain, many people will just not be able to drive in many places in 2024 if they don't qualify to have a good-enough "environmental distinctive" which is a label you put in your car that shows how much your car pollutes. No label or too bad of a label? You can't drive in many places.

Note: In reality it's bs as many other regulations since e.g. any ECO-labelled car (2nd best distinctive) can be a 600 CV Ferrari with a tiny electric engine.

outime··on The feds' vehicle 'kill switch' mandate is a gross violation of privacy
>I think these should be installed in cars in such a way that they can be removed by owners. And then make removing it a crime.

>In the foreign invasion (or US govt goes full fascist) case, people can remove these devices.

I don't follow this logic. Would it stop being a crime then? If anything, it'd start being more severely punished.

outime··on The feds' vehicle 'kill switch' mandate is a gross violation of privacy
>The fact that some people here even debates that shows how much we are screwed.

It's really sad to see that even after centuries of countless examples about how the authorities of the time will end up abusing any power that's granted to them there's still people (even a majority of people) who think it'll be different this time as opposed to our whole known human history. We surely are doomed to repeat the same mistakes again and again and again.

outime··on The importance of cash in a technological society
But in reality you’ll be paying anyway, just not right away. You need to pay someone to handle the cash (assuming you’re not a tiny shop), potential theft or losing it, human errors when handling it, etc

outime··on YouTube wants to get you watching more news from 'authoritative sources'
WHO being wrong about many things isn't a bug.
outime··on YouTube wants to get you watching more news from 'authoritative sources'
It might be that's what they're trying to solve https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37929373 - I checked and it may be the case: https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/digital-news-repo...
outime··on YouTube wants to get you watching more news from 'authoritative sources'
So YouTube becoming the ol' good TV full of ads and propaganda? You won't believe what happens next.
outime··on K3s – Lightweight Kubernetes
I'm tired of seeing comments with an apparent layer of objectivity which very quickly goes away as you reason about it for a second. You could've just said "I don't like K8s, it's too complex for my taste" but then your comment would be gray for being short and concise, so you decide to say this.

Opinions are fine and you may as well hate K8s or any tech being discussed. I just hope to see less of "people who like this just because they don't know any better vs the smart ones like me who know The Truth™" comments.

outime··on Unity's oldest community announces dissolution
Most if not all governments also play this card. Fictional example: "we'll raise the tax to 10%" sh-t hits the fan as expected "after careful considerations we'll "only" raise it to 8%" everyone is cheerful thinking they made decision-makers change their mind. A similar version: when they promise to do something knowing it's impossible to achieve, then sell it as "they don't let us do it but trust us we'd have done it otherwise". All in all, the shocking thing is how effective this is despite having been in practice for (probably) centuries and centuries.
outime··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
IANAL nor close to it but is there any legal requirement in the US to keep logs avoid user activity besides access logs? I'd be surprised that the US federal law forces you to keep a full activity log so that they can take a look later for some reason.
outime··on As I get older, I just don't care about new technology
It's down to cost benefit. If life has taught me anything is to never be an early adopter, unless you absolutely have to. It applies to many things but specially in tech: never buy the first version of a device (in fact, you'd be spending more money for a worse experience), never use the .0 major version of something important enough, never use the beta version of something unless you must do (e.g. you're a dev and you're preparing your apps for the next version), never learn a language or framework that just came out because there's 100% guarantee things will change a lot and it may as well die within a year, etc. However, I do learn new stuff all the time but they're things that have been somewhat established and solve problems I have.

There's also the thing that one may be depressed for one reason or another and then feels like doing nothing new anymore and just want to play with the known - which is a quite natural reaction, but shouldn't be confused with getting old.

outime··on Alpine Linux does not make the news
There are other things to consider, specially data transfer and build times (apk is much faster than apt in my experience). If these and other benefits are worth the trouble of musl is up to each individual.
outime··on Go 1.21 will (probably) download newer toolchains on demand by default
This was a really elegant way to decline having a pointless discussion, I like it.
outime··on Brains on Drugs: How tinkering with consciousness became a societal sin
The way your comment puts it, it seems like people who cannot experiment happiness nor enjoy 'little things' just need to suck it up and just experience them naturally like you do.

Now in a more serious way: everybody is different and many people tend to describe their life experiences as if they were universal. Turns out out perceptions are vastly different and therefore it’s up to the (informed) person to take over their life and do what’s necessary to not be miserable.

outime··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
I mean if a group of people is constantly "predicting" that X will go down then some day indeed they'll be correct.

I'm not saying things don't change because it'd be dumb to believe that given known human history. However I just despise the fact that even here in HN, any event happening in corporate that's otherwise minor outside of these doors is confidently defined as the tipping point ("fastest suicide" is maybe one of the most dramatic ways) and the company will go bust. Just wanted to clarify that, I agree with your sentiment.

outime··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
I don't think Reddit will die because of this nor I think this is the first time HN gets sensitive against a corporation's actions. It's happened several times in the past. The most recent I remember is the beef with Meta and WhatsApp, where a good chunk of HN was very sure everybody would move over to Signal and WhatsApp would be left to rot. Similar thing happened with Twitter and Mastodon. People get very emotional and cannot see through the fog.

It's just the same cycle over and over. As time has demonstrated dozens of times, HN isn't good at forecasting nor is representative at all of most end-users. The great majority of Reddit users (and this doesn't include me) use the official app or the official website and therefore besides this very short protest which will end soon as like many other protests in the past for different reasons, Reddit will just continue to be as popular.

outime··on Ask HN: What's the best self hosted/local alternative to GPT-4?
I'm all for promoting own solutions if it fits the context but OP is asking for self-hosted alternatives and this is not. This fits the definition of spam.
